People finally figured out it's not worth paying money to borrow a movie for a week when you can get it from the library for free. Next week: People figure out that multibillion-dollar corporations don't have our best interests at heart and don't deserve our business. Ha ha. I can dream.

I still remember the days of my dad and I renting a Genesis from Blockbuster and playing it relentlessly.
It's kind of sad, especially since my friends works at the local Blockbastard. If they didn't charge such rediculous prices for movies, they might actually get a customer or two. Apart from that, the selection was always terrible.

Maybe this will make some small mom & pop video stores open, remember? Like the good old days? Small business FTW!

Well rest in peace I guess. This doesn't surprise me since the last time I went into a Blockbuster the manager was shocked to see anyone come in at all. My only question now is when the hell is Radio Shack going to finally die? I know it's not even the same kind of store but still.

Well, I cannot say I am surprised...the whole rental thing has been going downhill so badly. I have to admit, I never rent...
Yeah i cant remember the last time i got a rental movie....must been like 7-8 years ago when i was a kid! With the coming of the internet renting movies became pointless....the 30 movies i may rent in a month might aswell go to pay my internet bills....and i wont just enjoy movies with that.
After i moved to Australia i do buy DVDs but i never rent....

This is good news for local rental stores, which don't have to maintain national chains.

That's unfortunate, the ones around here in Michigan have been terrific. My family gets the game/movie pass so we go there a lot and get a great deal to rent whatever we want. I can literally rent a bluray/DVD/game, play it, go 10 minutes to Blockbuster, exchange, and repeat as often as I like.

Plus their used games are pretty much ALWAYS a better deal than EB games or Gamestop. I have never purchased a used game from those stores, only from Blockbuster, and always getting an excellent deal.

It doesn't hurt that the people that work at the local Blockbuster here are really cool and helpful as well.

The moment I noticed RedBox popping up outside every pharmacy within a square mile of my house, I knew that Blockbuster's days were numbered.

actually, in canada they are doing quite good. they reports profits every quarter.

I dont know how it work in the US, but here, they have plenty copies of games and movies, it cost 10$ for renting a game for a week, and you can keep it for 3 other weeks (total a month) for 8$ fees, so 18$ total. also when i rent 5 new movies in the same month i get a free movie, but each movies rented on wednesday worth 2, so rent 3 movie on a wednesday, you get a free rental (that you take for a game if you wish). they have the no late fees policy, plus the new system where you pay 10$ per month and have unlimited rental of classic movies per month (just one at the time), and the same thing with games for 30$.

so here they are the best rental company...

of course netflix is not available here...

Well, you know what this means, boys and girls... store closing sales times! When the local ones round here closed up during the last set of massive store closures, you could outrightly RAID the store, picking up for almost nothing hordes of games, movies, and more. Heck, I even snagged one of those 4 GB USB drives with games preloaded for about three bucks! Mark your calendars and keep an eye on the local chains, folks! And remember to bring a big stout bag.

...erm... what I mean to say is, this is a tragedy, and I feel deeply for those affected. Honest.

Damn, I had some good childhood memories from Blockbuster. With both them and Hollywood gone, looks like the age of the video rental store is over.

We can rent movie from vending machines at more locations than Blockbuster could ever hope to produce and at a price that makes renting from the local store seem like a huge waste of money. When the machines came, they lost the power of convenience and low cost. In the end, they became obsolete when Skynet....
Sorry, I went off on a tangent what is this thread about again?

Are they the same greedheads in charge? People who are out to screw you often know when to jump ship.
True, but I find half the fun lies in finding out which new ships they've jumped to, and figuring out how to avoid and/or sink those as well.
