I clicked the thread really fast prepared to defend the Squall/Rinoa love story, but to my surprise there isn't much hate specifically directed to FFVIII. Well that has to be my pick for best one, it was a while since I played FFVIII but it still touched me.

The worst one by far has to be the unnamed apprentice and Juno Eclipse in The Force Unleashed. At least when played on the Wii this one is so awful it makes you smash your head against the wall. Apart from the obvious fact that they are a main male character and a female support character in the same age on the same mission there is nothing whatsoever to spark romance between them until they kiss in the last level. They just fall in love, with barley any lines of dialog and no real interaction between them apart from the very basic.

My favortie is probly be Revan and whoever you liked from KoToR.

The worst would have to be any in final fantasy I have only played a few of them but they are all terrible.
I was pretty disappointed that Mission Vao wasn't a Love interest. She was one of the characters I liked best.
I'm pretty sure Mission was underage, mate.

Best would be Revan and Bastila in KotOR, quite deep.

Mario and the Princess, Been saving her ass since Donkey Kong.
That wasn't Princess Peach in Donkey Kong. That was Mario's girlfriend-at-the-time Pauline. Technically Mario's been saving the Princess since Super Mario Bros.
This reminds me of something: http://www.digitalunrestcomic.com/index.php?date=2008-09-17

Best love story?

Fable II. It was just so romantical how i made a random woman fall in love with me, only to move in a toolshed-like house and have a baby. After that i brought a few villagers over and got them drunk, the party was wild. Of course i killed them all later.
Brings tears in my eyes every time i speak of this.

Shadow of the Colossus. The main character's girlfriend dies and he travels across the world, slays like 15 colossi, and absorbs the power of a dark god just to bring her back.

The best would be the one in PoP: SoT

"FARAH, COME BACK!"

The worst would be when my characters in The Sims accidently gets homo and ruin thier marriage.

Solid Snake and Meryl Silverburgh.

REASON: It's optional in MGS1. You can either let the ***** die in the end or not.

usually having 3 stories going at once doesnt work - jenny, paulie and the darkness but the game pulls it off!
I consider Jenny to be part of the Paulie story. Considering what he does to her and how little time she spends in our company.

But it's an excellent game none the less!

Best: Revan & Garth - KOTOR & MC & DawnStar - Jade Empire
Worst: Fable2's protagonist & Wife (because mine kept kicking her ass... damn wife beater)
no seriously, worst in-game is anything from DMC because Dante loves himself more than all those girls (plus the one in the 1st DMC looks just like his mom; Oedipus much?)

As for worst...as mentioned above, ANY so-called "romance" in Fable 2 qualifies. And the dating system in GTA IV and San Andreas are about as bad.
And the implied romance between Jak and Ashelin in Jak III was either ill-advised or plain WTF, depending on how you look at it...both were going steady with others in the previous game, and again with the same persons in Jak X. Not good continuity.
agree with you on all points, although I wouldn't count those in GTA as "relationships", they were simply an annoying attempt to lengthen game-play.

the jak 3 relationship fuck-up was one of the weirdest things I've seen in game stories. it literally made no sense, other than the fact they'd clearly lost the voice-actress for keira, but why would that matter? i can't believe the writers even attempted it. never played on jak X as jak 3 IS the last game in the series, but i wouldn't be surprised if they attempted to patch that whole mess up.

rather than just stating my personal opinion, i'm gonna leave a reason why i think either which way.

mario and peach.
oh god, right? it's so old and the love between the two is as empty as a morbidly obese child's spider-man lunch box after breakfast. this is exactly why they're the perfect celebrity couple of gaming. let's look at the facts; they're the most popular gaming characters in gaming history (well, mario is for any matter, peach is more like paris hilton). not only that, THEY HAVE MARIGE PROBLEMS, HUGE ONES. every time mario rescues peach, (which you can blame nintendo for being to lazy to come up with a new plot line), she give's mario the same blatant ungreatful reaction. imagine your mother making a special diner for you every saturday night just because she wants you to know she cares, but she give's it to you on the same unwashed plate every single time, oh gee whiz thanks, i can almost taste the cole slaw left over from 3 weeks ago.

every final fantasy love story can go straight to hell. none of those plot lines involve the fantasy of my dreams, what a misleading title, i know i shouldn't of wasted that 40$, i guess that makes me a rEEEEtard.

