I don't know how many of the members here are sports fans but for those of you that are...
What do you believe would win the award for biggest upset in sports?

My pick goes to USA beating Spain in the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup just yesterday.
Just some stats to show you why I believe this to be such a HUGE upset. Up until this game Spain had not had a goal scored on them since 2006! USA is only the 14th ranked team in the division and barely made it to the semi-finals (and by barely I mean it was almost an impossibility that they would). Spain is the number 1 team in the world. And somehow USA managed to not only score on Spain but win the game 2-0 shutting out the best team in the world. INSANITY.

But what would you say is the greatest sports upset and why?

Im an american, but i have no faith in the US soccer team, never have. Spain just phoned it in today. In the big scheme of football this tournament doesnt matter. Ill gladly eat my shoes the day we win the world cup.

That said, greatest upset the US hockey team defeating russia back in the day.
Ah, yeah that was a really good one too. I understand lack of faith in the US soccer team hence why I was jumping around and pouring shots earlier when I watched the game. It was nuts.. we looked great and gave me a little hope that we have a fighting chance in the World Cup next year.

Yea, I'm American too, whatever. I don't think we'll ever win the cup, we don't put in the effort to learn the game. Hopefully, though I doubt it, this will be a turning point.

Also, this must suck ass after basketball in the Olympics. We win at our sport and theirs

The XFL ending. (lol)
That and the soccer guy who head butted that other player. (why can't I remember his name?) I felt ashamed of that guy. His last game and he threw it away.

I am not really a sports fan, i do however like the Cardinals, so to me it was the bastard stealers cheating us out of our victory at the superbowl!!

I just dropped in to say the biggest upset ever was those goofey little dancerpeople over susan boyle. No one on this side of the pond expected to stop hearing about that so quick.

During the Grifball Spring League '07, I belive it was, one of the players scored a point without dying! No explosion or anything! And then it happened again in the UK Summer '08 league!

2004. Boston Red Sox become the first team in history to come back from a 3-0 defiecit in the American League Pennet. This upset as we all know allowed Boston to sweep the world series (For the first time in 86 years.). After that every Yankee fan in the world couldn't look at there trademark symbol and Internet Memes popped everywhere such a This [http://www.jamietsao.com/blog/uploaded_images/YankeesChoke-736122.jpg]

I could have picked any of the three Patriot Superbowl wins,The Celtics Championship, Or even the 07 Sox but none of those even come close to that series.

Isn't it a bit early to call the biggest upset of the century? I mean, we just started it, I'm sure there'll be a lot more upsetting stuff in the next 90 years.
Like death sports.
Or nuclear gladiators.

I find that the US team is usually the surprise - if they get into a tournament, they can achieve a lot. They're not generally considered a good team, but they have quite a few decent players.

Plus, Tim Howard, usually not even near the Top 20 of goalkeepers, had the game of his life. Saved the collective American skin more than once. And Spanish defense was Le Turd in this one. The Yanks had maybe 3-4 attacks in the whole game? And that was enough to score 2 goals (the 2nd one was especially awful, defense-wise).

OK, that being said, we can try and justify "Spain's bad day" all we want, but in the end, it's the final score that counts - the ref didn't make any big mistakes, so US was just better, I guess.

Aaaaand... The biggest of the decade (we still have 9 of those to go)? I'd say Orlando's loss in this season's NBA Finals. As much as LA was the favored team, Orlando was plainly bad in the finals, a completely different team to the one which stormed through the regular season and had very good playoffs. Maybe it was van Gundy's mistake to try and keep Jameer Nelson on the court for so long in... Game 4, was it? Maybe he should've gone with the "Two towers" tactics and have Howard/Gortat in the paint, to counter Gasol/Bynum. Anyway, Orlando's performance in the finals was a MASSIVE disappointment for me.

Agreed on the disappointing performance by Orlando.. but I wouldn't really call it an upset. LA was favored to win that, so its not really an upset. Definitly upsetting though.

Actually, Spain had yet to give up a goal for the duration of the Confederations Cup. They hadn't lost since November 2006 (Romania 1-0). April 1st, 2009 they did give up a goal to Turkey.

Well, for me that was the upset - that they lost in such a bad style, not just that LA won, because almost everyone with more than two brain cells gave them an 80% chance of winning. OK, in my case it might have also been the hope that Gortat would be the first Polish player to win the NBA championship that made it more upsetting...

To me it felt like Orlando shouldn't have beaten the Cavs in the Eastern Finals.
I think Cavs rely too heavily on LeBron. I mean, the team is basically built around him. I guess you could try saying the same about Lakers and Kobe, but the way they are now, it just wouldn't give justice to all the players that can serve as backup should Kobe have a bad day... Which is not the case with Cavs.

I stand corrected.. still pretty impressive stats for USA to overcome. I mean did anyone really think the US team had a shot in hell?

thats pretty much it.

what i think happened was this:

spain coach: "you guys feel like playing today?"
team spain: "meh, w/e they are only 14th...we dont care"
spain coach: "well, go out there and...do whatever..."
spain team: "hey guys! wanna grab pizza while the game plays..im kinda bored!"
