I think the title says it all really... what games made you feel like a total badass and which ones are limper than a dead jellyfish...

For me...

Worst has to go to good old Oblivion, in which the combat was a mixture between Benny Hill runabouts and Monty Python's Holy Grail... made even worse by the absolutely retarded friendly NPCs whose favourite combat tactic was to run straight in front of your weapon swings...

The best is a toss up between Kratos's manic ballet of violence and F.E.A.R. 2's super fun enemy AI and chunky arsenal.

Halo 3 can make you feel pretty awesome if you can get into a real nice groove, cutting people down online one after the other, especially if they all come after you at once. Worst would have to be ANY fighting game, because (to me) they're just all so damn stiff. Two people beating on each other, with little to no other dynamic action kills the atmosphere for me.

I think the combat in Beyond good and evil pissed me off a bit... and mostly the combat in any PC from console ported game or console in mind PC game. Good combat... hmmm... Well... I suppose thief...

Mass Effect has combat better than Gears of War. And your characters are fully customizable.

Worst? Hellboy on PC... GAAAH!! WHERE'S MY REPRESSOL?!

When CoD4's muliplayer deathmatch gets you in a certain groove it feels transcendent.

For an A-list game the one I can't stand is Fallout 3. The VATs system feels repetitive after a few hours and the run&gun gameplay is impossibly weak.

Timeshift: It made me feel like a spitball and straw would be better against the enemies than the machinegun they gave me.

BF Bad Company and Mercs 2: Now those 2 games make you feel like a badass. Nothing is safe from your weapons.

I enjoyed the Devil May Cry combat, 'tis pretty funky, and I enjoy turn-based RPGs, although I wouldn't call it riveting.

Also, Worms. Not only is it a brilliant and addictive concept (assuming you're playing with friends) but it is pretty damn awesome.

As for bad combat, any card-based game for a start. Also, the Metal Gear Solid series, excluding 3 and 4, has bland melee combat, although it's hardly the emphasis in the games.

Also, despite the similarities between the two, I love Kingdom Hearts's combat, but really hated Rogue Galaxy's.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. That has got to be one of the clunkiest and most unintuitive fighting systems I have ever tried to use, although the fact that you could utilise the Prince's platforming skills was pretty cool.

Still, at least the other two games, Warrior Within and The Two Thrones made it better.

I forgot to mention Prey. Each gun you aquired felt even lamer and less powerfulthan the last and none of them were accurate or fun to use.

hmmm, as for best, im going to go with prince of persia 3, with the whole you can either run and and slaughter them all or jump about quicktime killing them all, and when you killed off a whole horde of the most absolute badass baddies, it made you feel utterly untouchable. whereas worst.... im gonna go with blinx: the time sweeper, just cos it was flinging objects at giant blobs, over and over again.

Well he speaks the truth.

Which is to say, I do agree.
I enjoyed the combat in both, though not immediately great, once you got the hang of the power wheely thingy and learned how to level properly with your squad it became great fun.

The sniper rifle was just lame though.

Indeed, the sniper was way underpowered. Snipers are supposed to be a 1 shot kill, or at least 2 shot-rapid-succession kill without overheating.
The only 1 shot kills with the sniper rifle were in the lower difficulties at higher levels.
Doesn't help a lot when I'm trying to get through "insanity" difficulty...

All weapons did overheat a little too fast in my opinion, at least compared to the damage dealt before overheating.

COD4 is fantastic. The pace is just right to allow the weapons to work well in the atmosphere provided. Basically the whole game gels with you right at the centre, love it.

Worst would probably be anything like FFVIII etc. I simply cannot stand turn based spell casting stuff, it is simply crap.

Yeah and i actually found the pistol to be a better weapon than the assault rifle in many situations...

By the way what is better... Polonium or incendiary or tungsten and shredder???? I cant figure out if polonium does more damage to certain types of enemy

who here remembers Black, for the ps2? i always loved the combat in that. the level where you have to gunfight your way across a bridge, AWESOME. worst combat was too human. never felt comfortable with the analog sticks for combat and movement.
also due to the fact that i had one of those cheap mad catz controllers and after a while if felt like you had no skin left on your thumbs

Dude, if you thought the combat in Oblivion was bad, you should have played morrowind. Imagine the dice roll, turn based style combat of a JRPG, but in ral time where you always miss even if you have the reticule dead fucking center on the enemy, a 2 hits from a rat can kill you at level 14(assumeing its Blighted).

From the stats in the Strategy Guide:

Incendiary Rounds:
Incendiary Rounds consist of a thermite paste that clings to, and burns through, nearly any known substances.
DoT= 5 seconds @ 10 dmg/sec
+2 dmg/level
-10% to targets accuracy
additional -2%/level

Polonium Rounds:
This upgrade stamps a miniscule amount of radioactive poonium into every round fired, effectively poisoning enemy targets. It also prevents enemy regeneration.
+40% toxic dmg
additional +5%/level
DoT= 5 dmg/sec
+1 dmg/sec per level

Tungsten Rounds:
Tungsten rounds are typically smaller projectiles fired at higher velocities to increase penetrating power.
+25% dmg to synthetic targets
additional +5% dmg/level

Shredder Rounds:
Designed to break apart on impact for maximum damage, these rounds are particularly effective against living targets.
+25% dmg to organic targets
additional +5% dmg/level

I've not noticed a significant difference between Shredder and Tungsten rounds.
Also I've not been able to find out if Polonium Rounds only affects organic enemies or does any dmg to synthetics at all.
Nor have I been able to find out if Incendiary Rounds DoT stacks with each shot, i.e
a single Incendiary Rounds IV shot does 5 dmg/sec over 10 seconds = 50 dmg
and five shots does 25dmg/sec over 10 sec= 250 dmg.

This I don't know, and have not been able to find a viable answer through experience or google.

But the stats posted may help you some

Probably not the worst ever, but right now I'm pissed at the combat in the new prince of persia. It sucks, either that or I just can't get the hang of it. I feel like I spend the entire battle blocking instead of actually being able to fight! Grrrr . . . I really enjoy the rest of the game though.
Best combat for me is God of War, I just can't get enough of the chain blades and fun combos. Also the special "o" kills are awesome!
