Braid uses music to the best effect. I particularly like the music in world 2, its so relaxing and just really sets the mood.

Vampire: The Masquarade had a very good soundtrack.

As did Fable 1 and 2.

Nearly every Bioware game to date has had excellent music.

The main menu of Baldurs Gate II never fails to excite me.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert music > Final Fantasy music

I always felt the Halo series strength lied in its musical score. I am also a big fan of pikmin's ambience, especially the Forest Navel stage.

Painkiller soundtrack.

not only is it all kickass rock/metal/techno music which is perfect for killing legions of undead, but it's all original music which was recorded for the game.

so boss

Mass Effect had an excellent minimalist score, reminiscent of the Matrix score (1st), which I still claim is one of the few film scores that can stand up against proper classical music in the same genre.

Bioshock's music was beautifully avant garde, and did things that no game score had ever done so effectively before.

So...those.

From a cut-scene, it would have to be Tales of Symphonia for the ending. That cue is just so epic. It makes me want to go out and buy an old Gamecube and a copy of this game just so that I can hear that again.

As for in-game, Bioshock's music was amazing, Halo's was very good, Call of Duty 4 in Chernoble was also good, Mass Effect comes to mind, Little Big Planet, Metroid Prime 2 for the title screen, SSX 3 had a great licensed soundtrack, the new Prince of Persia was good once the lands were healed, and that's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

Zelda would be on this list if Nintendo would just use some of its wads of cash to actually pay for a real orchestra to play their music! The Zelda theme is one the best in gaming, and it's squandered due to it being put together on MIDI files! Twilight Princess would have been 10x better if they had just gone out and gotten a real orchestra.

i'm unsure if it's been mentioned yet, but "B.A.T. II: the koshan conspiracy" had some amazing and moody music (for roland / adlib boards, no less).

i remember being completely transfixed on the music while playing, it (and the interesting in-game programming language on your wrist computer) kept me playing that game well beyond it's past-due date.

also two of troika's games ("TOEE" and "arcanum") had stunning soundtracks.

i'm sure its been mentioned a thousand times - "grim fandango".

The Legend of Zelda series is my favorite; Windwaker in particular. It's the last soundtrack I've really liked since the Spyro the Dragon series when I was seven.

for me my best in game music would have to be split between naruto and devil may cry
there all awsome
True, not sure if there is any difference between the western naruto games and the eastern ones in terms of music, but the Japanese versions (up to the last gamecube versions) were awesome, but I didn't like the Wii versions audio too much.

My pick would have to be Freedom Fighters.

Just Epic. Jesper Kyd is a beast.

A close 2nd being Soul Calibur.

Oh and an honourable mention would be Castlevania: Bloodlines. The Atlantis theme still fornicates my ears, ever so gently.
