Considering all the positive comments about the PC version my conclusion is....

The game hates YOOOOOUUUUU! Blargh.
It worked just fine for me too.

I have not had any problems, but I agree that the scroll wheel should scroll text.
Yes, the game does in fact hate you...

Ya, the PC version is basically a console port, it kind of sucks.
oooh lulz, who would have guessed?

on-topic; I have it for PC, + the DLC, and it's awesome.

It can be frustrating, as I have experienced many of the problems you cite. If you have the most recent patch for the game, I can only say I am uncertain why it is crashing for you. Remember, it is very difficult to test a game on all the possible combinations of hardware and drivers that differ from PC to PC, and as this game was designed for (usually) standardized consoles that do not have that developmental hurdle, that is going to be one of the weak points in the PC version's design.

In short, if you got it all patched up, it just doesn't like your rig. I had the same problem with STALKER. Had to play on the highest difficulty because if you survived for more than five minutes together the game would crash. Had to keep dying and reloading sooner than that to keep playing- it was actually pretty fun, as I recall...

EDIT: I can't talk about multiplayer, because I just didn't bother.

I got borderlands for the pc for xmas and so far its doing everything it can to make me hate it. The interface is suprisingly clunky the mouse wheel doesnt scroll text, it seems to like crashing on start up and multiplayer seems to almost be an afterthought. When it actualy works the gameplay seems really good but it seems to really hate the players. Has anyone else with the pc version had this stuff or does the game really just hate my machine?
Well the scroll text is because it is a console port.
How is multiplayer an afterthought? yeah the port forwarding is a pain and doesnt have simple thing like showing ping, but the problems with it are because... it is a console port.
The mouse sensitivity is screwed, but im lucky enough i can fine tune my mouse DPI so it isnt so bad.
I do have some problems now and then with some graphic problems, and the game hates SLI, but other than that it works ok and Im having a ball with it XD
Id say multiplayer is an after thought since it doesnt seem like you can just drop into a game, you have to form a party before the fact, at least thats how it seems, I havent been playing it much because of the aformentioned crashing issue
Public games I think it is like that, but if your friended with someone they can join anytime they want with an invite (well atleast i know it wokrs like that in private games)

It's never crashed for me, and the only real problem I have ever had is that the mouse moves frustratingly slow in menus.

Yeah, the multiplayer sucks because it's Gamespy and so you have to open a ton of ports to get anything working correctly, but I use a program called GameRanger to play over LAN with my friends. It works just fine as long as the computer of whoever hosts the game can actually handle it.

...So, yeah, I don't have many problems with it. Most of it is probably on your end.

Great game, the multiplayer is such crap that words cannot express how horrible it is. I went in once, the lag was out of this world. I tried going in the other day, now I cant even get in anymore! Using gamespy over Ded. servers was a poor poor choice.

I know in the console version you can join people in game public and private(you need an invite in private though) so it might be a PC only thing if it actually doesn't allow you to.

I got it for christmas also, and I've been really enjoying it for the most part. I've had a few crashes as well, and a few pretty noticeable graphical glitches (sometimes the game seems to flicker in between day and night), but my only real fault has been the multiplayer.

I was under the impression that Borderlands was a co-op focused game, ala Left 4 Dead. This is apparently wrong, because the multiplayer is inexcusably broken. You have to manually open ports on your router to be able to host a game? Really? And the game won't even find all the servers unless you start and immediately quit single-player mode? It's a damn good thing the single-player is so good on it's own, because considering this apparently hasn't been fixed since release I don't think it'll be fixed anytime soon.

Oh, and it's also a rather sloppy PC port. You really have to press Start enter to open the main menu? Come on, now.

No problems over here.

Don't use gamespy for online, use Game Ranger. It actually works as opposed to ****ing Game Spy.

This was a game designed for console and so little has been done to make it PC user friendly that its practically a giant middle finger to anyone who buys it for anything but console.
It's even worse when you play it on the PC with a 360 controller.

You get some basic controls but things like scrolling are still done with the mouse.

You just answered your own question as to why multiplayer is an afterthought. They could have used Games for Windows or Steam, but they chose to use a program that was horrible ten years ago. And don't forget, there are enough console ports that actually work properly(Gears of War, Batman AA, Fallout3, X-Men Origins and yes, they have some problems but they're at least playable without major problems)

The reason or the ? is that the problems I listed are things you dont normally look for in a console game and can get away with it. So many things in the game make it obvious multiplayer isnt a 2nd thought, it just wasnt well thought through for the PC though. Look at the fact you can swap and use characters from multi- single, The way anyone can accept quests, no matter where the party is, the count down for changing areas (which can be cancelled easily), you can spawn 2 cars (what would be the point of that in single player), the way classes are balance to fill in the weaknesses for each other (even though a bit un-balanced when dualing) etc etc etc

yeah they could have done things better espically when putting it on PC, but seeing as the game seems more BUILT around playing it multiplayer, no way does it seem like a 2nd thought....

Whatever, just wash your hands.
well it seems like its possible to jump into a game but Ive had a really hard time connecting to ppl so Ive only gotten multi to work once. Its hard to beleave that after so many years of fps games on the pc they could mess one up this bad, I mean the gameplay is pretty good but there are all these little things like the dev team forgot what the input on a pc was and that the internet exists on a comp

I've got it on pc and personally its better than consoles, better graphics... only grip is quite long loading times.

had no problems with it so far, runs well on high graphics. not tried the multiplayer part of the game

In two words?

Gamespy lol.
yeah gamespy is a massive piece of shit, the only games Ive seen it on aside from borderlands have been games that dont expect people to actualy play them multi-player. Dont know what gearbox was thinking when they added it, even games for windows live would be better.
I have good memories from Neverwinter Nights. GameSpy worked flawlessly back then. And it still does, for NwN.
