Well, it didn't light the world on fire. It's only fun with other people in my opinion.

It's not fantastic. If you play by yourself, it's proably not for you. If you have plenty of friends with the game, then buy it. It can be a fun experience with friends.

Borderlands is a great game. So long as you're not going into it expecting a deep storyline or well developed narrative. It's a Grind-fest and I mean that in the best way possible.

It's important to remember that it's not really just a mindless shooter though. There are RPG elements and you will find many similarities with the older Dungeon Crawl style games. Get a mission (quest), head to a gate (cave) enter and start shooting everything you see (slay the beatsties) then pick up whatever loot happens to fall from their corpses or the gun cases (treasure chests) you happen to find during the mission. Then equip or sell the new items, level up when possible, rinse and repeat. Getting a new gun that is way better than what you have currently equiped is a very satisfying bit of fun, just like in Diablo or the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games.

If that sounds enjoyable, you'll love Borderlands. Or at least enjoy it enough to justify the cost of admission.

It's the only game I've ever got the Platinum trophy for, and that was purely single player. It's even better with mates (don't play with random people, that's rubbish).

The storyline is hilarious, but requires reading (which, as evidenced by this thread, may be too much to ask), and if you don't see the ending coming from a mile off, you're a moron*. This isn't a bad thing, though, because it's definitely worth a few playthroughs, and getting Zombie Island of Dr Ned and the Secret Armory of General Knoxx. Mad Moxxie's Underdome Riot isn't as good, but is still a laugh. I say get it.

*...
Seriously, people! I've said this so many times! You're looking for a box on the planet Pandora! What good can come of that!?

It had an amazingly fun multiplayer set up. Single player wise, it was still fun, just not as much as multiplayer. If you want to know about actually game content, *spoiler alert* you notice that there's only a small number of gun models, but thing are kept original by the fact that between color, damage, range, etc. there's alot of different possibilities, however i found myself finding an above average gun half way through and sticking with it. The missions start to seem oddly familiar after awhile, at least the side ones, but if you dont pay close attention you wont know the difference.
Never the less it still a really fun game

PS I highly suggest plugging your ipod in while play, No Rest For The Witched by Cage The Elephant ends with the opening cutscene and is replaced by a generic and at times unpleasent sound track, which for one area of Pandora sounds like they have a cow singing.

I'll describe it to you the same way I did to my roomie:

Add 2 parts Diablo (The random loot generator, the skill trees)
Add 1 part Halo (Voice actress and some sound FX, plus the UI feels like Halo)
Add cell shading (Not crazy cartoon style, just multiple levels of self-shadowing with no gradients)
Mix the F*CK out of it.

If you're not intrigued then pass on Borderlands. It's an interesting way to kill time, very pick-up and go solo, but it really shines as a multiplayer experience. And you can play SPLIT SCREEN.

I would strongly suggest you not get it. The gameplay is wholly uninteresting, and while there are millions of guns, they all act in about the same way. The entire thing boils down to grinding completely unoriginal quests in an attempt to unlock a weapon that is slightly better than the one you have now.

But then again, a lot of people love it, so maybe it's just me...

It's one of those games that's meant to be played split-screen co-op. The PC version is apparently terrible. If you have someone who is willing to share a couch for the entirety of the game, go nuts, otherwise it's just pretty good.
I wouldn't say terrible by any means. We did get a bit shafted in some ways, but it was still fun. Before they (supposedly) fixed it in a patch (waaaaay later than they should've), it was a ***** and a half for some people to get it working online, even forwarding ports manually, but my friends and I managed it, and I have a feeling having the full screen to myself and talking on Vent was a lot more fun than I'd have sharing it in split screen. It was also a pain in the ass to have to edit the config files manually to disable crap like auto-aim and mouse smoothing, but after sorting out all of that, it was at least entertaining in co-op (and significantly less so alone).

So yeah, not terrible on the PC, and I enjoyed it, but they botched it badly enough and took so long to fix things (and still haven't fixed others months later) that I'm not going to be buying any more of their games.

I personally love the game while playing with a friend or two. The splitscreen can get a little annoying because you have to pan the menus around but you get used to it and the variety of guns make for some hilarious moments.

There's not much going on in the story department, but it doesn't really matter because it still works very well. The gameplay works well and that's what matters. So if you have a friend to play splitscreen with, or multiple friends to play online (or LAN) then it makes it all the better.

I'd get it if it's less then £25 or whatever the equivalent value is wherever you are.
But you do need a friend to get the most out of it, really. SP gets a bit boring in Borderlands, I thought.

