ZOMG! LAZORGUNZ! Quick! Hide the children!

On a more serious note, will there ever be a technology that is developed not for warfare? All of our technologies (as far as I can recall) were adapted from military applications. This carries the implication that if we're ever able to achieve world peace, we'd be technologically stagnant (either that, or we'd be waging war with ALIENS.)

Bare in mind that these lasers are mounted in the nose cone of a civilian/transport aircraft and have to be on target for a considerable amount of time. Against a modern military aircraft, it's currently still useless. Particularly when you consider that a jet fighter is probably both cheaper and far more effective.

Interesting, but still useless at the moment.

im not entirely sure where i saw the article but i believe police forces were experimenting with a sort of civilian (or rather anti civilian) laser technology. it was meant to cause intense pain and minor burns however the laser could not shoot through metallic surfaces meaning that a simple thin layer of say... aluminum underneath a persons clothing would make them immune to this weaponry.
It's called the active denial system. It doesn't use lasers, but rather microwaves. Basically it fries the nerve endings in the outer layer of your skin, so it feels like you're standing under a magnifying glass on a sunny day. It's *supposed* to be relatively harmless, but they still haven't actually deployed any yet, because noone knows what the long-term effects of using it on humans are. Particularly humans with disorders and such.

The main idea is to shoot down Ballisitic missiles, it melts some of the outer layer causing the missiles trajectory to change or tear its self apart in the air from the combination of high speed and a broken surface.

So the first one was pure energy and the second used Bullets with energy?
Looks like someone over there likes Outlaw Star a little too much.
Yeah lets hope someone at NASA loves Cowboy Bebop enough to make jump gates and bad ass space ships.

You know what's great? Reports say it doesn't work if it has to go through clouds. An anti-air weapon that doesn't work when it's cloudy. Awesome.
