Best Series of games.

Well, the only series that I actually own is the Assassin's Creed series, so I suppose they win by default. I would argue that they just keep improving, but I preferred Assassin's Creed II to Brotherhood. Although I do enjoy the multiplayer from Brotherhood.

I used to have most of the games in the Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero series, but I'm not going to try and argue them as the best series ever, considering that they both took a huge dive in quality towards the end. Also had a lot of Smackdown vs. Raw games, but again, wouldn't argue them as the greatest game series.

I own most Lego games, do they count as a series? If so, then I may nominate them, as they are really fun and they do keep me entertained for quite some time.

Upon reflection, none of these are amazing, but I can't actually think of a series that I consider to be the best ever.

Definitely Half life. The second game continues to be the best game of all time (imo of course..) and the episodes that followed were of the same quality. You can imagine me, along with half this site, are eagerly awaiting the return of everyone's favorite mute physicist.

With each installment, the series improve.
I hope that some day Sid Meier and the rest at Firaxis, will team up with Creative Assembly, to create the greatest strategy/wargame of all times.

Atlus consistently delivers.

If they ever get around to making a current-gen Persona title, it might actually replace Baldur's Gate 2 as my favorite game of all time.

Out of the series I can think of I'd say the following:

Halo: Been with that franchise since combat evolved and still come online with my friends to play Reach at least once a week. I've felt each game improved on the last and as far as multiplayer goes is very hard to beat. I also enjoy it's differences to many shooters out there (i.e. modern war games and colours), it's deep universe and the insane amount of support bungie gives it. Heres hoping a Bungieless Halo series can survive.

GTA: as the OP points out it's been a wonderful series and graced us with some of gamings most realised worlds (GTA 4 I feel wins my award of best game world just for it's vibe and feel, like an actual city)and also one of the few series in games to pick up on interesting subject matters such as playing an immigrant new to America. I don't see any other game trying that soon.

Mass Effect: Yes only two games deep but as far as 'new' series are concerned I can't even begin to spew enough superlatives about the story, characters and universe. I will be happy when I can finish the story of Commander shepard in Mass Effect 3 comes out, though I don't know how the series will fair in the future with new stories.

I would like to also point out Assassins Creed is nearing my list of great series, we shall see with the new revelations title

Strange I suppose that I had no mention of Zelda, Mario, Metroid. Fact is, I never rated them as high as others did and didn't see the massive appeal. I got they were good games, but I felt the fanatical devotion to them was put on them too easily. Also, Final Fantasy would have featured but 10,12 and 13 ruined any good will I had with that series.

Both series have been consistantly awesome.

I quite enjoy the Fable games for the customizability you have at your finger tips. However, I was quite disappointed with Fable III. I thought it was rushed and limited, and quite unoriginal. The Road to Rule was stupid, as well as game breaking by the fact that you coud ignore a power up and just get the next one after the next gate opened.

I'd say the entire Fallout series has been amazing with the exception of Brotherhood of Steel... Egh. (Not the Tactics one, the other one)

The Mother Series. Followed closely by Paper Mario. Both are extremely well done, and strike emotions in me such that a single release of either would validate the purchase of the system required to play it.

Paper Mario excluding the most recent one. The rpg elements and comedy are easy to grasp and hard to let go of.

Total War

It's a smooth blend of TBS and RTS that I just happen to be very good at.
It's always had issues but it seems like in Shogun II they finally managed to sort them all out without adding more.

Toss up between Half life and Metal Gear/Metal Gear Solid. I've replayed those games more times than I can remember.

I'm not going to win any originality points for saying this.

My choice is the Mario main line (not including any of the spin offs.)

Up until Super Mario Galaxy 2 (which was really more of an expansion pack) each and every Mario game has been hugely innovative. Each game introduced new and wondrous elements while still keeping the feel of the series intact. Your Call of Dutys and your Gears of Wars may be content to wallow in repetition, but Mario will hopefully never stop pushing the envelope.

i gotta go with mario, zelda, and metroid. nintendo is the only company i know that can package the same characters/world/story over and over and still make it fun. well maybe i should say shigeru miyamoto haha

IMO, Metroid. With the exception of That Metroid Game Not To Be Mentioned For Fear Of Starting Another Flame War. Oh, and that one for the DS.
