Gonna agree with all the Halo people, I guess. There's flanking, retreating, hiding and all sorts in Reach

And to all the people saying worms - does the computer's ability to perfectly calculate every shot make it good A.I? Surely it would be better if it emulated human mistakes, rather than just running the numbers on each and every shot?

You stole mine stealy thief. Hey get away from my wallet! Got my eye on you...

I did like how the FEAR enemies would flank me and often get me to question if I was an idiot who missed an enemy or if he worked his way around. I did eventually catch some trying to flank me and then I knew it was not all me.

Ok so it wasn't anything great but they still built the feel which is still a victory as the atmoshphere in most games amplifies the stupid enemies. Also thank you for the info I still refuse to change my post as thats how I felt during the fights.

I would also add Halo reach, Blood Bowl (ok maybe I kinda suck), and the Sins of a Solar Empire as long as you don't enter the easy or really hard settings.

Wait where are my car keys?

Not an expert, but of all the AIs I've seen, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars had some pretty good AI. I play Left 4 Dead 2 now and I have to say ET:QW's bots seemed to make much better choices.

No problem, but I do have a question or two though.
The AI does give off the feeling that it's actually intelligent, but it's still stupid AI isn't it? Wouldn't it be better to praise the atmosphere/environment as you mentioned in your post? Something Monolith actually DID do incredibly well?

If they applied the path-finding algorithms used for the city guards when you break the law in Oblivion in the Mars rover missions, we would already be driving down the central boulevard of downtown Marsville, an extinct Martian settlement.

Armored Core Silent Line has an AI that can learn from what you do.

For example you implant the AI in one of your mechs, then as you do arena matches in that mech it learns from what you do.

After around 20 matches with the AI mech it can mimic most of the tactics you used with it, up to and including exploits (I think I once saw the AI mech lure an enemy into a bugged part of the terrain to get them stuck there.)

Makes the Tag-Team arena easier to do since you can select it as your partner.

Final Fantasy Tactics. That game's AI was frighteningly smart for its time, and made the game a real challenge that, nonetheless, was never quite so hard that it stopped being fun.

There's the usual tricks that the enemies will use, such as being smart enough to get out of the area of effect of your spells when you, say, tell one of your Black Mages to cast Fire on some enemies that are grouped together. That's about what I'd expect; I'd do the same thing. But then, sometimes, it gets sneaky.

In one battle, I was up against an Oracle, a few other humans, and some monsters. I'd just ordered one of my party to perform an attack that, if it landed, would do enough damage to kill a member of the opposing team. While my guy was charging up his attack, the Oracle's turn came around. Rather than try to kill the person who was about to kill his friend, the Oracle went over to the guy who was being targeted--keep in mind that the attack HAD NOT LANDED YET, and the guy was still very much alive--and cast Raise on him. I bet you can guess what happened next: My party member's attack landed, the target died, and then the Oracle's Raise spell went off and brought him right back to life. In the end, I know all it comes down to is just the computer calculating the length of time it takes for each action to charge and planning its actions accordingly--much like chess--but at the time, it came across as a VERY clever move. I certainly would never have thought of doing that.

Of course, FFT's AI is not without its flaws, too...like for example in the fight against Izlude, where I kept putting his soldiers to sleep, and he decided that the best way to wake them up would be to Jump on them. XD

S.T.A.L.K.E.R human enemies are terrifyingly smart at times, they actively flank you and use distractions. They don't all move in brainless determined unison like most game enemies and even a firefight with a single foe can be dangerous if he catches you out of position. They also don't sit behind the same cover for a whole minute spraying gunfire ineptly every 8 seconds while you sprint up and jam a fork in their eyehole.
Is this with the "complete" mods or no, because those mods further improve the enemy AI for that game.

Depends on what you consider good AI.
Most AI tend to cheat on higher difficulties and outright ignore rules/restrictions. The majority of games harder modes just mean the AI gets to cheat more.
In RTS they build faster get more income etc
In FPS the enemies are made tougher and do more dmg
This is a good site listing a lot of specifics :D

There are very few games out there where harder difficulty = the AI playing smarter.

I don't get all the guys going on about Halo having great AI overall.
While they're meant to be stupid, Grunts waddle up, shoot a bit, grenade a bit, and die.
Drones come in a big pack, fly around a bit, and die.
Brutes walk up, burst fire when full-auto would be much better and throw grenades, then die.
Jackals stand still, shoot in bursts, then die.
Vehicles do nothing but guard areas.
Hunters are like vehicles, but in Reach they seem a lot smarter as another guy in the thread stated, (but they're nowhere near that degree). Shame that they're less challenging than a couple special ops Grunts on Heroic if you move around a lot and know what they're gunna do next though.

The enemies just don't do anything interesting or even dangerous aside from a couple very easily predictable attacks and movements, though there are a couple exceptions in the latest installment, something Reach's campaign did right I guess.

In Reach, the Elites and Skirmishers are the only enemies who try to avoid a buckshot sandwich probably in the entire series. They tend to take cover and often flank you, (especially Skirmishers) but they don't act like they're in groups and don't take advantage of their environment/cover/squad sizes/etc and their movements very quickly become extremely predictable, if you just don't shoot them soon as they arrive.
Though to be fair, that could be moreso to do with the design and layout of the game itself.

Whatever, Halo's AI just isn't that good.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R's human AI is really good, as someone else stated. The mutant dog's also have a really interesting pack mentality too.
I actually tend to do most stuff at night because there's less humans around. Even if there are a shitload more mutants, (Bloodsuckers...) least I don't have to worry about some exoskeleton kill team outfitted with some of best stuff in the game hunting me down. As much.

AI in Halo: Reach. The Elites are tricky little buggers.
I totally agree. Compared to the earlier Halo AIs, which were pretty smart of their own accord, Reach AI was downright clever. I can't count the number of times the Covenant were able to effectively mess with me in the game and kill me because they were actually using tactics and strategy.

Kudos to Bungie's programming department!
i had the most trouble with the jetpacking elites. as soon as you'd take one of their shields down they would jetpack behind cover and the other 6 would jetpack to a position to shoot at you

the only way the AI fell flat was that it would never pursue you past a certain point, so you could always run away and hide and wait and find weapons with ammo (if you play on legendary with famine on you spend most of your time trying to find a weapon with enough ammo to kill more than 1 or 2 enemies)

Worms has damn good AI.

As for AI on your side I thought the AI in Dragon Age Origins was solid it was good 80% of the time and if you didn't like what it just did you could reach into the AI's brain and rip up the part you don't like.

Is it really that hard for other people? I don't mean to brag, but this is like the fifth time I've heard someone complain about it this week (than again, I read a gaming forum). I can't remember me or my friends ever having any major problems with them. But than again, we all have some hobby that probably improves reflexes.
No. I will dance circles around a punch him in the back until he dies, laughing all the way. I'm just buzzed as fuck on ephedrine and prone to tapping out hyperbolic rants for my own amusement. If anything, I'm impressed at how competent they are at dealing with threats from all directions.

As I said previously, however, they are a ************ and a half on LASO. But then again, what isn't?
nothing. LASO is one of the most difficult things in a game I have ever attempted, including the time i played through fable without leveling up (dodgeroll and longbow). it's nearly impossible if you're by yourself (seeing as most elite shields don't get taken down by a single plasma pistol burst), but playable if you have friends
