It's a brilliant game and it can't be very expensive if you buy it now. You might as well just play it.

Maybe you should just get the original Bioshock?

It would be a lot better to play the original Bioshock, there's no rush since number 2 wont come out for a while.

Play Bioshock, enjoy it and you will appreciate the story a lot more than if one of us told you.
Sometimes, one cannot be bothered to play a previous game.
If someone can't be bothered to play the first game they shouldn't be "bothered" to play the second.

Why the hell not? If the second seems attractive, then it's a good idea to play it. But it might be that actually playing the first doesn't seem like something he wants to do, and that's his decision. OP should be commended for actually wanting any background knowledge when he's planning on playing the sequel. Most people who wants to play Bioshock 2 without having played Bioshock would just play it and not bother with the prequel at all.

In a few cases, a sequel has everything from the first game and more, with the exception of a different story. An excellent example is Gears of War.

Now, I can understand why the OP wouldn't want to buy a previous game when they can get the exact same gameplay (and more!) and they can simply learn the story for free.

I'll tell you why. For $15 he can get a used copy of the game. If someone tells you about a game then there is only so much you can take from it. If you play the game you can get the experience and get a feel for what the second one will be like. But lets assume he doesn't play it. He goes and gets Bioshock 2 for $60 and doesn't like it. That's $60 dollars gone on a game he doesn't like. It wouldn't be the first time a game looked good but failed to deliver. It would just be smarter for him to get his hands on a used copy of Bioshock and see if he likes it.

Why not play the original? It's on the cheap now...even new it's gotta be 20 bucks.

And the plot is a little hard to explain as it's partially a morality tale about Ayn Rand and her crazy writings.

That's a pretty good point, thanks for elaborating. However i still think it's his choice. I've personally found reading about the game very interesting, more so than actually playing it.

Play the first one for God's sake. If you play it you have a greater respect for the plot and you can get all the references. Not to mention that it gives you something to do till the sequel come out.

Fine. I respect your side of this discussion. But, I think your wrong. Personal playing experience would be better. BTW, your welcome. I hate people who just can't back up what they say. Instead of an actual reason, its just a one line response; Then after you ask them to explain, they can't respond b/c they don't know.

Guy crashes airplane, wanders into underwater city built on ayn rand ideology, lead along on the radio by a man called Atlas, facing off against the mayor of the city, Andrew Ryan, discovers "Little Sisters" have ADAM which is used to cause desired mutations, ADAM has turned all of rapture's citizens into crazed ADAM-addicted splicers. Little Sisters are protected by giant diving suits with drills for hands called Big Daddy's.

Atlas leads you around rapture, trying to escape, along the way you pick up audio diaries hinting at some sinister plot involving brain manipulation. You get to Andrew Ryan, and discover that you were born in Rapture and were brainwashed as a child into following any order given with a specific phrase. Using the keyphrase "Would you kindly", Atlas forces you to kill Andrew Ryan, then tries to take you out of the picture by stopping your heart with the phrase as he feasts on ADAM. You take up the guise of a Big Daddy, and bring Atlas to his doom, assisted by the Little Sisters (if you were kind to them in the course of the game). In the ending scene for the "good" ending (the only one I finished), you die an old man with the little sisters grown up into adults, being their father figure.

Just play the original Bioshock it will explain the story and back story etc.
Be alot better than one of us having to explain it.
If you play the game youl understand alot more and probably find it alot better from self experiance.
