Somebody pushed my nostalgia button a bit ago therefore I need to mention the best Final Fantasy spin-off which is Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest on the SNES.

It was generally passed by since the SNES had Final Fantasy II and III. Mystic Quest was a great game though. It was the first one that showed the boss's physical forms degenerate as you pound the hell out of them. I honestly don't remember too much from it because I haven't played it since my age was missing a digit but what I do remember is the fact that Mystic Quest had the best music out of any Final Fantasy, ever [sub]in my opinion[/sub]

my favourite FF is 8 (very closely followed by 10)

However I think the "best" (best style, well told story e.t.c) is probably 9, however I haven't played it all the way through yet, so can't say for certain.

Having said all that, my favourite character is from FF7.
It's not Cloud
or Sephiroth
or even Vincent.
But Cid, Cid is probably the most believable, well written and most under-rated charcter in the game, or any FF game for that matter.

Played FF to Final Fantasy VII.

Went to play VIII and by the second disc a bit of me had died. And I haven't played a final fantasy since. Except Dissidia but still I only go back to play the first seven, mostly VII, every time I blow off the dust of my PSX.

Even after all these years, FFVII still holds sway over me. I can, have and will play this game over and over and over and... You get the picture. I know it looks dated now, and that the translations can get a bit wonky and you can go away and make a 3 course meal in the time it takes Sephiroth to cast Supernova, but that doesn't matter to me. Everything about the characters and story just won me over so completely. Hell, I still have a major crush on Vincent, and I'm now well over the wrong side of 30.

In fact, I'm hopelessly hooked on everything from VI to IX. I defy anyone to come up with a more inspired method of recruiting a party member than the opera scene in VI (and Ultros!). I may not be the greatest fan of VIII's junction system (too many hours with Materia, probably), but I found the story of it really engaging and the characters were an interesting mix. And what can be said about IX that hasn't been said already? Zidane made for a good change after the darker leads of Cloud and Squall, while Vivi was simply awesome.

The newer ones like X or XII... Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed them immensely. But I don't seem to be able to go back to these with quite the devotion I do with VII. Which is proven by the collection of action figures. And the statue of Vincent. And plushie Cactuars. And the throwing herself at the feet of the Vincent cosplayer she came across at the last comicon.

There's a saying floating around that the first Final Fantasy you play is generally your favourite, and for me that's accurate.

It had far better music than anything in FFVII! Hell, the only good songs were Midgar theme, Aeris' theme, and The final boss battle. FFVI, every theme was beautiful (Listen to the Grand Finale version) and Aria de Mezzo Carrettere was the BEST VG music every created!

Best FF game goes to VII; Best Music FFVI!
Confession time. I'm going to the Distant Worlds concert in London in November, and I'm bringing a box of Kleenex mensize tissues with me in case they play the Aria. I cannot get through that piece without bursting into tears and ruining my mascara.

7>9>6

Was a close call between 7 and 9 since Freya is such an awesome character.

Dragoons rock.

Overall favorite is probably 7 (most well rounded in all aspects)
Second place is 1 (the first! and liked the class combo choices, and the pacing)
Third place is 6 (best overall storyline and most engaging characters)
Fourth place is 9 (great look and feel to the game, more like 1 again)

8 can burn in hell forever.
4 I tried to like and spent hours on, but the job system meant none of the characters had any personality.

Well, played all but 9 (didn't get far into 8 due to the emulator taking a dump basically 8 hours in), 11, 13, 14. My favorite has to be the original. I can sit and play it all day without a thought (and have played nearly all incarnations of it and FF2J) and enjoy it. For over 20 years. I picked it up when I was 7 and my dad had gotten his butt kicked by Chaos and gave up the game.

I learned why over-leveling is bad due to FF1. You see, Chaos gets more powerful the more you level. So at 50 (max) he has EVERYTHING your Black Wizard does, Cure4, AND elemental attacks. When I got older I made my first "challenge" to take him out at 50 just for bragging rights. No Game Genie, no glitches, no exploits. Knight, Ninja, White Wiz, Black Wiz... and a dead timebending demon-god.

Story-wise, 6 is alright I did enjoy the scope and points of view but felt there were TOO MANY, so I found myself not caring for any of them. That's where I liked 5, 7, 12 and especially 10. I cared about the characters because you watched them grow. Yes, Cloud was an emo douchebag but you learned WHY, Seriously wouldn't YOU be if your best friend was killed protecting you? I know I did when Mom died. Tidus was annoying (mostly his voice, I mean really, different voice and no one would complain) but I found myself enjoying his quirks and optimism. Vaan was similar to Tidus in the beginning due to similar backgrounds (what a shock! Similar backgrounds producing similar results... alert the media) but you really watched him grow because of his friends AND better his friends. You FELT the friendships in X and XII and that made them better.

