Hmmm... interesting question, but the majority of my favourite films were made with little or no special effects / CGI so I'd have to say, top 3 would be

Any Monty Python, Pulp fiction, The God Father.

Come and See, they actually fired live 8MM Mauser rounds a few meters over the main characters head because they were cheaper than blanks. It had special effects, but they were all done using live rounds or explosives.

When you say 'No special effects' do you mean CGI or no special effects at all. Because if that was the case, half the movies listed are quite full with them. There are very few films out there with no special effects at all.

Optical effects, camera effects, makeup with rubber monsters and all that are all still Special Effects. Kind of narrows movies down to nil.

I like the modern CGI though. Sure, people can go nuts with it (Ie Micheal Bay) but it makes all those things we once couldn't do possible. I see nothing wrong with that. Opens new doors for wider story telling, imaginative designs and crations, amoung other things.

I don't have the right name its a mid 80s or early 90s sci fi cop thriller by the name of 9 seconds or minutes, London is flooded and a monster is on the loose.

I can't recall the name for the life of me....

Sounds like a pretty Special Effect heavy film.

I just saw "Princess bride" so i'm gonna go with that.
I knew someone would have said this. Just had to make sure, or the thread would have been lacking.

Beat me to what I was going to post. I do have one thing to add. It dates the movies horribly. I remember terminator 2 and how great the effects in it where. I recently saw it once again, and realized just how bad they actually where.

Sure, good CGI is a wonderful thing. But I'd rather have a spectacular story, with moderate CGI.
A lot of movies use CGI to cover up for the fact that the actual story is lacking, or just so awful its amazing that it ever made it into production to begin with.

But OT, Fantasia. Old style animation at its best.

Shine
Downfall
Paprika (but its animated, so...)
The Truman Show
Catch Me If You Can

There, I just listed my top five movies, and NONE of them have the Special FX problem.

The only special effect was a guy in a suit and he had little screen time, this was before CGI and DVD took off, basically it had as much less special effects as the first 2 Freddy or Jason films.

He was chasing the monster that left a trail of bodies...he had a bad coffee habit and a green rookie that eventually took over from him once he died killing the monster.

I want to say 9 and a half seconds but that's not pulling the film up.

Quit your trolling bro, we don't do that here (as much).

My favourite movie with no special effects is Primer. I'm pretty sure it was made with only about $7000.
