Yeah, I stopped reading Bleach after it tried to continue its story after it ended but the female characters have always been lacking.

You got further than me, it put me off after one volume. Fast to judge? Yes. So would you be if the only place selling manga anywhere near you was an evil mega-corporation that actually sticks their high prices on over the original RRP so you can only see how much you were screwed when you get home. Worst part? They do because they know they're practically the only book store open that sells anything decent written within the past ten years. They know you have little to no choice.

Anyway, enough of my burning hatred of my practical slavery to waterstones, a little more of my hatred towards this kind of tactic in fiction. Games, films, whatever, this majorly pisses me off because, more than anything else, it insults me. They actually thought I was desperate enough (in the age of the internet, no less) to buy a manga for it's sexual content. If I want porn, I will look for porn. If I want people kicking demon ass, I don't want it obscured by someone's...erm, unlikely proportions. I think this may be why I'm not into many mangas, actually. I don't want to buy what looks like a kickass action manga, and end up with softcore anime porn.

Especially at about £7/8 a volume. (seriously, screw you waterstones, now take more of my money!)

No she can negate any and all space and time within her event-horizon shell. If she learns to actively control it then she's nearly as powerful as God.

Fair point, but I don't think it's fair to call FMA filler just because it's different from the manga. There's about six episodes from the original series you can just skip over and be perfectly fine as far as the main story goes. That's my definition of filler. Now look at Bleach. Of the 200ish episodes that were out when I stopped watching it, I think I may have watched 60ish. If I myself wasn't looking up which episodes were filler and skipping them, I never would have known I was missing out on 70% of the show. To me, that's just offensive and it's why I don't watch hardly any anime to this day. Oh, and Brotherhood kicks substantial ass. I'd say it's my favorite, but I'm waiting for the rest of it to come to Netflix so I can finally finish it.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the original series almost as much as Brotherhood.
And calling it filler is indeed a bit wrong.
Adaptation Alteration might be a better term.

...You are aware that this is an anime right? Fan-service happens a damn lot. More common in popular ones too. Panty-shots, skimpy clothes, big boobs, torn clothes, it's just how it is.

But I'm almost completely sure there's worse fanservice out there... High School of the Dead levels come to mind...

Actually, I have to agree with you on this topic. I've seen about 305 episodes of bleach, can name all the characters, their swords (save for Kenpachi's) and I actually have to say that you have brought up a very important issue.

The main reason I think the developers set things up this way was because it reflects the values of the show (women being bad fighters shows a dependence on men, and all the men depend on Ichigo, enforcing the show's moral of men protecting the family and their close group of freidns) or just showing off breasts and butts for the sake of attracting the ecchi/hentai crowd which can consist of perverted older men/teenage boys.

It's shonen, so it's for guys. But it has a very japanese problem in that it seems to follow a tradition of women looking up to men for protection while the women are seen as weaker and inferior in a fight.

To put up a flame shield, these are not my morals, just what I believe the publisher is trying to convey.

Too many characters leads to too many being the same.
Theres ichigo and every other male seems to be a variation of him or the females.
Then theres orihime and others like her, nel
Finally theres rukia, the blonde vizard and riruka.

Bleach sucks at characterization, honestly most are replaceable with one another, unfortunately none ever die except for my one of three actually liked characters, Gin.

If you think the fanservice is bad than you going to gore your eyes out from checking out Hightshool of the Dead, Queen Blade or Ikki Tousen.

Bleach is a Shonen anime meaning the target audiences is for male teenager. Yes I agree a couple of the female casts are useless well mainly Orihime (the amount of times I hear her saying "Kurosaki Kun!" make my ears bleed) but she probably better than Sakura from Naruto (efore Shipudden). The useless female lead is a typical thing from Shonen .

This seems appropriate.

It's anime, dude. Pretty much all powerful women are set up for failure. Guaranteed that some male figure will teach her a lesson by smacking her around in battle. But it's for her own good of course. She might even learn from it, getting beat up is good for her.

Surprisingly Yoruichi is the only character that hasn't really happened to. She's not really a sex object since she's strong in her own right. She's just nice to look at while she's kicking your ass. A dark skin women who's one of the strongest fighters, intelligent, and does her own thing? How the hell did that happen? You don't even see that in the US.

Now the orange haired chick with the healing powers, she got smacked around good. Had a broken arm even, that'll teach her.

Unlike guy with glasses, cool mexican guy, and guy with orange hair whose dad is not a normal dad, Inoue is just an average school girl, sure her power is awesome despite lacking any offensive capabilities, but that does excuse the fact that she is useless as guy with glasses, cool mexican guy, and except guy with orange hair whose dad is not a normal dad.

(what I'm trying to say is, out of the main human cast, only Ichigo is a decent fighter. The rest are just there to make an interesting appearance, then get wtfpwned by their opponent)

There are enough female leads that are more interesting in the bleachverse like Yuroichi, Soifon, Vizard's Lisa, Niel etc ...

The female characters of bleach i REALLY I'm starting to hate. There mainly weak fighters or sex objects for the Kids. All of the hero's of the show ether are VARY weak at fighting or wear the sluttish outfits to show off there butt or boobs.

The Villeins ware skimpy outfits but there muuuch better at fighting thus there better characters I don't mind fan service but in the context of a person don't make them a main character (and Bleach has f***ing plenty!)) A weak fighter and a sex object.

And no fans of the show yell at me about the black ninja girl or Rukia(the only one i like) Yeah there good fighters but the ninja girl is a SEX OBJECTx100.
(also having a bad guy that's a 10 year old girl just barely having enuf leather on to cover her "nautey bits" its sick)

This is an interesting jumping off point to what I think is a bigger problem surrounding Anime and most other things (Videogames, movies, books, TV, what ever)

A common way to make something seem original with out doing any real work is to take a cliche character (For sake of keeping this relevant take "The bad ass action hero") and changing one aspect of them (IE gender). Because bad ass action heroes are so easy to write and easy to base a story around they end up doing this a lot. And it's finally gotten to the point where the bad ass action girl has become the new cliche and seeing a bad ass action guy or even a girl who isn't bad ass is starting to become a refreshing change of pace.

I'm not trying to defend the skimpy outfits or anything, I mean I love skimpy outfits and fanservice but I'm not going to defend them.

Hey Yoruichi is pretty badass, so is Soifon. Orihime too but its the fact that she's too nice, otherwise she would be more broken than Aizen.

Wait a minute if Orihime's power is to uncreate or make it so that things never happened .., why doesnt she just make it so that none of the captains ever saw Aizens shikai release?

Although i suppose you could handwave that as Aizen seemed to be the only person who knew the extent of her powers.

And Ichigo, Aizen, and so many others aren't sex objects for girls? You gotta look at it from a wider scope, and objectively both genders have their share of studs and cowards, and it's actually spread out enough to have a varied set of characters. Besides, it's fantasy, and in practically every fantasy setting the characters are idealized a bit, with their looks showing off a part of their personalities. also, boobs notwithstanding, pretty much every female character in the Bleach series is very fit if not downright athletic, so objectively they would be able to kick some ass, it's simply that all the guys are in the same boat too, so it comes more down to the characters that are more integral to the combat plot being more powerful.
