I'm not sure how other states treat their micro brews, but Vermonters are very passionate about our brews. My favorite beer right now is Long Trail Double Bag. It's very dark, and fairly high in it's alcohol content. Stone Brewery is good stuff too, but that's from California I think.

I've wondered about brewing my own stuff, but I'm still a bit early on the scene. I don't really know enough about beer yet. I could go for a double chocolate stout right now, thought. I've always wanted to try milk stout too. At least I scratched smoked porter off the list.
You'll find that most north-east states are passionate about their micros. It's very similar, if not more militant, in Colorado.

As for a DCS, I'd recommend Young's DCS. It's unfathomable how delicious it is.Find a 500ml bottle though, the 12 oz ones and the canned ones aren't nearly as good.

If you want to learn more about how beer is made, read this:

The crowd that recommended Samurai to me fall more into the wine and cheese crowd, so they probably don't know their beer all that much. And my more regular friends are still caught up in the overpriced cognac stage it would seem. So I tend to stick to my bourbon, rye if I'm feeling a bit pretentious.
Delving into the world of craft beer isn't a simple task there is going to be alot you don't like at first. I suggest matching it with food to compliment and improve the taste. Try something simple that you can get you hands on quite easily say Sierra Nevada Pale, and match it with a mild spice like Louisiana Chicken. Or even a mild spice asian dish, you'll find that both the flavours improve and beer becomes more of an option.

Feel free to post whatever you enjoy, though.
Magic Hat. They are a brewery up in Vermont, and they make some wicked pale ales. #9 is their signature brew, but that have many other good ones, such as sitting chair, and circus boy.

You should totally check them out.

Anything from the New Glarus Brewing Co. Spotted cow is deliciouuuuuusssss.
You a fellow Wisconsinite? Spotted Cow is a good local tap, 1 dollar pints at most bars around here during happy hour.

I like Guinness, as lame as that is to say, nothing compares in taste to me. If I have to go with a cheaper, but still decent beer that I can find anywhere, I go with Michelob Amber Bock.

As far as brewing myself, I have never dared, however if someone here were to give some advice I might just have the balls to go through with it.
Yep, live in Southern WI, go to school in NW WI, biggest thing in common? Big drinkers! And Packer fans. *shudder*

If you ever feel like having a fantastically expensive [or expansive] vacation, I recommend you head out to the Okanogan Lake country in British Columbia for a beer and/or wine tour. Specifically Osoyoos.

I hated beer... Up until a month ago. I honestly don't know what happened. I have heard of people slowly growing onto beer. It happened to me instantly.

I woke up one day and was like "you know what, I like beer".

So yeah. I have pretty nooby taste in beer though, the most eccentric beer I had was probably Keystone Light.

Depending on how old you are, it is said to grow onto you. I hated it, but I love it now.

Sugar rush? lol.

Sorry, have to disagree on that one.

No sugar rush ever made me hit on a 44 year-old (and, er, succeed) and piss in a flower pot.

(Sounds so enticing, don't it?)

I wasn't questioning your age. I was just saying that it might take a while to get used to. Understandable, seeing how it really does taste like salty ass for a while. It is really strange, I only started liking it recently.

There are different styles of beer though. First one I had was in a sweaty basement drinking mildly chilled PBR out of a plastic cup (I miss the high school punk scene) and it was like dirty water. I then had an amber, thought it tasted like rusty iron and chalk. Then I had a stout, and I was in bliss. After of few of those, you sample back down. I can drink PBR, operative word can, and wheat beers if I don't want something as heavy. However, I still cannot drink ambers.

I guess what I am trying to get at is. Just because you don't like Pepsi doesn't mean you don't like soda. And you can easily tell when you are passing that line for puking, it generally occurs one drink after you realize you can't keep balance or talk properly anymore.

A beer and a fag go hand in hand. Giving that I smoke I also drink. I usually drink Tuborg and Becks with the odd Stella Artois.

well u see the first time (and only) i drank molson canadian, coors, gin whisky(cinnamon tasting wasnt too bad but still tasted bad), vodka. the reason why i drank that much was because my friends said the same thing, that not all alcohol is the same, but really they were all bad.

well apparently my friends lack ur sense of self control, cause they drink tons of beer and other forms of liquor and take shot of evercelear (EVERCLEAR!!!)

I drank Everclear when I was on a mission, cheapest alcohol that isn't bad wine. Also, your liver doesn't naturally produce the enzymes that breakdown alcohol properly until you've drank it a few times so if you try to go one for one with seasoned drinkers, you will get sick. But it does all come down to taste. If you like coffee, you should go for a darker beer (stout), if you aren't sure pick up a Summer Shanty from Leinenkugel. It isn't another American pale-ale but an actual wheat beer they double with some lemon. It is the beer if you're not sure you want beer.
