DDO is a good choice. It's totally free, and has some of the best MMO mechanics I've seen in a while. Pretty damn fun.
As well as one of the most retard-saturated communities in cyberspace.
Meh, I don't really see much of that. I don't know if I'm lucky or what, but there just doesn't seem to be any of that around.

Another WoW invite: Oceanic server Khaz'Goroth has a number of Escapists on it, including smallharmlesskitten, varchld, myself, and the most Ultra of Joes. I'm Eirishkegal, SHK is Vargur, varchld is Variana, and Ultrajoe is, well, Ultrajoe. The guild is Knights Errand. SHK and I would be happy to show you around. There is also a WoW Usergroup, Azeroth Escapists.

WoW's community can vary radically from server to server and between Alliance and Horde, so it's good to get a referral if you can.

Maybe our definitions are different.

I just get very frustrated with people who don't know the slightest thing about the source material of an MMO. Especially when people are asking why clerics are wearing armour in Stormreach.

... /sigh.

I get frustrated with that too, but everyone in the areas I generally hang around seem to be knowledgeable enough, or at least act like it.

Try Dungeon Fighter. It's a fighting game much like Streets of Rage but in an MMO format. It's about to officially launch next week and it's free to play. the only thing you have to pay for is character customization. But even that's optional since people are willing to sell their custom appearance items (for a king's ransom) in the game.

The downside is the social aspect of the game. It's nearly non-existent as with most Korean MMOs.

I quite like AQWorlds. It's free unless you decide to upgrade, which while beneficial, is entirely optional.

It functions entirely on flash player on a browser. There are no downloads needed.

The community is reasonable, as long as you avoid some of the worse conversations that take place in yulgar (generally they are ok, but there are some really bad ones).

The major problem is probably the graphics, which are often off putting to a lot of players. They appear somewhat childish.

Still, it is updated weekly, it has a friendly programming team, and it can be free for as long as you need it to be.
That game is the grindiest grindy grind festival in the history of grinding.

But I like giving my character a ridiculous hair style and dressing like a barber to awe the peons.

Guild Wars, hands-down. I've tried almost every mainstream MMO in existence, and Guild Wars is the only one I could keep playing without growing increasingly frustrated with it or utterly bored.

The combat is a typical example of easy to learn but hard to master, it's great to solo with the help of heroes and henchmen and even better to play with a group. It's got a lot of grind for those who like that sort of thing, but 99% of it is purely optional for those who don't. The PvE campaigns are fairly interesting, and some of the missions are a lot of fun. It's got some of the best PvP of any MMO I've tried, and doesn't place a huge emphasis on character level and gear quality, unlike most MMOs.

posted this in another thread like 2 mins ago but it fits here too :

Try "Getting a Girlfriend and a Real Circle of Friends : Offline"

Great experience overall, the level grind is probably the slowest I've ever seen, but the graphics are so real its mind blowing.
Fully voiced dialogue and a choice system like no other make it impossible to not get immersed. There's also a class system that allows you to not get "stuck" with 1 single class, you can basically get any skill you want on one character, which makes up for the fact that you can only play one character and they only have the one realm.
The player base is the largest in the world though, lot's of people play this and plus there are no monthly fees. As for your system specs well you don't need to worry because you can play this no matter what type of computer you own!

Try it out and tell the other ppl here how you like it!

WoW. read the tips and the loading screens, and you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Eve Online.

Tons of fun, ultimate freedom, and many many careers to go on about. No grind either.

This game is great for some, and not for others though, so you'll either love it or hate it.

Alright, so I've been thinking about trying out an MMO. Any will do, as long as it's good. There are a few limitations though:
1.) It has to be Mac OS X 10.5 compatible. I'm not gonna buy a gaming computer when my MacBook works perfectly and I play most of my games on my Xbox.
2.) The community has to be good. I don't want to constantly be reminded that I'm a noob when I've already established that fact.
3.) This one isn't really necessary, but I'd like to have someone be able to guide me through at least the first few levels. Playing the World of Warcraft 10-day trial was a pain trying to wrap my mind around all these alien concepts. No one was willing to explain anything to me.
EDIT: 4.) I'd like a free trial before I start feeding the game my money.
Any suggestions?
If at all you decide to give WoW another try I'll gladly help you out on my realm...provided you're British of course.

I'd give the MUD avalon a shot, you may be a bit skeptical but i've been playing it for about a year so far and I've never played a online game standard MMO (wow/eve) or MUD like it.. since your on a mac you may want to grab mudlet from mudlet.org and connect to avalon-rpg.com:23

if you decide to PM me and I can walk you though some things
