BioWare: MMORPGs Have "No Point"

Well seeing how large the Star Wars universe has gotten with the countless books, games and movie storylines, they do have some directions to go storywise.
But if its an MMO its going to have to drop the story at some point for quests and the occasional PVP. And lets face it, they're not going to have a player driven story either. So its going to end up like all MMOs at some point.

Well, it's true. If you're playing an MMO there is no actual endgame, no final goal. If you're playing then it's for its own sake. If you enjoy that then good for you, if not then you're going to wonder why people play them.

I'm a Sims3 fan and the same applies to that genre. The only goals are the ones we set ourselves, like getting to level 50 or obtaining a certain mount or other shiny in an MMO or trying to see how many ghosts you can get to haunt a certain house in The Sims.

I'm not a fan of MMOs myself, I have to say, what's the point of any game?
To enjoy it. Lots of games are just mindless fun, and as long as the someone enjoys playing it, the game has accomplished something.

You tell 'em, Bioware! I don't agree with your claims that JRPG's aren't truly RPG's, but this I can get behind!

I think Bioware is overextending themselves here. They may be good at single player, but MMO's are a whole new can of worms. Something I've noticed is that for Bioware games to retain any staying power they require multiple playthroughs, which is great with Bioware's branching stories, but not with the MMO format. For an MMO to be successful, the focus needs to be on replay value not dependent on more playthroughs. Also, for this to work, Bioware needs to take a crash course in updating content/patching, which Bioware has a sketchy history with already IMO.

I totally agree!!! Of course if your market is kids under 15 maybe that would work but IMO, and I have played them, MMORPGs are a waste of both time and money.

I'd call that right on the money. I have my issues with Bioware, but it there's one thing they know, it's deep story and character development.

Didn't final fantasy XI try to jam a story in there? It was terrible.

Frankly, if there's anybody to make an MMO with an actual story it's Bioware.

From what I've seen of the game so far, it seems like what I wanted original MMOs to be.

God I hope they pull this off. If they can make MMOs interesting on a story level...Well then I think I'll gain some more faith in humanity that people actually still care about reasoning behind the doing.

Is it just me or are BioWare being extremely controversial recently? First the FFXIII thing, and now this, which is sure to piss quite a few MMO players off.
Agreed.

"Hey look at me, I want attention!"

That's the vibe I get from them. In order to feel successful, they seem to feel a need to bash others. Like jealous little children.

-10 respect points to Bioware (which had already lost 10 recently).
sorry if this has been addressed already and that im only quoting you as ive seen plenty of other misguided posts also, but bioware are generally the best at making RPG's. Most of their games have more interesting/fun/deep/compelling npc's than any other RPG around. I am extremely pleased to see that someone is interested in making a compelling mmorpg as it has never been done before! all of them are shit in my opinion...and anyone else with half a brain to be honest!! they reward you for spending money monthly and wasting your time by putting up some theoretical numbers. there is no story and no character to any characters/npc's and you repaet the exact same one or two missions with bigger and bigger numbers involved! no story/plot just a waste of time some of them arent even pretty to look at, the overly popular WOW for one is a badly rendered cartoon!!

Popularity is not an argument for quality! Only goes to show that the modern media is further succeeding in dumbing the mass populace in to buying and liking whatever they are told to! look at the modern pop music scene for example! Also other popular rpg's that are still great fun to play and are graphically good such as fallout 3 and oblivion yet the lack of character in the NPC's just lets the story fall flat on its face! They are supposed to be Non Player Character's but most of them should just be called Non Player's. These character's are the life of the story!(it rests on their heads!) if they arent compelling enough to get an emotional reaction out of the player then they have failed! Hands up who wiped out the towns in Fallout3 or oblivion out of boredom at some point? the only reason you regret doing it is because 1)the story/game that is, cant progress. and 2)you cant even steal their stuff as it magically dissapeers from their corpse to force you to play nice, as punishment for slaughtering the town!
The game should make you want to help out the NPC's with their problems because the are believeable characters/people. It should steer away from the player wanting to slaughter every NPC in the game out of boredom as it seems you are the only person in this world who does not walk around like an animatronic sex doll!

Bioware Have many humourous and fun characters in their games some characters you like so much you would risk your own characters life to save them! They have made some of the best RPG's around and their point here is well made. About time someone said it! unfortunately i think we are decades away from having the full technology to make a truly great MMORPG as what it should be, but will none the less look forward to this bioware attempt!:)

It's stuff like this that makes me respect Bioware so much. They get it. They just get how an RPG should work. And they treat the games they make with enormous care too, making sure they're the highest quality possible. I have high hopes for this game, especially since it was KOTOR that got me really hooked on the Role Playing genre as a kid.

Great to hear Bioware is breaking the mold, like Areanet did before them (and are still doing).

Unfortunately my money is gonna go towards the new Guild Wars game, but this one looks so awsome!
