Square Enix and Blizzard (espeically when Diablo 3 comes out). I would say Bioware and Bethesda but those 2, at least to me, lacked the wow factor.

Troika RIP :(

I'm not sure I'd put Bethesda anywhere even in my top 5 to be honest. Now if this were best rpg world builders however, they might nab the top spot.
who's troika. And Bethesda is so awesome. Why don't you like them.
Don't misunderstand me, I DO like them I just don't think they make all that great of games. I haven't been very excited about anything they've done post Morrowind. Oblivion and Fallout just feel very "stale" to me, with robot like npcs and stilted dialogue. Mind you, they are nearly peerless when it comes to world crafting. Despite how I may feel about the total fallout 3 experience the world they crafted is so, SO good and detailed. It's astounding really.

As for Troika?

Troika Games was a computer game developer created by the key people behind the first of the critically acclaimed Fallout series of games. The company was focused on computer role-playing games between 1998 and 2005 for personal computer. It is best known for Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and Vampire: The Masquerade ? Bloodlines.
Of note, they are also responsible for what I consider to be the greatest implementations of strategic tabletop DnD ever with "Temple of Elemental Evil". But yea, they did fallout so much of what you probably like about Fallout 3, "these guys made". Sadly they were deemed to awesome for this world and were shut down.

it really is just too hard to pick just one

each company really excels in certain areas

best world building and mod 'ability' goes to bethesda hands down

best story/dialogue/characters goes to bioware for sure

obsidian is pretty good at being a hybrid of them, minus all the shitty ass bugs they have.

*dont know too many other developers off the top of my head*

Different developers are better at different things. Bioware for moral choices, Bethesda for exploration.

Atlus has never failed me though, the games they publish always seem to be brilliant in most aspects. The developer I'm most familiar with there is Software so i'll just say them ;D

Bioware by a long shot. Not even a contest IMO. Bethesda would be second, though a distant second.

Bioware is probably the best developer of all time in my book, with Blizzard not far behind. Neither have really made a bad game in their history, IMO.

Hmm. Iv heard of that vampire game i might check it out. "Deemed too awesome" seems to happen allot doesn't it like say system shock and Black isle. Personally i love Bethesda allot and would probably kill someone if the elder scrolls 5 got canceled.

For me it's Bioware vs Bethesda... Bioware has more focused stories, social aspects and direct moral choices while Bethesda generally has huge open worlds (and therefore stories, more focus on the whole world rather than a single main narrative), little to no social aspects (usually setting you as a loner in a huge world, with perhaps another companion that's usually not that awesomely developed in comparison to Bioware's characters) and the moral choices are mostly nonexistent, though can be virtually made by choosing to do or not do certain quests.

The main character development is also a bit different, Bioware let's you develop your character through interaction with other characters (as in, party members) while Bethesda, again, sets you as a loner and let's you fill in all the blanks yourself through a mix of your own imagination and the actions (quests) you do or don't do.

Just a note, in Bioware's case I'm talking mostly about DA:O, ME2 and KOTOR 1&2 while in Bethesda's case I'm talking about their Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3, with their respective expansion packs and DLCs included.

I can never choose between Bioware and Blizzard in these discussions... In my heart I love them both.

Bethesda and Bioware are the best, in terms of RPG's - Blizzard sucks. Diablo is more about fighting mass amounts of critters to get to the next boss or waypoint (nothing much of an RPG) and WOW is all about the grinds. There is no particular 'character development' (A stat screen isn't character development, it's about numbers, a character isn't solely based on numbers - this is Blizzards flaw)
