I recommend X-Com... which is kind of sad when a DOS game is beating out any modern examples I can think of.

Yep, it's a damn shame but turn based gameplay went out of vogue a long time ago, these days you only see it on the odd strategy game. A real shame because I think it died before we really got to explore it's full possibilities; in fact I would say that xcom was the first and only child of a new genre, which is ironic when you consider how great it is... Just goes to show, the "money men" have been fucking up gaming for a long time now.

HOW HAS NO ONE MENTIONED POKEMON YET?

Edit: Alright, ONE person has mentioned Pokemon... Also, Paper Mario and Mario And Luigi (Superstar Saga, Bowser's Inside Story, etc.) are all great.

Edit 2: Electric Boogaloo: Also, Civilization V

Jagged Alliance 2. I'd say X-com as up there, but I don't think it counts as a crpg. But any list would need to at least consider JA2.

..wasn't Heroes of Might and Magic mentioned, or did I just miss it?
Also, Age of Wonders. How could you forget.
