I want to see how they would implement jobs and classes, like Mercs, Slavers, Raiders, Traders and others. I'm going to reserve my judgement until I see some solid information regarding gameplay.
There's always been a lot of talk about how Bethesda would approach an MMO based on The Elder Scrolls series. Given the amount of freedom in the games, how can you give each character that same amount of freedom in an MMO?
I didn't even think about how they would/could implement a class such as a slaver. That would be very interesting; you're playing a bad guy, rounding up some generic NPCs and a good guy (assuming a PvP server) sees this and comes by to try and stop you.
I think Bethesda could pull it off - but I would hope they put a lot of development and testing into it first. I would hate to see Bethesda have such awesome ideas and concepts, but for the servers/bugs to make the game horribly fail.
I can imagine the massive amount of land they would have. Given the number of vaults around DC alone, there could be hundreds across the country (I'm not up on the Fallout lore) - that could be the player starting location. If they work it right, those players in different areas won't see each other for a long time (sort of like starting a new character of a different class in WoW - yes, I know that's not a LONG time, but you're in a different area at least).
Let's face it though - what would people do in a post-apocalyptic wasteland? Or should I say some people, since some will always be raiders etc - People will group together and rebuild. When the people from different vaults come together and start hanging out in cities, it will still feel realistic. To deny that they would ever do that is kind of silly. It would only be a matter of time.
I think we're also all speculating this would be a "Massive" online game the likes of WoW or something; like you said, if they were really wanting to limit the players, they could have servers with only 50 people on them - sort of like how Diablo II limited players getting together. Your character is stored on the server, you just join into a "game" with your character. Seems like that would break immersion if they have world changing events and housing though.
The thing I would miss the most is mods - but perhaps if they're running it with a monthly fee, Bethesda would crank out extra content.