It's easy to tear the series down, but there is a reason why people keep coming back.

The first one, FF5, and Crisis Core were the best.
Zack = the coolest dude in the whole dang series.

You're going to get a lot of different answers but my personal favourite is 8. I'm not sure why entirely, I love the music and I love Triple Triad. After 8 being on top I couldn't call a second place because I like a lot of other ones equally for different reasons. 7 and 12 have enjoyable characters (7 also has an excellent soundtrack), 9 has a great setting and mostly good characters (Amarant has no place in the story), 10 has a great battle system, music and the best pacing in the series. And that's just the playstation era, 6 has a great story, and in 4 you fly an airship to the moon. To the moon!

The only Final Fantasy game I actively dislike though is FF1. It may be a classic, but it is boring and slow with out dated mechanics and the pacing is just awful.

My order...not counting any of the spin off games (tactics, the chocobo games, or crystal for example) only those that are a console and not a handheld (although I did enjoy many of them) or mmorpg.

FF, FF7, FF10, FF12, FF9, FF8, FF3, FF13, FF8, FF6, FF5, FF2, FF4

I like your take on that. Miss those terrific bastards. Terra, Locke, Celes, Edgar, Sabin, Shadow and his trusty dog Interceptor, Cyan, Mog, Setzer, Strago, Relm heck even Kefka, General Leo and Emperor Gestahl were fresh.. *sniff*

Ughhh, now my rock-hard balls are in nostagia mode, sheesh.. >.<'

IX for me. Great story, great characters (and main man Zidane isn't some emo douchebag! HOORAY!), and a lush, beautiful world to explore - what's not to like?

Also, composer Nobuo Uematsu has said that the soundtrack for FF IX is the best he's ever written. I'm inclined to agree.

My List is including all games that bear the Final Fantasy Branding... never done this so here we go.

FFVII - All time favorite game for me
FFVIII - Music is phenomenal and first Final Fantasy I bought on launch day
FFXII - Took the battle system somewhere new and loved it, too bad I was in the minority
FFVII - Crisis Core - This game made my life complete with knowing Zacks full background story
FFXIII - Loved what I have played enough to rank it here. Still working through it. Too busy
FFX - First PS2 Final Fantasy, loved every minute... and Lulu's boobs
FFVI - Amazing game from the SNES, a must play!
FFV - Another great game from SNES. Get anthologies and enjoy both V and VI.
FFIII - For DS, great 3D remake of the game.
FF Tactics - Boy do I love this game. Such a challenging one too.
FFXI - First MMORPG I ever played and have lots of in-game memories
FF - PSP remake was great. A fast play if you want to just power though it in a few hours.
FF Tactics Advanced - Great story and gameplay. Part of the XII universe.
FFVII - Advent Children - I know, not a game, but I still loved it!
Dissidia - Final Fantasy - Loved it even thought it's just a cash in. I love Cloud vs Squall!
FF Tactics Advanced 2 - Again, solid game and story.
Final Fantasy X-2 - Final Fantasy's take on Charlie's Angels... oh and the Hot Springs.
FFIV - For DS again, good game but not a earth shaker.
FFXIV - Currently play when I feel like grinding in an MMO, still haven't payed a subscription
FFIX - Good game, ending left a bad taste in my mouth - phenomenal music though
FFII - I don't think I will ever muscle through this game, its the worst FF imo

Final Fantasy Games I haven't played but mean to:
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus - Heard the story was pretty good, gameplay so-so
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - All of em
Final Fantasy: 4 Warriors of Light - Heard was pretty fun, I played the beginning but died.

EDIT: Changed order of some things.

6...
but only because my rose tinted shades are welded to my skull
it's also one of the few where i can actually tell the different pieces of overworld / town / etc music apart, and play them on an instrument

5, 7, 9 are good fun too

i can stand 4 and 8, and am dragging myself through 10 without really "feeling" it so much

the others i can take or leave, largely because i'm no fan of the NES graphics/sound (NES fans: don't even start, please; those who I know in person have been evangelising for about a decade now) and haven't (yet) had access to the later ones... but haven't heard too many others rave about them either. it's got a bit samey TBH.
