Yeah, it's a problem, but it's actually not the worst one (in regards to being an insult to 'art'.

I find the worst problem to be the sheer volume of utter crap, specifically recolours of wolves, drawings of anime pairings, and furry garbage.

It's abhorrent.


That said, deviantART hasn't been good in YEARS, if it was ever really that good to begin with.

I'm on dA and I know the pain of working on something original only to have boobs and fan art get all the views, favorites, and comments. This wasn't once so, but then the internet rolled in.

The problem really has more to do with lurkers on the site: most people favoriting things these days, (I've been on there since 05), don't have a gallery or even a journal posted. They just favorite things and contribute nothing else, no critiques, no art, nothing. 95% of it's porn/artistic nudes (dA allows things that I wouldn't, but they do have a list of things they don't don't let fly. Unfortunately things are not well managed and I even know of a group that specifically favorites the things dA won't take down that is against its own rules).

What is popular is generally crap. Unless you are the freaking art master and lucky you will never get your stuff seen. Just draw My Little Pony fanart, throw a boob in there, and let the adoration wash over you.

Favorite boobs and stray vulva, pretend like it's not hurting anyone.

1: Men are genetically programmed to like looking at them. Subconsciously it's how we choose a suitable partner to pass on genes, bla-bla-bla, and consciously most of us just like starin' at em.

2: They look nice. Same reason anyone looks at anything regularly.

I was confused about 2 minutes in, waited a bit, and suddenly things got weird. You know, I think this is my first real time actually understanding why people really dislike hipsters and actually seeing what one is. My God that was terrible, not even worth laughing.

OT: I don't really know what you're talking about. Yeah there are boobs, but they don't really get that much attention ESPECIALLY the camwhores. I remember my first few days on the site, I went on for pages, found some more hidden stuff, like what you're describing. Barely anyone actually commented or actually favorited these picks. Then again, the same could be said for the actual original art. It's mainly fanart that gets the attention. Fanfiction is barely popular, but there is plenty of it.

To be honest, the whole site isn't really that great. I've been there for awhile and I don't really favorite as much as I use to when I first started using the site. Most of what I favorited consisted of fanart and a couple of original things, mainly in the sci-fi genre. People don't really critique and review stuff because they either aren't qualified to analyze someone's creation or simply don't care enough to actually do so. Maybe if they actually encourage critiquing and allowed all comments to be posted in the form of a critique, without having to get a premium account, more people would actually be pressured to consider the true quality of the post.

Popular always seems to be flooded with fanart, shit memes that have been done a million times (like ?grab my X?), my little pony, soft core porn, female characters (often from kids show for some odd reason) spontaneously getting fat which I assume some weird fetish, cartoony wolves with highlighter coloured fur and photos of peoples cats. Hell for a while baldy drawn pictures of girls from video games and animes tied up, gagged and sometimes even crying kept appearing in popular (not so much now, thankfully) which confuses me. Yay for rape fantasies?
There are allot of very talented artist on deviant art and its good for following but you do have to wade thru a ton of crap. I only went to the fourms once and have no desire to go back.

Oddly enough, even though the only animes I like are the original Full Metal Alchemist, Dragonball Z ABRIDGED, and, if it counts, Avatar: The Last Airbender, I love anime art. So that place might be right up my alley.
