If they do go under I'm sure there's still one or two round these parts I can go pillage. Nothing like buying a new game at gamestop trade in value.

When I was a kid, Blockbuster reigned supreme. Looks like Hollywood Video and Netflix finally canned them. :(

Very sad, I had lots of fond memories renting PS1 games from Blockbuster...or checking out the weird movie sections.
I never had such memories. I always rented from a family run place in town that wasn't part of a massive chain. I blame Blockbuster and Movie Gallery for killing my childhood source of movies.

Burn in bureaucratic hell Blockbuster! Vengeance is a dish best served cold!

[sub][sub]Could you also give me your games when you go out of business, thanks.[/sub][/sub]

OT: I saw this coming when I learned from about ten of my friends that renting was for chumps and that torrenting entire movies was the way of the future. Blockbuster deserves it if they failed to see the change and adapt in time.

I kinda figured it was going to happen sooner or later.

The rental market started going downhill when the mail order services started popping up. The whole Video on Demand thing isn't helping either. You don't have to worry about even sending a movie back with that system. What you want is always in, and you can watch it the second you make the purchase.

Now gaming consoles are offering movies in standard and HD. The movie rental store is a dying format.

To an earlier post, Blockbuster US and Blockbuster UK are seperate companies in legal terms.

The talk of troubles overseas caused Blockbuster UK MD Martin Higgins to state a few months ago: ?...Blockbuster UK is a separate legal entity, which is well-run and in a healthy financial condition with solid equity and no debt beyond normal accounts payables".

My local blockbuster was changed into a kebab shop.
The BlockBuster that I was going to apply at got turned into a public art gallery. Or somthing. Nothing I'd be intrested in working at, that's for sure.
But this DOES kind of bite the big one. I'm not one to trust RedBox after what it did to my father, but I DID use them to get cheapo previewed B-movies.
Now I actually have to look for them.
I mean, they arn't bad stores, but.... stagnation and all.
Out of curiosity, what did Redbox do to your father?

Oh good. I haven't rented a film in over 5 years and I've never rented a game, but Blockbuster are fantastic if you're a film collector because you can get some really good deals on ex-rental DVDs. I used to go into Blockbuster once a month after pay day and come out with 6-8 DVDs for an average £5 each.

Well as soon as NetFlix hits Canada I hope the same thing happens to Rogers Plus over here. Video Rental stores are the worst. Terrible prices, uninspired underpaid employees, terrible return policies and rental lengths, and poor selection...I was in one today to grab a movie to rent with dinner...was there for 30 minutes and found nothing...came home and watched one of my old DVDs.

If I was getting paid $8 an hour I highly doubt I would be very helpful too. I don't blame the employees for not giving 2 shits, but I do question why anyone would care about a job with no benefits that is tedious and low paying where you have to deal with moronic people constantly.

I wouldn't wish this on any company, but I can't say I'm going to miss Blockbuster.
They bought out the only store in my city that sold any decent amount of games/DVDs, which meant they sold older games/DVDs, not just new releases... then Blockbuster closed down. So now it's a 20 car journey to the nearest Game.

Hardly anyone does anymore. The prices are outrageous compared to buying a DVD, slightly less so for a game.

Everyone uses on demand services, mail services (netflix has been much better since they stopped dumping high turn around users to the bottom of their wait lists), and those little rental kiosk machines that are now at every gas station and grocery store.

They were doing well? Really? Are you from London? Because I live in London and haven't seen a BlockBuster Video for years (literally both stores near me closed down without a word). At least they were around somewhere.
No I'm not, I'm one of the ninety percent of people not from London, hooray for me!

There's a Blockbuster or two in just about every town (except for London apparently) and they always have people in them. Although, for the last six months I've been living in the countryside, so no Blockbuster here.

That was an interesting video, but I want my ten minutes back now.

To be quite honest, I stumbled upon this thread while checking the latest ZP. Which was iffy, but that's another matter entirely.. I've had an account for a while and just decided to post only now. I'm just somewhat curious what everyone's take is on the matter.

I actually work for Redbox in customer service. I get all kinds of crazy shit on the phones. But for the most part we work pretty damned hard to treat the customers well. Which is partly why I'm wondering what happened to Brain_Cleansers' dad. That said, Blockbuster really has done this to themselves.. Not to advertise, but we rent movies for a buck for one night, and you can return them to any kiosk across the country. If you want it for an extra night, it's an extra buck. That's it. I mean, if you keep it for 25 nights, it's $25 dollars, and you own it. No bullshit fine-print fees. Hell, in some test markets we rent out games for the same deal, just two bucks instead of one. Even if you keep it forever, it's still just $50. How much were you going to pay for that game from the store? Probably about $50. But I bet the store doesn't have a policy that you can pay just two dollars and return it the next day if you don't like it.. /Endrant.

For those of you that have rented from Redbox, what's your take on it?

Well, you know what this means, boys and girls... store closing sales times! When the local ones round here closed up during the last set of massive store closures, you could outrightly RAID the store, picking up for almost nothing hordes of games, movies, and more. Heck, I even snagged one of those 4 GB USB drives with games preloaded for about three bucks! Mark your calendars and keep an eye on the local chains, folks! And remember to bring a big stout bag.

...erm... what I mean to say is, this is a tragedy, and I feel deeply for those affected. Honest.
Mwahaha! A poster after my own heart.

We can rent movie from vending machines at more locations than Blockbuster could ever hope to produce and at a price that makes renting from the local store seem like a huge waste of money. When the machines came, they lost the power of convenience and low cost. In the end, they became obsolete when Skynet....
Sorry, I went off on a tangent what is this thread about again?
2050 - RedBox becomes self-aware. From our renting habits, it spontaneously generated a gestalt consciousness whose personality drew upon every action movie, comedy and horror film released in 2048. It proceeded to penalize the entire world for late submission, regardless of whether the discs had been returned or not.

That was when the first nukes were launched.

I'm not happy to see people losing their jobs, of course, but if any business deserved to fail, it was Blockbuster. I've seen few companies as anti-consumer as they are.

I'd rather not talk about it... I'm not over the emotional scars.