Nero and Kiryia (someone spell check that)
i agree with anyone who finds any relationship in Devil May Cry a bit of joke, but i have to give credit to DMC4. while the game was easy, repetitive, and the same old song and dance to you my friend, i personally liked the story line (and the girls). it follows the same line with mario where the princess the stolen away buy someone who weighs over ten tons and shoots doom lasers out of their mouths. but the main diference here is they ACTUALLY HAVE SOME SORT OF HUMAN EMOTION FOR EACH OTHER. i have a theory that mario secretly hires bowser to kidnap peach so he can use that as an excuse to go on a murderous killing rampage, he can cares less about the stuck up *****. Nero instead unleashes some power thing (no doubt it's over 9000 in some unit of measure, har har har) in rage upon seeing his girlfriend used like bait, talk about devotion, right? also, she's hot, everyone in DMC4 is hot; trish, the chick from DMC3 who's name escapes me (in the DMC4 cutscenes, she looks like she's trying to get someone to rape her) gloria, who's actually trish in disguise, and she also is doing everything in her power to get someone to rape her.

lastly, the funniest love story-in Marvel:Ultimate Alliance, Weasel, the sterotypical super geek, keeps staring at one of the valkaries in Vahalla. one of the things you can do as the player is tell the valkarie that he really likes her...hilarious. and lest we forget when deadpool was talking to Black Widow.

widow- "deadpool, what a surprise"
deadpool- "Black Widow! how good to see you!"
widow- "likewise"
deadpool- "hey, i've always been meaning to ask you something...ARE THOSE REAL?!?!"
widow- "i beg you pardon?!?!"
deadpool- "i mean, your teeth! they're just clean and shiny"

classic. terribly sorry for typing so much.

Sorry, but IRL a Squall/Rinoa would not last. I give them 3 months, tops.

I usually don't get character heavy games so one of the few and best I've experienced would be the new Prince and Elika. *prepares Flame proof armour*
I was going to say the same thing!

At least it wasn't all "Oh prince, save me!", "Here I am, Elika, your handsome hero", "Oh thank you prince...how can I ever repay you?" (etc.)

While there were elements of flirtation, it wasn't overdone or too cheesy, and it never got in the way of the action.

Well by the same reasoning, I was underage when I first played KoTOR too.
And the "underage" thing largely depends on what country you're in.

Although, as I've stated before, younger-older relationships have been depicted quite well in a lot of movies, books and whatever other medium there is for stories to be told through.

Still wish there would've been a love story sub-plot with her.

WHY, oh WHY have no one mentioned Baldur's Gate II?!

That game had the most excellent Love story subplots in any game to date. And the game was just EPIC WIN overall as well.
Seriously, play it. Now.
I wuv you.

Baldur's Gate is my favourite game series by far, hands down. I still play them all.
And, yes, BG2 has amazing love stories (And amazing stories over-all). Both the Aerie and Jaheira love stries are so so well done, even when they are fighting over you. Rather, especially when they are fighting over you.

It's such an amazing game.
It's such an amazing series.
*sigh*
I'ma go play now.
The only thing I can think of that actually bothered me a little about BG2 is that only the first line in a dialogue had voice acting, the rest was just text. I really though that was a shame when the dialogue and the voice actors were so amazing.
BG2 truly is the best Roleplaying game ever.

Also, I've heard rumors about a BG3...

Gwendolyn and Oswald, and Cornelius and Velvet, both pairs from Odin Sphere

I'd also like to make an honorable mention to Tales of Symphonia, for giving you the option of who Lloyd can take as a love interest. I always chose Sheena though, cause Colette could die in a fire for all I cared, and because Sheena is awesome
