When I logged into Steam today it started a fairly large patch for Bioshock 2, it had a news item explaining why,
BioShock 2 Updated
Product Update - Valve 19:23
Hey BioShock 2 fans!

In August, the Games For Windows LIVE service marketplace closed and some of you wondered what would happen to BioShock 2 on PC. We remain committed to supporting BioShock 2 on PC and are excited to announce that starting today the game is available via Steam. Not only that, but the Steam version of BioShock 2 includes all available multiplayer downloadable content, as well as the single player ?Protector Trials? DLC!

With the help of our friends at Digital Extremes, BioShock 2 on Steam fully supports popular features of the platform, including controller compatibility, Steam achievements, and Big Picture mode. Matchmaking is easier than ever now, allowing you to search for ?any game,? as opposed to having to select your game mode. Leveling up is also quicker and easier, as we?ve fine-tuned the multiplayer experience to be better than ever.

If you have already purchased BioShock 2 through a different digital partner, we?ve got you covered. Simply take the same game activation key you already own and ?activate? it within Steam. Doing this will grant you access to BioShock 2, all of its multiplayer and Protector Trials DLC, as well as Minerva?s Den ? the single player story-driven add-on that includes new weapons, enemies, and plasmids!

For more information on BioShock 2 on Steam, you can visit: http://2kgam.es/bioshock2steam
So with Games for Windows Live winding down at least Bioshock 2 will be fine, lets hope other games that rely on it will receive similar treatment.

Is there... anybody still playing the multi-player for Bioshock 2?

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm excited that I might finally be able to try Minerva's Den (though from the sounds of it that won't be provided free of charge), but it's a bit laughable that they're trying to pump the life back into that.

EDIT: It seems that already owning Bioshock 2 meant I got Minerva's Den automatically. Class act, 2k, I knew there was a reason I had a mild fondness for you guys.

I've played the game back when it was out on the 360 and while it's multiplayer was quite choppy and laggy at times, it was fun.

Though i'm glad GFWL is gone which means I can now buy the whole B1-2+DLC for a really cheap price on steam and get the nostalgia goggles back on.

Would be cool too if multiplayer were still alive on PC because I wouldn't mind diving back in.

Yeah, I played it back when the game was fairly new and while it was fun, it was also glitchy and without any real staying power IMO. I can't imagine many are still playing it though maybe I'm wrong.

I remember the multiplayer for Bioshock 2 and thought it would be great... if the netcode wasn't complete and utter otter-balls elephant-shit retarded.

...So what does that mean for me, given that I have a physical copy? Unless my memory's playing tricks on me, I still needed to route the dang thing through GFWL, and I'm not sure the CD code will work on Steam :/

If you had the game before the patch, you get Minerva's Den for free. I bought it on steam two years back and never bought Minerva's Den. When I turn on steam this morning, what do I find I have? Minerva's Den. So... Yeah. :p

OT: Nice. At least this game will have a happy ending, now that the service is well and truly dying. Wish other companies, like Ubisoft and EA, would do this with their games from that same time period, though... I want to have unlimited installs for Crysis, dammit! D:

Oh my gosh yes. And now I kind of want to play Bioshock 2 again.

Retroactively eliminate GFWL from all games, all past, present, and future developers, I will grant you wishes.

If Bethesda takes it out of Fallout 3 and adds steam achievements, that fucker will be 100%ed within the hour.

No Achievements, but taking GFWL off Fallout 3 is completely trivial, it's just a straightforward mod.

I'm a bit taken back by this, I was hoping they'd do something like this so I could buy Minerva's Den, instead they gave it me free?

this. I'm more concerned about my Batman games, but this is still a good first step
GFWL is the only reason I don't play Batman.

I have the disc version of Bioshock 2 which is not a Steam one, it is GFWL though, so what would happen to my one? I only bought it a week ago for $5 at a local store since I hadn't had the chance to play it and it has no controller support etc, and I played the first one on Xbox and liked the controls. I just booted it up and no update, so yeah, that kinda sucks.

Just finished verifying that. The product code on the back of the manual does successfully activate the product on Steam. So good news for us! :D

Incidentally, it also looks like that makes the disc redundant. After activating the product on steam, I noticed that Steam didn't recognize my already installed copy and was asking me to install through them.

It worked for me too and you also get Mierva's den that way.

I actually don't mind GFWL so much, never had problems with it.

What's about save file? Does it still use the same save file in My documents folder?

Couldn't tell ya. I tried reinstalling with the disc first and my computer wouldn't even read that before I deleted the last remnants of my Bioshock 2 folder (which is to say my save data). So I'm starting from scratch anyways.

I have it on 360 so it means nothing to me but good for you guys! If you havn't played minerva's den do it now! Great little story, totally overshadows the main games (bioshock 2) plot :)
