Knights of the old Republic, hands down
Far and away my favorite storyline of any, ever. The plot twist was so unexpected... Well, Hell, I still think about it. Same for Kotor 2, even though it wasn't finished. Plot twist was still exciting and fun. None of the boring Level-up bullshit that made me quit Final Fantasy 12 after just getting out of the dungeon... And all of the fun of FORCE LIGHTNING!
What was fun with Kotor 2 was FORCE CRUSH, also the best Hk-47 jokes i've seen. (For those who dont agree, remember the defenition of love by Hk-47)

Half-Life, Bioshock and every GTA following 3.

Why are people actually mentioning Portal?

I'm not saying it wasen't an amazing game, but the story was non-existent.

FF VII and VIII
Half Life series
Halo series
KOTOR
Landstalker
[from what I hear, Mass Effect, but I haven't played it]
Resident Evil 1-3
Silent Hill 1&2
Soleil
Starcraft

And since someone mentioned Earthworm Jim.. the revelation that Doc Duodenum is lactose intolerant literally blew my mind.

Mine would have to be Okami, FFVIII, assassins creed, Diablo (which was one of my first true addictions) i'm sure there are others that i've adored for there stories but my memory is failing me at this time
Hmm, I do love FFVIII, but does it technically have a good plot? I know it's told pretty well and maybe that's enough... And the development story of Squall is probably the best one of all the characters in the series, no matter how much he is hated (for some reason) nowdays.
It's more of how rushed the last part of the game feels, with time compression. :| I do like how Squall's character actually changed, I just, really.. really hated how forced and lame the "love story" was. Squall is one of my favourite characters, though.

Also I totally lost Rinoa in space once and it was BY ACCIDENT, I SWEARZ.

Agreed. It may not be Shakespeare (though i hate Shakespeare) but i love the way the story was presented and the way your supposed to draw your own conclusions. It is by far my favorite game story. I also loved Zelda majoras mask and all its interweaving story-lines.

Fatal hearts. That game is practically nothing but story and exposition, and it's still awesome.

Biohock, if only because you actively had to hunt down the plot instead of it being spoon-fed to you.

Baldur's Gate, the original. I spent quite a while going "why the fuck are all these bounty hunters and assassins after me!?" while slowly uncovering a plot to throw the entire region into war. Much love.

But the master;
Planescape: Torment. The only game to be genuinely epic yet intensely personal. No saving the world, no supervillain with a deathray, just a guy trying to find out who he is.
I will second Planescape: Torment. If there was ever a game to make a movie out of, that would be it.

I would add Shadow of Colossus. You have this odd felling while playing the first time through that killing the Colossi is a bad thing.

Freespace 1&2 also had very good stories. There was a lot of "Oh shit" moments in Freespace 2, realizing the good guys are not going to win.

Myst, the original. Only because you have to find pieces of the story as you go. Every puzzle gave you a little more info on the crazy brothers. It also created a very imaginative setting.

Chess. Best ending ever: the king takes his last step, and FPS Doug yells out 'BOOM! CHECKMATE!' I proceed to take a shit on the other guy's chest while he complains about the lag and how my queen 'warped' toward his king.

Baldur's Gate, for the way it is written and executed.

Metal Gear Solid had no story. Everything was a twist for the sake of being a twist. MGS5 will start with this revealing cut-scene where you will discover that what happened in the first four episodes was all bullshit, and the twist is that you are a halucinating Vietnam War veteran living in the 1960's, nicknamed Big Boss, who was injured in the war and is on an LSD trip with visions of grandeur. You were not a great soldier, and your legacy did not actually fuel the wheels of world conflict. Hideo Kojima is a figment of your imagination because you forgot that the Japanese were not what you were fighting in South East Asia. The trip was that he was tormenting your existence by putting you in a horrible story of no point or relevance. Waking up, you realize that you did not in fact vanquish him triumphantly, but that the drugs simply wore off and that you're still homeless. You take two steps and get run over by a truck. The game ends. My name is on the credits.

You just lost 60 bucks.

The Longest Journey, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 and Final Fantasy VI. These games have awesome stories, and I would gladly replay any of them just for that.

The first 2/3 of Bioshock. After the big reveal, the rest of the game can FRO.

Loved Tales of Symphonia. I mean, sure, it was retreading the ground of about five other RPGs, but I think it was better than any of those five RPGs.

And Portal. I know, I know, the game's concept of utilizing portals was awesome but in the end, I was playing for GlaDOS and to see how things would unfold.

Planescape: Torment
It's probably already been said, but wow, what a great story. For those of you who loves RPG's and haven't played this game...get it now.

Psychonauts. I am the Milkman. My milk is delicious.

Half-Life. I just love the characters. I never played the 1st one, so the story mostly goes right over my head but I've never liked the characters in a video game more.

Oblivion. Not the stories that came with it, though (Shivering Isles was good though). The ones that I make up as I go kick the shit out of anything that Bethesda could come up with, even if I change and/or forget most of the details nearly perpetually. I really can't remember if I was grown in a giant, hollow caliper from the genes of Bob Dole (who was transported to Tamriel via manhole) or if I was just Steve the leper, expert loiterer.

Dammit, you reminded me that I need to buy Planetscape: Torment. Oblivion may be the greatest sandbox RPG currently out, but its story is... well, its like its combat, stiff and uneventful. I still wouldnt agree even if it was smoothen and updated, that game is truly only saved by its modibility.

I will have to say the Baldurs Gate Trilogy, as it introduced me to RPG in general. It also doesnt help that I love Bioware so, though Mass Effect could have been much better.
