Don't get me wrong, I liked it and all, but no matter how many times you watch it in order to 'grasp' the story, you'll eventually come upon the point that there just isn't one... it's just a hodgepodge of quirky situations with zero message to them, beyond the idea that Johnny Depp shirked his duty as a journalist to get really high and survive a crazy Mexican dude.
It's much clearer in the book but Fear and Loathing did have a message, it's that the American Dream is a lie and that the hippie movement was dead. Also he didn't shirk his duty as a journalist, since his duty was to report the truth and that's just what he did.
~and the toaster in the bath scene was a take on cold war politics?
No that was just a day in the life of Hunter S Thompson.

Oh, come on. You can't fault an autobiographical movie for it's lack of a plot. It's the story of what happened when Doc Thompson went to Vegas to report on a race. How is it supposed to have a plot? I like it because it's practically the early seventies told in two hours and between all the wacky shenanigans Thompson and Acosta got into there are some really smart observations on the culture back then.

What was the title of the thread again?

Point taken.

So, great looking movies with lackluster stories, right? There's this movie called Vidocq. It's a little something like a french version of Guy Ritchies Sherlock Holmes. It's set in a beautiful steampunky version of 1830 Paris but while it's visually really impressive the story is a rather boring murder mystery.

In my (pretentious} opinion, they are both fantastic films.
Ditto on The Fall. That movie was pure scenery porn, and my eyes enjoyed every minute of it. Best of all: It was all shot on location.

Hero - 2002 Movie featuring Jet Li and Maggie Cheung. Movie was very successful in Asia before US studios sat on it for a couple of years until it got a "presented by Quentin Tarantino" credit even though he had fuck all to do with the film.

Anyway, it is a beautiful film. You could take almost any screenshot during the movie and you'd want to frame it and hang it on your wall. Story? what story?

That live action film to the manga/ anime Casshern.
That film was a clear case of style over substance since the visual were great but not so much with the story. I mean seriously they make that battle with Casshern against one of the generals offscreen!! I wanted to know what the battle was like.
Make scene the style was the top piroty as it was directed by Kazuaki Kiriya so also did many of Utada music videos which are well know for being a visual treat for the eyes.
wait
Casshern: Sins or the original Casshern >.> very different animals

Probably 300 or Suckerpunch.
Both looked fantastic. Both were fairly mediocre in the story department.
Suckerpunch....I have to agree on. The story....it felt like too little was....I dunno it felt like it was trying to be "complex" without achieving anything interesting.

The classic Casshern since Sin was made after the live action film.

Avatar had rather simplistic story, but at least it didn't have the kind or retarded plot holes some other movies got. So for Hollywood standards it was actually all that bad.

I nominate Redline, a 2 hour anime movie by Madhouse.

The story was generic, but who the hell needs story when you've got The Wacky Races meets F-Zero on steroids? Hell, it took them 7 years to animate the damn thing. High energy and lots of imagination from start to end, and dat visual flare.

Oh, I'm watching it again soon.

Someone's already mentioned Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. Which looked beautiful, but wasn't much if you sat down and read a novelisation.

I'd have to go with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Having never played FF VII or any other game in the series I had not a single clue what was going on that entire film, and it made no attempt to explain a damn thing. Looked nice though.

i know its already been said a few times but Avatar. It looked very nice but is one of the worst films ive ever seen, and thats only because of how overated it is, the storys okay (bad at times) and i never did feel bored while watching it but its how overated it is that makes me dispise it.

In what strange, horrifying world does The Fall have a poor story? I keep hearing this, but I just can't figure out how anyone is getting that. I do not understand this logic. I suppose that if one remains too focused on the story within the story that you might lose track of what's actually happening. However, that doesn't change the fact that it isn't a cliche fantasy tale. It's the story of a broken, hopeless man deceiving a young, innocent girl into helping him kill himself by telling her a fantastical story, which is cliche and over the top because this is what a stunt guy in the hospital is making up on the spot. And then in the end where things get so incredibly dark and bleak because he just can't pull himself out of his crippling despair.

I just...this movie is far more than just pretty pictures. I have a problem when anyone suggests otherwise.

In the event that you were just posting an amazing looking film, then I apologize for my short diatribe.

I want to put Howl's Moving Castle, it was colorful and while the story is sorta meh, it is still very addicting to watch.

Also what about Fern Gulley? The story is pretty standard but the animation was pretty and colorful for being in a rainforest.
