In Doctor Faustus, Faustus does a paragraph long ritual spell to summon Mephistopheles (agent of Lucifer) to him. When Mephistopheles arrives, rather than being amazed by the fact that he actually just summoned a demon, Faustus says:

"I charge thee to return and change thy shape. Thou art too ugly to attend on me;"

Bitchy. As. Fuck. I love it, and no matter what he did I couldn't hate the character after the fact. It summarises his personality perfectly.

?All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little?"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET?Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point?"

MY POINT EXACTLY.?
― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

I have to work in a field where the appearance of law to some is that it is an absolute, an independent variable, to be followed to the letter, without question. I use this as an anchor for myself to remind myself that law is not divine, but human. And because it is human, it is flawed. That flaw does not make it worthless, but it means that I have to work with others to improve it and to change it with the times.

EDIT: Found another one.

Over the centuries, mankind has tried many ways of combating the forces of evil... prayer, fasting, good works and so on. Up until Doom, no one seemed to have thought about the double-barrel shotgun. Eat leaden death, demon.
-Terry Pratchett

from Snowcrash

"As part of Mr. Lee's good neighbor policy, all Rat Things are programmed never to break the sound barrier in a populated area. But Fido's in too much of a hurry to worry about the good neighbor policy.
fuck the sound barrier. Bring the noise."

Yeah Perfect!!!!
In keeping with the spirit of great Keanu quotes. xD

I loved this part in the film. Hell I loved the entire thing, but I did love this total breakdown. People always joke about him being wooden, and having no emotional range, and then I think of this movie.

He's great in that movie, and the film itself is excellent

There always was one quote that's stood out to me, the quote I live my life by, from the great mind of Taokaka:
"Madness or Genius? the only difference is success!"

Also just about every damn thing Jaya Ballard, Task Mage says. Some of my personal favorites:
"Some have said there is no subtlety to destruction. You know what? They're dead."

"Who needs the sun when you've got me around?"

"Of course you should fight fire with fire. You should fight everything with fire."

oh, and finally, Pyrrhon. I goddamn love Pyrrhon, he's like if the Tick and the Human Torch put on the Potara earrings.

"Pyrron has a delivery, and the return address is JUSTICE!"

I have never read this book, but the quote really inspires me to make delicious meals.
I usually have napkins with this on them when I'm hosting a dinner.

What is Pyrron, or Pyrrhon from? I admit I am intrigued by a Tick/Human Torch mashup character. I love the Tick and think I would gleefully enjoy Pyrron if he's as over the top as him.

"Everyone has a plan til they get punched in the mouth" - Mike Tyson

It's true. Punching someone in the mouth is like a human reset button.

"Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness." - Oprah Winfrey

Like this one because for a long time, even now, I find myself afraid of not getting everything perfect. The slightest mistake makes me hate myself. This reminds me: those aren't world ending mistakes, they're learning experiences.

"Whatever women do, they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult." - Charlotte Whitton

Love this quote because as a woman I've actually seen/watched it happen - both to me and to my friends.

?I have no objection to anyone?s sex life as long as they don?t practice it in the street and frighten the horses.?
― Oscar Wilde

Reflects my views on sex perfectly. I don't care. I just don't. Just don't do it in public, don't do it to someone without their permission and we're good.

I have one from Ratchet and Clank A Crack in Time
"The Clock, much like time itself, is a gift ? and not to be tampered with... But, like any father, my only wish is that my son does that which makes him feel whole. You are an intelligent and logical being, Clank, but intelligence and logic would have been wasted gifts without honor and loyalty; I am proud to see that you came into those on your own. So, should the Clock be too small for your plans, I pray the cosmos light the way toward a future you yourself design ? and remember, the universe has a wonderful sense of humor; the trick is learning how to take a joke!"

"I have seen so many young men over the years who thought they were running at their enemies.
They were not. They were running at me." ~ Death, The Book Thief

Sent chills down my spine when I read that.

I'll add another Terry Pratchett quote. My favorite is at the end of 'Small Gods':

HE WAS A MURDERER, said Death. AND A CREATOR OF MURDERERS. A TORTURER. WITHOUT PASSION. CRUEL. CALLOUS. COMPASSIONLESS.

?Yes. I know. He's Vorbis,? said Brutha. Vorbis changed people. Sometimes he changed them into dead people. But he always changed them. That was his triumph.

He sighed.

?But I'm me,? he said.

Now I think I'll go and reread that one. It's been a while.
