This is a subject thats been discussed quite alot recently, but i havent seen it on here.

Okay, we have two situations.

In situation one, A generic white person in his work place says to his Generic Ginger friend aloud 'haha, your extremely ginger'

In situation two, A generic white person in his work place says to his Generic Black friend aloud 'haha, your extremely black'

In Situation one and two, a minority is insulted over the way they look, So what makes situation two so much worse that situation one.

Enlighten me.

Situation 2. One is Caucasian, the other Black (teasing based on race)

I don't recall Caucasions enslaving, murdering, raping or pillaging the lands of gingers, but it has happened with Africans.

but yeah what the guy above me said at one point we did oppress black people so its kind of more offensive than calling gingers.

EDIT: ginger isnt a medical condition its actually a genetic trait of the vikings/scots and irish people. so yeah calling some one ginger is calling another race of humans so it should be the same

I think this is pretty retarded IMO, that it needs to be explained.

Nothing is wrong with either in terms of teasing, but the social stigma that is carried with insulting an ethnic minority, as opposed to a minority in general, is obviously socially unacceptable. Gingers in general, have not been widely prejudiced against on the scale of an ethnic minority, despite the constant jokes that exist of them.

Hell, if you said "haha, you're so gay!" you might have a case. But alas, and even then I don't consider it to be that bad.

Red hair isn't a race. It's an uncommon defect.

Some "minorities" are just more privileged in that respect, mostly based on how highly publicized whatever plight they went through is, as well as how it's portrayed in the media. In the example you gave, it's the whole American slavery thing, which is pretty much always portrayed as an ethnic conflict of whites enslaving blacks. The whole context of slavery being a pretty much universal thing throughout most of history, both within and between various ethnic groups, as well as the fact that many of the African slaves sold to the West were captured by other Africans in tribal warfare and sold by them, is generally ignored.

Similar thing goes for the Jews - any criticism of Israel's policies or actions of individuals of Jewish descent (and even something as trite as casting a Jewish voice actor in the role of a rodent) is often outright decried as anti-Semitism, all because of the Holocaust. At the same time, "dumb Polack" jokes remain politically correct, because the fact that the Poles were the second largest group to be killed in the Holocaust (and being subjected to 2 separate genocides specifically against them at the same time) just doesn't feature in public perception.

It all comes down to common perception. Gingers were never a subject of well-publicized discrimination, and therefore abusing them because of their looks will never be deemed politically incorrect.

I just think that if something is offensive, it is so because of this person's own history and characteristics, not specifically because of their race/complexion/religion/sexual orientation/gender/whatever else is used to designate "minorities". These things might, and not uncommonly do, factor into it, but in my opinion, saying that every single black person will be offended if you offer them fried chicken is as racist as saying that they will all kill their own mothers for a bit of said chicken.

PS: Disclaimer to avoid any silly misunderstandings: (1) I am not claiming that slavery or the Holocaust were morally neutral (2) I am not trying to deny that abuse, on any basis, is just plain wrong (3) I say "minorities" because to me, designating those is just a subset of stereotyping. So if you think my post was motivated by prejudice, think again.

Well it'd be seen as worse for the black person to be teased, as equal oppurtunities would be down on you like a ton of bricks.

The problem with over stressing equality is that we are made to feel terrified of saying something offensive, rather than ideally where we'd be relaxed around them and we'd know that we're equals.

Unfortunately humanity is divided like that, it's primitive but we have the ability and the potential to be educated otherwise, but the manner in which we are educated in this is overbearing rather than seemless.
