Best:
Harry Mason (Silent Hill)
Went through hell for his daughter

Adam Fenix (Gears of War)
Marcus turned out great

James McCloud (Star Fox)
His son is awesome

Eli Vance (Half Life)
Never stopped loving Alyx seemed like a great guy

Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell)
Seemed like a great dad

Big Daddy (Bioshock)
Will do anything to protect there kids

William Birkin (Resident Evil)

I was an absentee father I missed my kids growing up.

Worst: Norman from Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald. He makes you teach some random kid to catch a Pokemon, and later on makes you beat him to earn a gym badge.

Best: Actually, I can't think of any "good" fathers. Raphael from SoulCalibur is mine, I suppose.

I'll agree with you on Eli Vance, but I would have put James from Fallout in the Best column. He raised you up until the point where you could survive on your own, then went off to make the world better for you at any cost. The various tapes left by him show that he loved you very much.

Even though Marcus turned out moderatley ok, Adam Fenix neglected him for most of his life because of his and his wife's scientific pursuits. That's part of the reason he is such good friends with Dom, because he spent a lot of time with the Santiago family.

To go on an extremely long journey and in the end sacrifice yourself for the safety of your daughter is pretty devoted.

- Bowser, though the technicalities of his relationship with Bowser Jr. are questionable at best. Let's just say he's a good father for sharing with his son the family business.

Now as his relationship to the Koopa Cousins (to which I think he might be their uncle or something), that's a different Story. Least there's no Uncle's Day.

- Your Grandfather in some of the Harvest Moon titles was pretty great... though if only he could have left that farm in better condition.Really Grandad? No kitchen or bathroom? Did you just do it all on the field?

Worst:

- Kranky Kong. Sure he's been through a lot, kidnapping Paulina and having to be saved after being captured by his son. You'd think he'd be grateful for that. But no, all he does now is hit you over the head while trying to teach you lessons, feed you untested potions, and throw explosive barrels at you when you disturb him with your hippity hop music.

Big Boss -
Repeated attempts to kill his sons. Plus, 2/3 of them didn't turn out so well.

Adam Fenix -
Only played Gears 1 but from the sound of it, Marcus was neglected his entire life from his dickhole father.

He goes through so much crap and works so hard for his family.
Plus, it's a recent game so he's fresh on my mind.

James (your dear papa) of Fallout 3
I know you are pretty focused on the whole "abandoned in the vault" thing, but he did so much good things.
He just seemed to love his kid so much. He put changing the entire world for the better on hold just so he could raise his offspring safely (although perhaps not PROPERLY, depending on how you played).
Plus, Liam Neeson. Come on.
Every parent he ever plays is a papa wolf.

Sam Fisher would be an awesome dad. Let alone the fact that his design in Conviction looks a bit like my own dad if you squint a bit, he's just so awesome and no one would ever bully you since your dad is Sam freaking Fisher and you don't mess with Sam Fisher.

Hard to say, I don't think I've thought about it, before...

Dirk from Tales of Symphonia probably deserves a mention. Dude's living on the surface (dwarves usually prefer underground homes) mainly to take care of his adopted son, and he's done a pretty good job raising Lloyd. Not to mention he's helpful and understanding whenever you see him in-game, while still firm.

Jecht of FFX is a worst. He was a jerk to his kid and tries to kill him at the end. Even if he really did care, he had an awful way of showing it.
I can't really think of a best. Maybe Wakka in FFX-2 since he's a pretty cool guy
