Resident Evil. I bought resident evil for the gamecube and HATED it. I sold it back later that week. Over the following year or so, I bought the game several more times thinking that maybe I had misunderstood the game and that I would enjoy it if I gave it another try. I bought and sold the game 3 different times. I finally bought it a fourth time, willing myself to enjoy that damn game... and now it's one of my favorites. I don't know what happened, but ever since then, Resident Evil (and the others like it 0-3) have just clicked. I love me some classic RE now.

Oblivion, but that was mainly due to trying it on Xbox the first time, and then trying it again last year on PC, with High/Ultra settings, and mods, and all the DLC seeing as it was the GOTY edition. (Horse armour, woo!)

The only other game I can think of is Bioshock, I hated it when it made me jump and quit early on. When I came back to it I liked it a bit more, but I still hated it when it made me jump.

Mass Effect.
The first time I played for an hour or so and thought it was a miserable grind. I put it down for a month or more, then decided to give it another chance before uninstalling ...and fell in love.

Final Fantasy XII. I HATED it at first because of the combat and the license thing, but I bought it again a couple years later at cheap-o price to try again and ended up liking it more. It's still not my favorite Final Fantasy, but I will say it's better than Mystic Quest XD.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma. While it was tough as nails and kind of retro once I gave it a shot it was definitely worth while.

Mass Effect. I just wasn't interested in it at first, and it didn't help that I went to Noveria first, which is easily the worst planet in the game. Got to Matriarch Benezia, got my ass handed to me by her Asari Commandos, then rage quit. Luckily, at the time, I had only rented it, so I wasn't out of money, but I told my friend what I thought about it, since he's a major Mass Effect fan, he convinced me to try it out again. I borrowed it from him, played it, found myself more interested in it this time (Not sure why) and made sure to not go to Noveria until I was forced to. I loved it, and the series is now in my top 5 favorite series.

I'm hoping that happens to me with Mass Effect. So far I'm finding the combat bland and the story to be extremely padded. Maybe when I find the patience to sit through the side stuff and finally get to the meat of the story, I'll like it.

Mass Effect 2

So I loved Mass Effect 1, I played the hell out and when I picked up ME2 I expected pretty much more of the same. The ME1 talent system was gone, which bugged me. They switched to the thermal clip system, so I had to get used to reloading (after training myself in ME1 not to use the 'R' key because it tossed a grenade). It took me at least two missions to realize that my health regenerated as well as my barrier. They tied the sprint and take cover functions to the same key, which STILL baffles me because it means Shepherd has a nasty habit of dashing down a hallway and suddenly deciding to throw himself against a chest high wall.
But the biggest deal breaker: I'm working for Cerberus, the organization that sicked thresher maws on my unit for no discernible reason. The guys I'd spent a good chunk of ME1 massacring wholesale. I decided "fuck that" and put the game down in disgust.

A while later, at the urging of a friend, I picked it up again and had a blast. *Shrug*

I do this all the time, but the one that I ended up loving the most was Oblivion.

First playthrough, I got everything I had taken off me by a guard because I'd stolen it all, and my last save was pretty much the start of the game.

About 6 months later I had a massive urge to play it again, so I chose to be a good and honest citizen this time.

Lesson learned.

Playing as a Soldier? If so, i strongly recommend playing with tech or biotic abilities, LOTS more fun.

For me, it was Super Metroid. Rented it as a kid, thought "WTF do i do? Where do i go? Arrrgghhh!!!" Then re-discovered it years later. Now it's probably my fave game of all time.

Also Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Didn't really get into the story the first time round, but now i'm on my second playthrough i'm appreciating it a lot more.

Who?

OT: Uhh, I can't really think of any games that I actually gave a second chance for. I tend to either love the game or outright hate it. There's not much middle ground.

Though i would say there are a lot of games that I played when I was younger that I hated because I couldn't read (we're talking 6 or 7 years old here :p), but now love. Earthbound was one.

R.U.S.E

I played it I liked it. I mainly played with friends but when the phase passed I didn't see a reason to play it again. Anyway a month or so ago we were in the mood for it and now it's at the top of the list of what to play for me.

Gotta be Deus Ex. The first time I played that (a year or so ago) it was essentially me creeping around the statue of liberty in the dark mashing the quicksave key, and getting very confused and full of bullets. I dropped it for a week or so, but came back for another go, this time completing the first mission but not in a very professional way (Contra-style). Third time though, I tried a stealthier and smarter approach and at that point the game just clicked for me, and I played it for the next week.
I'm kind of ashamed that I might have not have actually played this gem just because it gave me a bad first impression.

This event also convinced me to stick with games that are initially confusing and difficult (looking at you, 90's PC gaming), and now i'm a veteran of many old games I never knew existed in my childhood.

Also, Dwarf fortress. I'll be in my throne room of skulls and adamantine if you need me.

Karma has her 'ultimate' at lvl 1. She can store up to 2 charges of mantra I think it's called? She can use her ultimate before using an ability to increase its effect and add extra effects to it. Her q deals damage, and if you use her ult it also heals allies for example.

I know, I know. I was just making a joke. She's rarely played and more often than not is ignored completely. Hence the "who?" joke. :p

Knights of the Old Republic. To be fair, I had no idea if it was considered to be good, because I was about 11. First time I played it, I got maybe halfway through the Endar Spire before stopping because the combat was all that interesting. Picked it up a few months afterwards, played it through, and it's now one of my favourite games of all times, and introduced me to Bioware.

Guild Wars, had it for years but never really played it because I couldn't get past the entire instancing thing but I started again a few months back in anticipation for GW2 and I'm really enjoying it now.
