Minecraft.

I remember Star Control 2 being really really really big, too... it's been about 12 years or so since I've played it, though.

Fuel's world is 5,560 sq. Miles. Or 14,400 sq kilometers. It is in the guiness book of world records as largest console game world. Its not randomly generated either. Too bad the game is mediocre.

It has to be Just Cause 2. I traded that game in because the map was too big.
Wait what?
I dont understand?
I thought thats a good thing.
It was too big. It takes something like 40 minutes to FLY from one side to the other so by the time I got to start a mission, I was already sick of playing the game.

EDIT: Google Earth Flight Sim has a pretty big map considering you can go to the moon and mars too...
It took 6 minutes to fly diagonally across the map in the fastest plane in the game, which you unlock after like an hour.

I'm just sayin'.

Anyways: Yeah, Minecraft.
Eight times the surface area of earth!
I don't think any game has beaten that...yet.

Yes but that plane costs and you need a place to take off from, which is quite hard to find in a game that is mainly woodland and buildings. Also, 6 minutes? I'm pretty sure it took me longer than that...

False. The flying in space sections don't really count.

Correct answer: Minecraft.
Each generated world is 8 times the size of Earth.
Booyah.
.-. Holy shit, I didn't even know that could be done.

I apologise, I didn't realise you wanted someone to just play the game for you.

Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall is another contender.
wikipedia said:
Bethesda claims that the scale of the game is equal to twice the size of Great Britain:[1] around 487,000 square kilometers. The game world features over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons for the player's character to explore. According to Todd Howard, an Elder Scrolls programmer, the game's sequel, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, is 0.01% the size of Daggerfall, but it should be noted most of Daggerfall's terrain was randomly generated.

Minecraft! *hides knees*
A note on minecraft though, 8x the size of the world is the maximum area a map can cover. It doesn't generate the entire surface of a planet when you start a game, but only generates new areas when the player explores them (so if you back up your game, explore eastward, revert to the backup, and explore eastward again, the area will be different)

On a more serious note though, ArmA.2's default map is about 225km^2. None of which is separated by load screens or generated on the fly, meaning a single scenario can cover the entire map without any interruptions. I assume this is what you're asking.

Of course, that's just if you're restricting this to stuff where it's detailed sufficiently for the player to be able to walk around, otherwise, it'll probably be some space sim. A few hundred kilometre's tend to look kinda meagre next to an entire star system, never mind an entire galaxy... so I think "the grand prize" for the largest playable environment would probably go to Spore, where you have an entire galaxy to dick around in.

Really, is there any need to be like that? For instance, I can see a 'yo mamma' joke in what you wrote but I ain't gonna go there, I'm above that. So, I didn't like the game, no need to be so confrontational about it...
