I have heard a few people giving a lot of priase the the song of ice and fire books. Are they really a must-read?

Also, Lovecraft seems to always come up. Where should I start with him.

Finally, the Midkemia books (Feist), Black Magician (Canavan) and Age of Five (Canavan) are really the sort of thing I'm looking for.

Night Angel Trilogy by Brent weeks
I motherfucking second this.
I'm third so.
Also if you read David Gemmell I recommend "Nights of Dark Renown" or "Dark Moon" as a single book and either the Rigante or Waylander series.

I'd also recommend The Quickening trilogy by Fiona Macintosh

I'm looking to buy a book. I need a recommendation. I read young adult fiction, specifically fantasy. Some of my favorite authors are Garth Nix, Trudi Canavan, Raymond E. Feist, Stephen Donaldson (Kind of heavy for me though), Rick Riordan and Darren Shan (Although I have slightly outgrown them), Eoin Colfer, and that's about it. The His Dark Materials trilogy was quite good and John Twelve Hawks is also... OK. I have read just about everything these authors have to offer, however, and I need a new book/series.

You should have a good idea of the kind of book I like from the above list. So, what would you recommend to me? Most of my book reading is the result of gifts given to me by a family member which start me off on an author/series which I then devour. I feel like I'm probably missing some really obvious/essential books which no fantasy geek should be without.

So, that's it. Oh, and make it fast. I want to get this book in, like, the next 30 minutes.
Noughts and Crosses is a good bet, the 4 books in the series are a really gripping plot, tied together by themes of racism, poverty and class. :)

EDIT: Seriously the first books goes something like this:

Chapter 1: Main character. Has leprosy. Hates the world. World hates him.
Chapter 2: Transported to a magical world where everything is beautiful his leprosy is miraculously healed, and the people practically worship him.
Chapter 3: He rapes the first person that has been nice to him in decades.
Chapter 4: Root hasn't read as he chucked this author insertion fantasy in the bin as it belongs.
Belongs in the Stephane Meyer pile.

Probably moot at this point, given the time limit the OP set, but I noticed nobody mentioned The Death Gate Cycle, by Weiss & Hickman, and I would be remiss if I let that one slide. Absolutely bloody fantastic fantasy that I first read when I was a kid, to this day they are my favorite fantasy novels ever and I re-read them every year or so.

Any Terry Pratchett except Monstrous Regiment and Shada.
Any Neil Gaiman (although Good Omens is probably still the best)
H.P. Lovecraft

or...grab some classic like H.G.Wells

Le Guin's Earthsea books are great, but the best bits are the peripheral short stories. the Xanth books are fun in a young adult way, just go into them knowing you'll outgrow them soon.

But seriously, check out Glen Cook's Black Company series.