Would I be better off with Arkham Asylum instead? As that's another game I have my eye on, that or Alan Wake (although that isn't out yet...). I should point out that I like most kinds of game, I like a good story, but I also like mindless shooters every now and again.
And to answer you in some detail of sorts.

Arkham Asylum is a brilliant game and I found it a bit more fun then Borderlands. Mainly because A) You are Batman and B) You are Batman. Oh, and C)The Scarecrow parts are just amazing. It just doesn't have much re-playability in my eyes, though. Story mode has a few collectibles if you want to look them up, some good back story to it if you find the interview tapes with the inmates, a few of which will make you laugh, especially the Jokers. Borderlands on the other hand has seen me clock 6 days over 3 characters, have a blast with a friend in split screen co-op and, at times, made me laugh quite loudly. Also, the gun system which means you very rarely see the dame gun twice. Even though just today me and a friend had exactly the same shot-gun, down to stats and what not.

I'd say pick your buy based on the last game you got. Mindless shooter your last buy? Arkham Asylum. Story game was last buy? Borderlands.

But I'd personally take Batman: AA. It should be cheapish now, I think.
The irony is, I'd actually recomend the opposite, for basically the same reasons. Borderlands is a hillarious, brilliant time sink. Batman AA is a focused ~10 hour game. AA is awesome, but Borderlands has more replayability.
AA is a rent. Borderlands is a buy.

I was thinking about buying borderlands, I was wondering if it is anything special, or just like you know another game.
In my honest opinion, it's only fun when you have friends around. I've played it with a few friends on PS3 and had fun, and played it alone and was bored out of my mind.

I wouldn't buy it (and yet I did), the game reeks of a colorfully incomplete puzzle with missing pieces. I personally felt cheated as it was one of the few games I looked to with anticipation only to be smacked in the face.

Just another game imo. Don't get me wrong it's some good fun for the first playthrough or so, but it loses its touch. There are 4 different DLCs, which I think are like 20 bucks each.....yeah, hell no. I played just the regular non-DLC game.

The co-op isn't too great unless you have a good buddy sitting next to you, or a good buddy on xbox live or PSN, in which case it's baller. It will probably be forgotten within a year or so sadly.

Also, they really made a mistake by not caring about a story. There's not a single game in the world that has a more uninteresting story than this game, and that really takes away from the feel of the game. Overall, go rent it for a week or two and that should be fine.

If you like playing online, Fallout 3 or FPS's in general then it would come as a surprise if you didn't like Borderlands.

Setting
A desert planet by the name of Pandora. The environment is typically wide open wasteland and desert but you'll also find yourself roaming through caves, junkyards, towns and military bases.

Story
The story is very trivial but the theme is presented very well.

Gameplay
-There are various weapons classes; Pistols, Snipers, etc. Within each weapon class are many varied types of that weapon, and for each type, there's thousands of different variants with different stats. Weapons may also have some interesting effect like setting your target on fire, bullets bouncing off walls, regenerating ammo, etc.
-You can pick one of 4 different characters which have their own unique skills and excel in a certain area.
-Looting chests and enemy drops gets you better items and can be very satisfying and rewarding.
-Vehicles.
-Enemies are varied, interesting and require different strategies to defeat effectively.
-Levelling up enhances your abilities and you can choose which ability to enhance.

In the game you are given missions, completing them gets you rewards in the form of EXP and new items. However the missions are usually either: "Kill this thing" or "Collect these gun parts".

You can play Borderlands on Single Player but it's much more fun playing it online or with your friends.

Oh and DLC3 is the best bit of the whole game.

Borderlands can be a lot of fun. However I feel it is best played with actual people you know, preferably on split-screen.

But the game is best with the expansion if only to change up the scenery. You may wish to wait for the Game of the Year Edition to come out.

I found playing the game alone to be a repetitive experience which quickly devolves into endless looting and pointless leveling...

Funny, I was going to ask the same thing. It's going pretty cheap right now and I want a game to keep me occupied until Portal 2 and the next Fallout come out.

Rather than make a new thread for it I shall add my question to it:

Would I be better off with Arkham Asylum instead? As that's another game I have my eye on, that or Alan Wake (although that isn't out yet...). I should point out that I like most kinds of game, I like a good story, but I also like mindless shooters every now and again.
Arkham Asylum is in my opinion the better game, and much more fun to play alone. However, Borderlands is much longer and has more replayability.

Basically, they're both great, AA is a quick and amazing blast, but BL is a long and slow paced epic adventure.

If that makes any sense.

I thought it was a fun game, but its not much more that any other first person shooter you should probably rent it.
