Book Recommendation

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley,
Only Forward by Michael Marshall Smith,
Watchmen by Alan Moore,
Vernon God Little DBC Pierre.

If you get the chance, read any or all of these books. Particularly 'Only Forward', since it's one of the best Sci-Fi books I've read since Hitchhikers Guide. Yes it really is that good.

cant blame you for not liking the sword of truth books. my brothers and my buddies like em, but i lost interest 1 book before the end of the series...

I like this thread. I read a lot and this is providing me with a good deal of books to look at.

Someone above mentioned Watchmen. It's the only comic book I've ever read, and it may stay that way, but it was absolutely phenomenal.

Also, I'm kind of surprised no one's mentioned Neal Stephenson. He's amazing. Start with Snow Crash, it's one of the best books I've ever read.

The Death Gate Cycle by Hickman and Weiss. Seven books of awesome.

Yeah those are really good.

The Belgariad and Mallorean by David Eddings are good.

Dresden Files and Aleran Codex by Jim Butcher

The Nightside novels by Simon R. Green

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan

Elantris and the Mistborn Trilogy, both by Brandon Sanderson.

Those are some of my favorites that I can think of at the moment.

In Sci-Fi would have to recommend anything by Isaac Asimov. Not just his novels but also his short stories. (Personal Favorite: The Last Question [http://www.multivax.com/last_question.html])

If you want more of a Sci-Fi comedy I would highly recomend The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Also I am in a Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror class. So my teacher has been giving us a lot of short stories to read. I haven't read much of their work but I would also recomend Ray Nelson (Eight O'Clock in the Morning [http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/academy/9412/8oclock.html]), Frederic Brown (Arena [http://arthursclassicnovels.com/arthurs/brown-f/arena10.html]) and Philip K. Dick. (Well, umm. . . he was insane (or something), is that not reason enough?)

If you haven't tried it, take a foray into Homer's "The Odyssey". I've been enjoying it as beautifully written, though the prose format makes it seem even more long-winded than it already is...

I was in Waterstones looking around and wondering where I could find the disc world series and then I remembered that it's the name of Terry Pratchet's series *facepalm*. I steered clear of them before because I dismissed them as wacky and surrealist nonsense but I'll give it a chance.

Reaper Man is good, I would have maybe recommended starting on something else as Reaper Man is a bit deeper into Pratchett's type of writing but I wouldn't be surprised if after you read it you go looking for more.

Someone mentioned Ian M. Banks' Culture novels. They are really, really, REALLY good sci-fi books. Almost finished the series, although they're a bit more loosely organised than that..
You probably don't need another discworld recommendation, but what the hey. Buy some.
If you're looking for some good old-fashioned Napoleonic warfare, try Dernard Cornwell's Sharpe books. If you like them there's enough to keep you busy for some time.
Try Jung Chang's Wild Swans too. It's depressing, but an engaging read. Since it's pretty much an autobiography it's also fairly educational.

And finally because someone mentioned the bible, The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Even if you already have strong views on religion it's worth reading, just because it might get you thinking.
