My choice would have to be Destry. Spending money on their music was rather an easy decision.

For free listen...

I'm utterly SHOCKED by the amount of people who don't know who Portishead are, and I hate myself for not discovering them sooner. They were codifiers of trip-hop!
This. Portishead are excellent, waiting for them to do a UK tour. If you like trip-hop, give Urchin a try (not the Iron Maiden spin-off band), they're fantastic.

Nightwish was that way for me, and then I found out they were huge from years ago... I mean shit, when I found them, they already had like six CDs out.
tell me about it, i didnt find out about them until dark passion play was out, yet ive STILL never met anyone who knew about them already except for literally 2 people.

also there was this one 1 guy who i met who was an exchange student from the czech republic who heard of them, but was not a big fan, so i guess that means they really are a big thing, just not in the United States

on the upside, im going to see them live on monday. so i have only 1 thing to say.

The Senate. Although I heard they broke up, I used to really enjoy going to their shows when I would visit Seattle. They're extremely talented, and it's nice seeing an all-acoustic act.

Also, I'm never sure how popular Flobots are outside Colorado. I think they get national attention, but they're still kind of a niche band...but probably my favorite band right now (especially their new album, Circle in the Square).

If anyone's into chiptunes, you should check out the original works of Octapus. This person is awesome and even let me use their music for one of my own projects. http://www.youtube.com/user/octapusmusic?feature=CAQQwRs%3D

A British Band called Proxies. They played our university one night as a warm up for Hadouken (a known warm up band for Pendulum) we had never heard of them before then, but we already had our drinks and thought that it was worth listening to a shitty band if we could be at the front for Hadouken, so we made our way to the uncrowded barrier. They opened with their own song simply called "!" it blew us away and got us immediately interested because it kicks off with the Pokemon battle music. EVERY head in the club turned and we felt a crush of bodies behind us. They were an amazing opener and a good act to kick off the night. If you like bands like Hadouken (if you have never heard of them give them a go) and Pendulum I completely recommend them.

check them out here : http://proxiesmusic.com/

The best thing about it is their first EP (Containing "!" and another great song "Trojan") is free to download through the website

Saw another great band when attending the 2012 Download festival in one of the smaller stages called Dive Bella Dive (a crappy name undeserving of the good music they play and a shitty twilight reference) Their song 'Animal' is particularly good

I'm not a hipster and listen to a wide range of music, both massively popular and not, but these are the two best finds I have had in ages. My first epiphany being Modest Mouse

I stumbled on them a while ago.. I can't even remember how but I instantly loved them, they have an ep and an album out right now but they still don't have a Wikipedia page so I'd say they qualify for this thread.

Like 3 days ago i heard a couple songs by Eve 6 and they're amazing.

Same with Michael Penn, who i became aware of thanks to Cracked. One of those one-hit-wonders that deserved way more than being known for "No Myth". This, i think, is his best work.

It's a little different from a lot of what's been posted here, but one of my favorite acts out there is Angry Johnny and the Killbillies.

To best describe their style it's sort of an alt-country vibe, with a little rock-a-billy and bluegrass thrown in at times, some gut-wrenching vocals, and the occasional song about murder (they call their genre "bloodgrass").

Here's their website: http://www.getangry.com/

And one of my favorite live versions of one of their songs:

My contribution would be Flashguns, they had a few songs but broke up recently. My favourite of theirs is 'I dont not love you' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhAQM6JXrD8

No Neutral Milk Hotel yet?

Neutral Milk Hotel.

I've read that they're popular on some places online, but rarely anyone mentions them in real life. So I guess that makes them obscure.

The only one I can think of at the moment is Miracle of Sound, but I'm guessing that he doesn't count (at least not here anyway).

I've been on this kick of listening to newer bands that sounds like they're from the 80's. I'm really diggin' Tesla Boy, M8, and Hurts. All fantastic music that just, makes you feel something, ya' know?

also, the nerdy part of me wants someone to make an fmv of Bioshock to Hurt's "The Water". Just puttin' it out there...

I honestly can't tell you. If I have never heard of them, how am I to know if they are the best?

In all seriousness I started out liking Otep when they came to town to cover for Static-X. After the Otep set, Static-X sounded horrible. I've been a fan since (though they have become much more popular).

Since it would be tacky as all hell to plug my own band lol. I'm going with "Stolen Babies" out of LA. They just released a new album and are touring with Devin Townsend but no one I talk to knows who they are.
