That sounds awesome, I wish we had things like this in England...
We do, it's called January Sales... I had my share of being woken at half 5 to get down to the shops for the opening at 7.

I'm working Friday, but since most people are in the mall and have a refrigerator full of leftovers, that is one of the quietest days of the year for me.
Tomorrow and Thursday, however, I might have to kill someone. I'm already breaking out the riot gear and tear gas.

As a brit, we hav no such black-friday thing happening, except of course, the January sales! That's because everyone hates everyone else, and NO-ONE wants to give you discounts on anything. Christ, our money is just too valuable to just give it away in exchange for goods!

Quick question for you yanks, do you still have that 14% tax thing added onto the discount?

does the ''black'' refer to the people killing each other over the best bargains?
i thought it had something to do with christianity...(
I was told it had more to do with the fact that this was usually the day where stores could start going from being "in the red" (or in debt) to "in the black" (or making a profit) because of the Christmas shopping season.
I thought it was anti-racism.

I dunno, if Gamestop has another half off deal like they did a few months back I may consider it. Otherwise I'm staying home and chilling out while the rest of the city erupts.

Ahh, I've worked two Black Fridays and that was pretty much hell. People are psycho when items are 40% off. The good news was that I was up in time for breakfast for once in my life.

I'm stuck in Ireland until December, but I've dropped mad hints on what I want for my birthday/Christmas so that hopefully my family members are brave enough to navigate the hordes of zombie like consumers to make it to the nearest BestBuy.

I'm trying for my own 360 Elite for Christmas. Wish me luck.

No! No thank you. I shop online and in the off seasons. I prefer not to deal with people especially deranged, bargain crazed soccer moms.

A consumer rampage with zombie overtones (or maybe zombie rampage with consumerist overtones)? No, thankyouverymuch. If a wave of crazy shoppers rolled down my street for some arbitrary reason, i'd probably use teargas. Lots and lots of it.

[small]I don't like stampeding crowds. At all.[/small]
That's why I shop online, there's good deals there too...

I usually just listen to "Black Friday Rule" by Flogging Molly.

Also

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(1978)
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Black_Fridays

I've always taken issue with it being called Black Friday.
Flogging Molly is awesome.

I don't agree with Black Friday. I say stretch the sales a week long not one day. That way there won't be so many people. And perhaps if they did that last year that Wal-Mart employee may not have died.

this seems most likely. corporatists aren't so sensitive to things like historical or religious contexts, they just think about their bottom line.

Didn't a few people die during black friday in the states last year? I guess I totally underestimated the cheapness and self-centeredness of people... Honestly, if I was in that group and someone fell, I would not just step on them, I would try to help them up...
That's the difference between Black Friday and a real mosh-pit - a good mosh-pit stops to pick people up, because everyone is trying to have a good time. People on Black Friday hate each other because they know everyone else is getting their good deals.
Never underestimate America!

No such thing here in Canada. But if there was such a mystical sale here, I'm sure I would quickly run to the nearest Wallmart, climb onto the roof before the crowds form, and when the store opens watch the carnage from a unique vantage point.

I'm going. L4D2 and some other new releases are gonna be $35. I'm gonna try and get all the good cheap games.

Also, didn't they trample some guy to death at Wal-Mart last year?

Wasn't thanksgiving like... last month?

Get with the times!
Here, in Canada, it was October 12th. In the U.S however, it's this Thursday.

Get with the times yourself.

I should add: It's always this way. Here it's the 2nd Monday of October and in the U.S it's the 4th Thursday of November and traditionally kicks off the holiday season over there.

In the U.S it has a story involving English settlers and some friendly Natives who helped them and the "thanksgiving" that ensued while over here it's just thanking god for our good life.
Definitely wasnt joking around or being sarcastic or anything :p

It was a female shop assistant I think. Not one of humanities proudest moments.

I'm going to be spending the holiday in Philly, so I might watch this supposedly nightmarish scenario from a safe distance...But I might get stuck in if Gamestop have got any deals going.
