Alright, here is the story: I just recieved Breaking Dawn (the fourth book in the twilight series) as a gift. I know that Twilight the movie was a dud, however, for the book I have gotten some mixed messages, even here on The Escapist. Some people say the books are just as bad as the movie, while others say the movie was terrible but the books are ok.

So, my question is, should I read it? It would be impolite not to, but I'm not going to go through 700+ pages for politeness' sake.

Have you read the other books? I would say if you have read them and like them go for it. If you haven't read them, I would say read the first one and see what you think and go from there. I personally haven't read them nor do I plan to as they go against my image of vampires.

Don't read it. In fact bury it, bury it and hope it decomposes before future generations are able to decipher the inky scrawlings.

The first was badly written, boring and very stupid.

I say don't torture yourself...

Sell it, but be sure to add a self destruct feature first so no more teenage girl minds can be corrupted by its bullcockery.

I would say, not unless you read the first. And I would not say, read the other three books out of politeness. Hell, even if it was another book that you weren't interested in, I would not recommend reading it out of politeness because a present is not supposed to be a punishment and if something meant to entertain you does not, then that is a problem with the present, not you.

^ Pretty much this
I'd advise not to read it - you could easily just look up a summary of it and that in itself would suffice.

Then again, if everyone's telling you not to, you'll probably want to. Also, after you have read it, you won't feel as though you are lying when you say how truly awful it is...

Don't do it, man. Don't do it if you have a trace of sanity in you, I have read plot recaps of these books and I simply have to say that yes, yes they are as asinine and ridiculous as the Internet portrays them as, you will either be utterly, completely disgusted and will feel violated afterwards, kind of like rape, or you will become a devoted fanboy utterly loyal to Meyer after reading them, and both outcomes are bad.

If you're strong enough for it, please do read it.
And let us know if it's as bad as it's made out to be.
Somebody has to sacrifice themselves for science.
Might as well be you. Good luck!

Read some of it. If you don't like it within a few dozen pages, donate to someone.

Haha, I love the hate. More people seem compelled to share their hate, than those that loved the books...wonder why that is?

Anyways, I'm going against the flow here. I read all the books and enjoyed them, Breaking Dawn was my favourite. The movie left little to be desired though. Seriously, read it if the rest of the series appeals to YOU rather than listening to the opinions of others.

Somebody already has. Someone female enough to delve deep into Twilight territory yet strong enough to remain sane. Her name....is Sarah Connor cleolinda. [http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/630150.html]

While the story is quite blah, I did enjoy the book and found several uses for my copy.

It's heavy, so it makes for a good doorstop or paperweight. You could throw it out a window to hit the annoying dog that goes on your lawn, but I hear some dog owners take offense to that.

It's full of pages--some with words--and each page makes for unique wrapping paper, scratch paper, or origami.

If you ever need to cut and paste a ransom note, this book is an excellent resource.

Oooh, how sparkly!
Sorry, I just can't let this go.

Is there like a screenshot of any sparkling vampires? From the movie? Or something?

EDIT: Thanks, The_Oracle, might look into that!

Oh, bad advice. My favourite series of all time, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, were terrible for the first hundred pages or so. Seriously, as great as the 12 books in the series I have read are, those first three chapters could have been renamed "A day in the life of a suicidely depressed leper" and it would have fit.

Seriously though, thanks for the advice guys. I think I'll give the book a skip.

Why would you read the fourth first?
I have read the books (yay for working in a young adult book store). I didn't find them quite as heinous as everyone makes them out to be (the key word here being "quite"), but they aren't good either. Also, the writing and plots go downhill from the first book, and the first wasn't exactly a well written book. The fourth book is just a WTF sort of moment the whole way through.

I'm going to do you a favor here.
Don't read the book.
Ask the person who gave you this so called "gift" for the receipt.

As I said, I got it as a gift. The person who gave me the gift forgot their reading glasses when they went to the bookstore, so based the purchase on the title of the book (big letters), and the picture on the cover.
