The US cover freaking sucks.

While the Japanese is just fun, but not really that great.

Still infinitely superior to the US cover. What the serious **** were they thinking with that?
Now that difference is just hilarious. And fits every stereotype of the american.

I don't know that many, two I find fitting:
Transistor:

Fallout 3 (well, all Fallout games, because they show a cool thing you get really late)

Best covert art? Clearly the answer has to be Mega Man.

No but seriously, I'm a big fan of Wolfenstein The New Order's box art, sans the "DOOM BETA" text.

It's not "minimal" but I think the newest Majora's Mask cover is a nice one.

Sure you have Link front and center and off of his alternative forms are also pretty noticeable, but then you have the NPCs who arguably play a larger role in the game than Link himself and of course the giant moon in the background is the largest feature, which is something that looms over you for the entire course of the game. Even Link is partially hidden by a mask, so that hints at the importance of using them.

To me the US cover gets second place, the japanese one is really bad, it looks like fan art plus some really terrible photoshop effects, that smoke in the corner is really bad.

OT: The game sucked balls but the cover was good

Though it's probably pretty unknown at this point, I always liked the cover art to the game Folklore on the PS3.

It portrays the two main characters, backed up by some of the strange and odd creatures that they learn to summon in order to make their way through a very weird but colorful world.

I should really go back and finish that game...

I think that the Xenoblade Chronicles cover does a great job at capturing the game's overall feel:

The cover really gives the sense that there's going to be an adventure in a massive, beautiful world with a constant, looming threat. That sums up the game very well, and the aesthetics are quite nice.
I haven't played any of the Xenoblade games, but this cover really just gives me a Shadow of the Colossus vibe. It looks like you will be fighting a large threat in a mostly empty world. Again, that's just my impression from the box art.

I never even heard of this game, but I like the cover. I think Ni no Kuni could've benefitted from this approach: show us the main character and the roster of awesome creatures he can summon. Instead we get...

Gee.
The Japanese version fares better, it does the group photo thing, but I think it's lacking another important thing from the Folklore cover, which is composition: protagonists in different levels of foreground, critters in the background, and the setting looming way behind. The Ni no Kuni J cover kinda just plasters everybody into a mush.

You can do better, Ghibli! Just look at your damn poster art!

Okami PS2 version for the U.S is obviously really good.
That was honestly the first time I bought a game based on the cover art alone. I remimber just looking at this cover and instantly wanting to buy it.

Well it's certainly as faithful a cover as it can be to the aesthetic of the game it represents.
