Best stand-alone game this generation?

Well we cant make this decision until the end of this generation. Some big hitters coming out later this year like Skyrim.

So far, Oblivion or Fallout: New Vegas are fantastic games.

Heavy Rain deserves mention, a very cool experience.

Civ V was good.

Starcraft II was apparently good.

Minecraft as well, amazing game.

would say deus ex, but that's the second game in the series (and one hell of a prequel to the original. cant wait to see where they go but i digress)

Deus Ex HR is the third game in the series. You missed out the lacklustre Invisible war.

It's amazing how many people have put games that are sequels or have sequels in this thread and I am assuming we are talking about the generation as in Xbox360, PS3 and Wii? Seeing alot of PS2 titles in here.

OT: Heavy Rain, Bayonetta and Vanquish have already been said but those are the only notable ones that come to mind.

yeah, i know, i was making a little joke there since pretty much everyone kinda severely dislikes the invisible war.

Stupid topic, IMO. Why limit yourself to just games that don't have sequels? Most of my favorite games like Burnout 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect 2, Prince of Persia: SoT, Half-life 1 + 2, Dead Space 2, inFAMOUS, God of War, Red Faction, etc have or are sequels (regardless of gen). If a game is good, isn't it pretty much guaranteed to have a sequel?

If I had to pick a standalone game, I'd say either Enslaved, Alan Wake (is getting a XBLA sequel), Metro 2033 (sequel soon), Batman : AA (sequel soon), Prince of Persia 2008 (shut up, it doesn't have a sequel and is unrelated to rest of series), Mirror's Edge (probably be a sequel sometime), SoTC (I doubt it counts as this gen)... Darksiders? Oh wait, that's getting a sequel.

If you don't take into account that fallout 3 raped the canon of the series and ignore the story entirely, it was decent.

Angry Birds - It's genuinely fun in a casual way and almost universally loved by most age groups.

There was a flash game that came out years before Angry Birds that was the EXACT same thing called Crush the Castle. But then again this kind of thing happens to flash game all the time.

I've heard that as well, but to my understanding Angry Birds is still a stand-alone product. Even if it is a facelift from a prior title I've not played.

Also, if it is as identical as people claim, have the makers of Crush the Castle sued Angry Birds yet? I mean there would be a ton of money to make there.

See, the problem is that a guy who made a flash game for something like "freegame.com" he doesn't make a copyright because he made that game for free a couple years before smartphones were the norm. He can't sue. He just gets to watch some company make millions off of his idea because he wasn't in some indie company that could afford to put a game on smartphones.
