S.T.A.L.K.E.R human enemies are terrifyingly smart at times, they actively flank you and use distractions. They don't all move in brainless determined unison like most game enemies and even a firefight with a single foe can be dangerous if he catches you out of position. They also don't sit behind the same cover for a whole minute spraying gunfire ineptly every 8 seconds while you sprint up and jam a fork in their eyehole.
I agree. Whilst the games are shit, the AI was pretty damn good.

My would be the halo series AI since it's always to hard to kill the elites and the grunts can be sneaky little gits.
I also fidn the AI in Command and Conquer to be really hard when you set it above normal mode (although I'm not exactly great in RTS games).

Worms.

No kidding. That AI cheats. And it can toss a granade in the pocket of your pants from twenty miles away while standing a wall twice your size with a fancy shaped object on top of it.
Hmm, on second thought, I agree. However, which Worms are you refering to? I am thinking of WWP.

I would also say F.E.A.R.

Also Starcraft AI seems to kick my ass on harder difficulty too often (tho im not really a pro at Starcraft anyway).

Pretty much every 2D version from 2 upwards.

Yeah, I'm going with Worms too. Perfect aim from the other side of the map? With a Bazooka? In high winds? I don't think so.

The AI in Wipeout HD and Burnout 3 has been quite brutal since my very first try on each one of these games. Arcade AI in general can be quite animalistic when it comes to kicking your ass.

But you can still win if you're good enough. Beating a computer in tic-tac-toe is impossible. Therefore, computer versions of tic-tac-toe have better AI.

Unless the opponent is an imbecile, that game should always end in a draw.
As such it doesn't take a smart AI to play tic-tac-toe optimally. Any programmer can code one.

An AI never good just because the game is hard to beat.

Well, it plays by the game's rules and uses all the resources it has to play optimally. If tic-tac-toe is too simple, let's say checkers instead. A properly coded computer always plays a perfect game.

Yes, checkers is a much better example.

Or not, because writing an AI for checkers isn't exactly the same thing as writing an AI for something as complicated as a tactical shooter.

At least, last time I checked nobody was impressed that I managed to walk in a straight line. They were all looking at the drag racers going in a straight line.

No. Tic Tac Toe is just a really easy game to break.
I guess we mean different things with "good AI". I mean "plays well, and can compete with a good human player". What you consider "good" AI I would describe as "complex" or "sophisticated".

The humans in STALKER are awsome, they flank, they flush you out with grenades and are very agreesive just like all FPS should be.
I also like the Elites from Halo Reach, they take cover they use all kinds of armor abilities to avoid you and just love to run to you and kill you when you are hiding, but it seems it was the only AI that Bungie worked on.

I second that. Playing through the deathmatches in WA was no fun at all when you got up to Hero ;o

Personally, I like the AI in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. They seldom run after you wherever you are, instead the enemies actually have to SEE/HEAR you to know where you are.

One time, I was having a shootout with some thugs, killed most of them, then hid and waited for the reinforcements to show up. They didn't run straight to where I was, instead they bolted right past me towards the spot where I had killed those other guys.

It's easy to programme perfection (so I am told) but to programme in mistakes is harder. The computer could work out the perfect nade toss but it cause people to rage, it's better to make it so the computer misses sometimes and make it more human.

I recently watched A.I war vids and that A.I looks pretty good, forcing you to use actual tactics, instead of being about to select everything and attack move it.
