I'm a bad driver so Ridge Racer is my favourite racing game. Its actually a good thing to drive sideways! Also PGR on Xbox, because it was the first racing game that made me care about driving well.

Also forgot that you can drift just fine in LFS. All you have to do is modify a few things like tyre pressure and gear ratio.

If we're talking this generation, then it's between Dirt and Grid. had a lot of fun with both of those. However, any game released after 1995 owes a lot to sega Rally Championship. Still have it for Saturn, and is one of the few games I regularly play more than once a month all the time.

Flatout 3: Ultimate Carnage provided endless hilarious crashes, and the party mode was great fun to play with some friends, so I'll go with that.
Hmm, I think the first racing game I ever played was a motorcycle game on the Sega Master System, the name's escaping me however. It annoyed me, I don't think I EVER finished a race lol.
I think I'm gonna have to go with either the Gran Tourismo series, Wipeout (because, let's face it: Zone is AWESOME), or HydroThunder.
Gran Tourismo (the first) becuase it had my all time favorite car to race ('95 Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo MR).
Otherwise, I just really like the realism as far as the way cars move. Need For Speed bugs me because the vehicles just don't MOVE quite right.

Test Drive Unlimited gets my vote, think I've racked up a few days worth playing time on that one
Nice to see so many votes for Burnout, sure EA are involved, but they managed to not get a commitee together to demand the fun was stripped out. EA knocking aside, the Burnout series, pretty much remind a player WHY they ever bothered to pick up a controller in the first place.

Anyway, yeah, F-Zero GX is my favorite -racing- game...but best driving game? I'd probably say TMNF since I love it, though it's unrealistic. I've played TOCA 3, and that seemed pretty good, as Sega GT did as well, but I haven't played GT4 or 5, so...my opinion seems kind of empty.
GTR2 with the World Super GT mod. You haven't tried realism until you try to navigate the Enzo Fxx round Monza with all the driver aids turned off.
The car offers the most realistic exprience of high performance driving I've seen based on the fact that to get the most out of it you need to be progressive with all the controls to get a good lap. None of this approach the corner, slam the brakes on turn and then hammer the throttle down. Do that and you'll lock the front wheels and lose the back end before you even get close to the apex.
