I am gonna get this train wreck a rollin with the obvious comparisons to Fallout 3
They are both Wasteland FPS RPGs with some cool guns
Actually, Borderlands is an FPS RPG but Fallout 3 is an RPG FPS
Borderlands is an FPS at heart with lots of RPG elements. Your level matters, you will do quests for items and you change your character's colors
Fallout 3 is an RPG at heart with lots of FPS elements. You aim and shoot, you have some tricky run and gun sections and you will find some pretty cool boomsticks
Borderlands is as much an RPG and Fallout 3 is an FPS and vice-versa
Starting here I will use and standard issue review format to compare the two games
Visuals
F3: Nothing too special here, good graphics but not writting home about them
BO (yes haha BO): Stunning cel-shading, all because the original trailer was too frickin boring. Kudos
DING
F3:0 BO:1
Gameplay
F3: Not very much focus, mostly on story
BO: smooth shooting and funky guns just add to it
DING
F3:0 BO:2
New and Different
F3: VATS, Well implemented GURPS, you can actually do anything (as long as what you want to do is kill friendly citizens)
BO: 6 million + guns, xp per kill on screen stuff, cool RPG implementation
DING
F3:1 BO:2
Story
no explanation necessary
Borderlands was cool, but the new game + smells like a lack of content to me (was still awesome though)
DING
F3:2 BO:2
Due to the tie, I am bringing it to the menial "don't actually matter things"
Achievements, Publicity and Music
F3: You need to play the game like 3 times for all the achievements, boo
BO: All achievements fun and the special ones clever, "and they'll tell 2 friends" is well circulated with a fantastic matchmaking system
DING
F3:2 BO:3
F3: Not much really
BO: 2 of the greatest trailers I have ever seen and then the awesome claptrap things
DING
F3: 2 BO:4
F3: Nothing very notable
BO: Cage the Elephant and Champion as well as helpful combat music that always seems apropriate
DING
F3:2 BO:5
So my arbitrary win meter says that Borderlands wins
Borderlands had 3 major selling points all with warrants
1) "87 Bazillion guns"
The number of guns is truly awe-inspiring. They are unique and the special guns feel worth it
2) "4 player co-op"
OK, so Co-op isn't new but Borderlands does it better than any game... Every, except for maybe L4D
3) "FPS and RPG seamlessly combined"
They followed through. Unlike some FPS RPGs, when you beat the game, then go back to the beginning with your epic character, you actually find it laughably easy. Making your character unique is easy and if you make a boo-boo, you can fix it for a nominal fee
Conclusion: Borderlands is one of the best games of all time, let alone this season. It deserves GOtY more than anything I have seen. Buy it for what ever console you have and I promise it will be worth it
