For an A-list game the one I can't stand is Fallout 3. The VATs system feels repetitive after a few hours and the run&gun gameplay is impossibly weak.
I agree. I love the game, but after a certain point, it is just annoying to kill people because the choices are stop for several seconds to VATs them or spend a minute or two attempting to kill them without using it. This is especially bad for me once I reached the higher levels and wanted to just roam around. It breaks my rhythm to have VATs someone whenever I run across an enemy.

Best Combat: Starcraft! ^^

Worst: I'm not sure. I can't really say, as all of the games I've played that have questionable combat just take some getting used to. If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with Oblivion. I love the game, but th whole NPC running in front of you thing just gets frustrating.

Best:

Prince of Persia Two Thrones: Honestly, I went out of my way to use the speed kills as much as I could, and whenever you were the dark prince, the combat just goes absolutely crazy.

God of War: Best combat in any game ever ever ever.

Halo: It takes the simple joys and dreams of wanting to be a space marine, adds some really cool (albeit not very original) weapons, and then tells you, have fun. Oh, and they let you jump pretty high. Just don't play where there are screaming pubescent wankers.

Half Life: Gravity gun. Nuff said

Ninja Gaiden: Some of the deepest combat I've ever seen in any hack and slash game ever.

Mass Effect: Much better than Gears of War. Mass Effect has a lot of strategy and implementation of the leveling system, and the cover system is great.

And now.... the worst.

Sands of time: unintuitive, clunky, monotonous, and very dull. combat is best avoided.

Spiderman 2: Mash this button to not get raped.

Morrowind: No comment.

Cheers for all that! It seems to me that polonium rounds are the best so but whether or not I like em because they fire green goo!

Probably not the worst ever, but right now I'm pissed at the combat in the new prince of persia. It sucks, either that or I just can't get the hang of it. I feel like I spend the entire battle blocking instead of actually being able to fight! Grrrr . . . I really enjoy the rest of the game though.
Best combat for me is God of War, I just can't get enough of the chain blades and fun combos. Also the special "o" kills are awesome!
The combat in POP drove me nuts too, it wa totally unfulfilling and based on stupid QTES and counters, you felt underpowered against even the weakest enemies. It was truly lame, and then on top of that you had to fight each boss four times which was about as much fun as repeatedly smacking my head with a brick.

Well he speaks the truth.

Which is to say, I do agree.
I enjoyed the combat in both, though not immediately great, once you got the hang of the power wheely thingy and learned how to level properly with your squad it became great fun.

The sniper rifle was just lame though.
Indeed, the sniper was way underpowered. Snipers are supposed to be a 1 shot kill, or at least 2 shot-rapid-succession kill without overheating.
The only 1 shot kills with the sniper rifle were in the lower difficulties at higher levels.
Doesn't help a lot when I'm trying to get through "insanity" difficulty...

All weapons did overheat a little too fast in my opinion, at least compared to the damage dealt before overheating.
Yeah and i actually found the pistol to be a better weapon than the assault rifle in many situations...

By the way what is better... Polonium or incendiary or tungsten and shredder???? I cant figure out if polonium does more damage to certain types of enemy
From the stats in the Strategy Guide:

Incendiary Rounds:
Incendiary Rounds consist of a thermite paste that clings to, and burns through, nearly any known substances.
DoT= 5 seconds @ 10 dmg/sec
+2 dmg/level
-10% to targets accuracy
additional -2%/level

Polonium Rounds:
This upgrade stamps a miniscule amount of radioactive poonium into every round fired, effectively poisoning enemy targets. It also prevents enemy regeneration.
+40% toxic dmg
additional +5%/level
DoT= 5 dmg/sec
+1 dmg/sec per level

Tungsten Rounds:
Tungsten rounds are typically smaller projectiles fired at higher velocities to increase penetrating power.
+25% dmg to synthetic targets
additional +5% dmg/level

Shredder Rounds:
Designed to break apart on impact for maximum damage, these rounds are particularly effective against living targets.
+25% dmg to organic targets
additional +5% dmg/level

I've not noticed a significant difference between Shredder and Tungsten rounds.
Also I've not been able to find out if Polonium Rounds only affects organic enemies or does any dmg to synthetics at all.
Nor have I been able to find out if Incendiary Rounds DoT stacks with each shot, i.e
a single Incendiary Rounds IV shot does 5 dmg/sec over 10 seconds = 50 dmg
and five shots does 25dmg/sec over 10 sec= 250 dmg.

This I don't know, and have not been able to find a viable answer through experience or google.

But the stats posted may help you some
Thanks!!

Hail, all mighty speaker of truth.

The combat in Assassin's Creed. I don't know what to make of it. The moves pulled by Altair LOOK amazing every time, but once you realise that it is just repetitive button-mashing like every other fighting game out there, it's like, mehhhhhhh. That and you can just use the grab move and execute the opponent while they're down. :p

well it is a tie for me between bourne conspiracy (despite the fact that the gunplay sucked, the fighting was excellent) or gears of war 1 (it was a thinking mans shooter)

the worst goes to mirrors edge. it was orginal but the fighting sucked.

Okay, you can put it that way if you want...
LOL I was merely implying that a few regulars may disagree strongly but actually I seem to have been proven wrong!
How so?
In the way that a few people feel mass Effect has stronger combat than Gears.

As for me I love them both but prefer the meaty leadslinging in Gears, it just feels more satisfying.

I agree, but if you ask me, the two systems are quite different. The cover systems aren't even close to similar in the way they are enacted. and the entire ability to customize the effects of your weapons makes it too different to accurately compare. And the Mass Effect combat feels... I don't know... choppy is as close to it as I could describe.

for me, the combat in ninja gaiden 2 made me feel like a god
worst would go to................. oblivion, i loved the game but if i got into a fight with swords, which was rare, it was dull, and the rare times i had someone fighting with me, the only problem i had was blowing em up with my arrows of immolation

That was such a huge flaw in ME I mean what a stunning looking game but the frame rate slowdown turned simply walking around the citadel into being at a nineties strobe filled rave up...

Well I don't mean the frame rate... it was something about the combat... I just don't know exactly what word to use to describe it.
