Then I'm a risk-averse pansy and proud of it! :p

OT:
Personally, I do love sniping weapons. With the addition of the GRA, I like getting a silenced Anti-Matter Rifle.

My personal fave weapon of the game? The Pulse Gun. It may use 5 cells per shot (clip of 25), but it can pretty much kill off most robotic beings and even power-armoured troops if you go against the Brotherhood within a couple of shots (depending on difficulty settings and your skill with energy weapons). Plus, ammo is pretty easy to get hold of and it means you never have to lug loads of pulse mines/grenades around.

You get it under one of the vaults... I forget which but it's near Lake Mead, just north of Cannibal Johnson's cave. It's full of radiation, has a bunch of geckos outside it and tonnes of ghouls inside (oh what I wouldn't give for a ghoul mask in this game :p). It's in a Very Hard locked footlocker in the armoury. It might sound difficult to get to and whatnot, but the armoury also contains a tonne of other weapons of all kinds (this being the only energy weapon in the room), including the unique assault rifle, the All-American.

Ah, that would be Vault 34. And a quicker/easier way of getting the Pulse Gun is to take a trip to Nellis AFB first - the key to that VH locked chest can be found in Pearl's barracks.

Depends on what you like, there's not really any best (in a way that makes a difference). Personally, I found a silenced sniper to be ridiculously overpowered for a stealth-based character.

I decided to take a break from attempting to complete the game and find some good weapons. Any suggestions?
Brush Gun.

Any other answer is demonstrably wrong.

Grr! Have honor! You should face your enemy like a man!

(I may or may have not uttered the above statement after being sniped a few times in TF2. Frakkin' snipers).

I do face my enemies like a man! It's just that they happen to be 400m away and have no idea I'm there...I still don't like to shoot them in the back. I'll make exceptions for the Legion and Deathclaws though, fuck those guys.

I can only really recommend guns for variety and availability of ammo, which has led me to largely stick to them, but there are a few others.

Guns in the base game
12.7mm SMG is good for close in, as is the riot shotgun; really any SMG or 12 gauge shotgun is capable of dishing out pretty obscene amount of damage in close, only that shotguns (besides the riot) are better against slow enemies (which there aren't many in New Vegas) or individual enemies.
As for longer ranges, the light machinegun can't really be bested for all-round performance; its just annoyingly rare... The heavier repeaters i.e. the brush gun are also pretty useful.

For really long range, the brush gun (so long as you have a decent-sized screen/the target is huge, the AMR (because really, when isn't a .50 cal useful (except against really small/weak targets)), the sniper rifle or the hunting rifle (once scoped; fully upgraded, I actually prefer this as the larger capacity is handy and the time between shots makes me more trigger-disciplined).

To be honest, I've found the light machinegun is pretty much effective against everything, so long as you make a point of always buying 5.56mm ammo and hoarding all you find from early on.

Non-guns in the base game
As for non-guns, I'd personally stick with energy weapons; the gauss rifle is useful against everything except in close quarters; I personally found that a Gauss rifle (preferably the YCS/186, personally > alien blaster due to long-term advantage of ammo). I keep a Laser RCW for close-up/ weak enemies, sometimes a plasma rifle if the close-up will be with harder foes.
Melee and unarmed are still largely redundant in my eyes because guns kill at a safe distance whereas going toe-to-toe with a deathclaw or cazador usually ends in heavy stimpack usage. Explosives are also a no no for me; largely a liability in doors and ammo just isn't common enough.

As for DLC
Only weapon from Dead Money I'd advise is the holorifle; fully upgraded its an awesome multi-purpose weapon, save the crap reload time.

Honest Hearts; .45 pistol is a decent choice, but I'd recommend the SMG for its capacity, damage and ROF.
Survivalist's rifle is just epic. Best all-round weapon in my books, save its capacity. I prefer it over even the LMG because the ammount of ammo needed is less and I find I am more accurate with it.

Old World Blues; Elijah's Tesla cannon is very, very useful if you have the ammo. Wasn't that enamoured by the other weapons.

In Lonesome road, the SMMG and Red Glare are definitely awesome; the SMMG is devastating, especially up close and Red Glare is the only explosives weapon I like. And I like it a lot.

Gun Runner's Stuff is all pretty awesome.

Well it's a good thing I don't play TF2, nor that Fallout is an MMO (in which case, I would probably not be playing it anyway as I don't care much for MMO shooters like TF2, Call of Duty, etc)

As for facing my enemies "like a man"... to hell with that... that's an easy way to get killed. Pick them off from a distance and you're a lot more likely to survive a war.

Oh really? Huh... I never knew that. I've always been a fan of lockpicking, so by the time I fight my way there, it's always one of the first stats I've maxed out.

That's fair enough. I've always been a fan of hacking and so have had to find alternative ways to get around locks with no bypass terminal.
