Blizzard Considers Console MMOGs "All The Time"

Ever since World Of Warcraft [http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Pc/dp/B000067FDW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278969746&sr=1-3] debuted in 2004, gamers have been wondering when the MMOG would make it to consoles and apparently Blizzard has too.

Millions of people play games only on consoles while there are also millions of people who play MMOGs on their computers. So far, those two groups have been mutually exclusive, with Final Fantasy XI [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XI-Ultimate-Collection-Pc/dp/B002SQNGX2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279052376&sr=1-1] being the only notable exception. There are many reasons why that is true, and J. Allen Brack, lead producer of World of Warcraft, says that memory, patching and imput devices are among them. He doesn't completely rule out that bringing MMOG to consoles is a possibility, just that it's unlikely to happen with WoW.

Why does Brack think it has taken so long to have a breakout MMOG on a console? "I think there's a lot of reasons," said Brack. "There's not one thing. One is, it takes a long time to develop an MMOG. The lifecycle of consoles being what they are, you have to really time when your console's going to come out, what its projected lifecycle is going to be with when your game is going to be, which is challenging."

"In the case of WoW, we talk about it all the time," he said. "How would we bring WoW to the console?"

The biggest problem may be that even with a game disc, WoW would need a substantial amount of space on a console's HD in order to function. Some current-gen consoles don't even have a hard disk.

Then there's the myriad of other technical issues which Brack outlines:

There's patching challenges, there's the quality controls that we have vs. the quality controls that say, a Microsoft or Sony or Nintendo has. All those things sort of raise the bar in terms of the challenges and then specifically in the case of WoW, WoW was designed to be a keyboard game and its control scheme and its camera controls and the number of abilities that you have and the spells and how things work are very keyboard-centric. The idea of translating that to a gamepad is a very, very challenging proposition.

Finally, Brack comes right out and states the obvious. "I think it's unlikely that WoWcomes to the consoles," he said. "It is something that we talk about on a pretty regular basis, but someone is going to figure out how to make an MMOG on a console and they're going to be wildly successful. I have no doubt about that."

Brack is being modest. If I had to bet, I'd say that "someone" is Blizzard and we might soon find out that the "next generation" MMOG that's currently in development at the Irvine studio will indeed straddle the line between PC and consoles.

and they must know very few people would want to pay for subscriptions to XBL AND a WoW-game.

Might be a mistake or I read it wrong. I'm not sure, I'm pretty tired.

On topic, I for one wouldn't like to see MMO's on consoles. Nothing against them but there are just so many things working against them. Memory space, controlls. To top it all off the community on consoles like xbox live is already quite unfriendly and adding MMO's will probably make it worse.

If an RPG can be played successfully on a consolve, then an MMORPG can. The mechanics of PC-based MMORPGs wouldn't transfer particulalry well--I wouldn't transfer WoW over to the consoles without major revisions to gameplay--but RPG mechanics we already see on consoles could become an MMO just fine.

I can certainly see his arguement and his point of view. Making an MMO on console is alot different than doing it on PC.

FFXI is an example of one, but, as it has shown once you go to a console you limit yourself...because you need to work in the confines of something that console can handle.

As we say in FFXI "PS2 Limitations"

It worked for Phantasy Star so I'm guessing they think it could work for them.

They could design a keyboard and mouse for the ps3 and xbox thats specifically for WoW and designed to work in game like a pc so thats not much of a problem.

i think you and blizzard have different definitions of 'worked'
theirs being millionS of subs after many years.
i doubt phantasy star has that many, if its still online.
i don't know for sure.

There was a big typo in your article, I got it for ya:
The biggest problem may be that if people buy a disc, they'd get pretty pissed off when we said they couldn't play unless they paid 15 bucks a month

i think the ps3 is in the perfect position for a mmo right now. the ps3 has the graphic capabilities to last the next 5ish years at least, has a large hard drive, you can even use a keyboard. the xbox would have been a good idea 2 or 3 years ago, but i dont think the xbox will last more than another 3 years.

I think a game like Torchlight would work well on a console, but probably not WoW. Unless you revised WoW to work with the Gambit system that Final Fantasy 12 had, that was basically a single-player MMO (then again, the fact that there were no subscription fees or loudmouth spoiled assholes was probably the game's biggest redeeming factor.)

CCP is releasing Dust 514 soon for consoles.

This game will interact with the EVE Online (PC Only MMO) Universe on the planet side of things.

Bridging the gap is already here

Might as well put another nail into the gaming coffin.
Just for the record: Grind is NOT gameplay, it's busywork. It's just unfortunate that every single MMORPG I have tried primarily revolves around two things:
1) Grind
2) Assholes

Why on earth would I willingly pay for that every month?

The depressing thing? It's apparently addictive, and it's the future of gaming.
Just like how Reality TV and Bruckheimer Cop Shows took over prime time, so will MMOS take over gaming. I can't wait for the subscription based bullshit to become standard.

As for the HD space, Doesn't the PS3 have like 60-120GB harddisk dependant on which version (and i assume the 360 is about the same) that should be more than enough for a MMO, WoW with expansions takes what, 15 GB?
Maybe it won't be able to go on the Wii, but the otehr 2 should be able to handle it HD wise.

For the controlls, you could always think outside of W0W-ish style. You could use button combinations/combos for atatcks and spells, like in hack'n slashers or fighters for instance. That could also different it from others, and if done like the 2 above mentioned genres, add more player-skill to combat instead of just strategy and pre-combat grinding.

I seem to rememebr reading, that the PS3 had an excpected lifespan of suprisingly many years left on this site somewhere.

I wouldn't be supprised if Blizz' announced new IP MMO was for consoles.

Could you imagine? Their userbase would probably double, if not triple.

I can see it now: Xbox Live goes to the Alliance, PSN goes to the Horde.

Birds of a feather, no?

Hardly, considering WoW has over half as many subscribers as the entirety of the XBL service.

Wait, what? Are you saying that WoW - in having half of XBL's numbers - would NOT double if they were included? I'm really confused to what you're trying to say with this comment.
