Gran turismo stopped being good after GT2 when they screwed up the handling physics. Not being able to do even a basic donut/drift (the cars had no feeling of wieght or inertia) and the high end cars bouncing like crazy at high speed killed it for me. Happily switched to Forza 2.

I loved me some Rollcage 2. What ever happened to that series?
Dude! I was just thinking the other day that we need an updated version of Rollcage, I played the hell out of those games!

San Fransisco Rush was an awesome driving game, not really that realistic, but still heaps of fun.

Burnout Paradise is awesome.

Midnight Club Las Angeles is also pretty damn good.

I have Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on PS3, but hardly play it, too realistic for my liking, I drive a realistic car on realistic roads every day, when I play video games, I prefer to be doing something a bit more removed from reality... then again, you can't actually crash the cars in Gran Turismo, which makes a mockery of the whole 'most realistic driving simulator' thing.

The problem I had with gran turismo was that it was so realistic it ceased to be fun.

IMO driving games should be slightly stylised such as with the burnout or the project gotham series.

I'd still say Need for Speed: Underground 2 is my favourite.

Heheh, I found that funny. So realistic it ceased to be fun. Gran Turismo? Nah. It's not all that realistic I assure you.

Umm depends. Most played now is Forza2.. just so much to play with for a car nut like me.. before that it was GT on PS2

Most fun id have to go with Mario Kart 64 or even GTA if you consider that a driving game, I enjoy just running from cops..

Burnout Revenge. The Traffic Attack mode (or whatever that was called) is the most fun I'll probably ever have in a racing game from now on.

For me, nothing can match the rush I get playing the Burnout games.

I can never get into driving simulations; I always feel like the handling is much too cumbersome.

My favourite's always been PGR2 on the original Xbox. It's got one of the best mixes between arcade and realism with the added fun of having the kudos system before they screwed it up for later games in the series.

Plus it made you work for your cars. You want to drive a supercar, then you're gonna have to start out in a Mini (I'm well aware that GT and many other games let you do this as well, just in PGR4 you could play in supercars from the start if you wanted to.)

Plus nearly all of the cars had much more character than you'll find in any other arcade racing game and once you get used to it, it becomes immense fun to play. And, when you get bored of racing, you can pop to the garage for a blast of Geometry Wars!

Re-Volt, bar none. I bought this game a week after it came out on pc, and I still play it to this day. No other game has ever, or will ever do RC racing this perfectly. The graphics are crisp and clear even though they are 10 years old, and the cars handle wonderfuly. Add to that the massive amount of user content, and you have a timeless classic.

However, Fuel looks like it might start to monopolize my time once it comes out...

Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Everything that made the Need for Speed series great with updated graphics, in my opinion it was the last good Need for Speed game just before they tried to make it too realistic and just screwed it up, which would be why EA is now closing down their department.
I agree with you, but NFS:Shift isn't that bad though :p I pretty like it. Anyways I think it hadn't been released when you posted your comment.

Desert Bus.
What other game has led to over 100,000 dollars being donated to Child's Play this year?

Ah, at least two people have mentioned Rock n Roll racing but i'm afraid they both got it wrong. The SNES version was the only version worth playing and the one on the PSX was really, really terrible.

I'm not a fan of driving sims, more of an arcadey racer myself (to that end, has anyone mentioned GTI Club on the arcade? That game was awesome), but i think GT2 was the best in terms of realism and variety of cars, tracks and races. I didn't play it much, i just used to buy yank muscle cars because they look great lol. Oh and obviously the GTO worth half a million, because it was the best car in the game and the only one you needed outside the special events.

Oh and anyone remember Hard Driving on the NES? Goddamn that game, hours upon hours on the stunt track lol.

Honestly, Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer(think I missed a few ii's there). The first PS version for preference.
In that its not a simulation,(I drive a car , I dont need to pretend to drive) its easy to pick up but balanced enough that you can play it for hours to shave a few seconds off the clock. The track is that well designed that it was enough for a whole game (OK, albeit with a few roadblocks and a mirror mode). And finishing a race by skidding sideways around a long corner into the straight , ALWAYS looks awesome.
Oh and mental Japanese take on Euro Techno > regular racing "licensed soundtrack"(shite remixes and crap nuMetal).

Also Buggy boy on the C64 (you had to be there)

Need for Speed II and the first Colin McRae game. Past the about 1997, the enjoyability of driving games decreased as the graphics quality increased.

Good call on Riiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer dude, I never got bored of drifting backwards round corners on that game. And the little game of Galaga while loading, simply genius that i often wonder at why it never caught on.
