I can't imagine it being a very big deal, a lot of shooters don't allow you to play as a female character for whatever reason. Can't see anything all that odd about it.

If the playable characters are all male due to the story, that's one thing. (And a whole separate issue...) But a game where you're supposed to be able to customize the characters, and there's no female option? Why hasn't this become inexcusable in this day and age?

Yeah, yeah, the budget. I think it says something interesting that dropping the option of female characters wasn't just on the table as a possible budget cut, it was apparently close to the top of the list of options.

What it boils down to is this.

"How many people will not buy it if there's only male options, compared to how many will not buy it if we cut a butt tonne of the customisations?"

The answer is, less.

I'll be honest, I'd prefer is they went the other way and only made female characters and said something like "It's an amazon nation of only chicks." and you have the same archetypes of Bulky meat head, "Average" Joe who's actually more like Adonis, Thin, wiry but still muscular guy but replaced with Bulky meathead chick (Like this one chick at the gym near my old house who would do pull ups for longer than I'd do cardio on the stationary bikes.) "Average" Jill who's actually more like a muscular swimsuit model (Think muscular femals comic book characters, like some versions of Mystique) and thin wiry chick, like a real female athlete, say a tennis player or runner in real life.

PS. Am a dude, but think that there's no ploblem with female leads. I'm surprised more games don't jump on it as a "gimmick" (which is how they'd see it) and accidentally lead to a more equal opportunity workplace for leading characters.

There's a character that comes to mind from Claymore for an example...
Grr only pic I could find.
She is 3 times as muscular as the other female characters yet doesn't look unattractive.
It can be done, and frankly would be a pretty good idea if done right.

This shows that the money is putting pressure on the devs to finish quickly, more than it shows sexism. Sorry no valve or blizz time for u splash damage.

The fact of the matter is they decided money is more important to them than representing both sexes. Take from that what you will. They wouldn't have to make new animations. Tons of games use the same exact animations for male and female characters, the publishers of this game for instance.

In response to one of the other comentors: Taking the stance that more gamers are male so game makers shouldn't consider female gamers is exactly the kind of attitude that will keep things that way.

And incredibly huge, muscular men don't look like ugly freaks? You make a heavily customisable female by having a large amount of variety in how they look. 'Looking good' shouldn't be a factor to adhere to 100%.

Does it even matter? Seriously?

Not including them because of time/tech/monetary restraints is perfectly reasonable, and if they were in the game no doubt there would those who think that females characters don't belong in it.

Like, I got nothing against female characters in games, but I just see it as such a futile issue that it shouldn't even warrant a thread.

I care a LITTLE bit about gender selection options when there is customization invloved. In Mass Effect 1 and 2, my Shepherd is male because I am male. I try to place myself in his shoes...I pretend it's me doing these things, not an avatar. In games like Metroid and Mirror's Edge, having a female lead doesn't bother me because that's the way the story was written. If there is no customization AT ALL, I don't care if the protagonist is male or female...as long as it's a good game.

I do feel a little bit confused about their choice though...the game industry is under constant fire for being male-dominated and male-catering. My friend's wife does want to play Brink, but she's a bit put off because she can't customize a woman.

Size customization options for female avatars don't have to be as extreme as their male counterparts. Being a "heavy" female in game could simply mean being stockier or huskier than other model options.

In summary, I hope they do add female avatars with a patch or something....because, for all of you who are excited about Brink...imagine a Brink version of this chick...

Bethesda are the publishers, not the developers.

Not to sound sexist or anything, but nobody seemed to complain when TF2 didn't have any female classes in it. Come to think of it, Crysis and CoD games have never had girls in them as playable characters, and nobody's been up in arms. Seems to me that the developers shot themselves in the foot by saying why there weren't going to be girls in it.

That said I've done my fair share of character modeling for classes, and I'll be honest its not a fast process, and it only gets longer when you've got to come up with a way to let the player customize what parts they wan on the slate. So I can sorta see why they made the choice, but frankly for a game of this scale it still doesn't seem like a good choice.

That is just a sign of a good developer, they know it's better to have a few polished mechanics then a bag full of dirt.

Gender really doesn't play a part here at all, it's simply a feature cut to keep the quality level high.

If this was a thread about other developers/games, I would be focusing on them. This thread, however, is about Brink, so I think it apt to focus solely on them.

You are correct though, this is a problem that reaches far wider than just a single game, genre or even medium.

In response to the OP, when we're discussing whether or not something is going to sell to a market which (in Brink's case specifically) is predominately teenage males, one needs to recognize that there is significantly more of an opportunity for success in having characters that are:
-Not ruined in comparison by having features the others don't
-Equally given development time

There are two things I feel worthy of discussion about class-based shooters:
-They are all in comparison to the one and only Team Fortress 2, which offers male characters who are a great deal more defined by their personality than their body. This is something that sets an example for all other games trying to jump onto the market, and it's a pretty big risk to try something unique that can quite easily lead to class imbalance, gender-specific arguing and discrimination~

-Monday Night Combat already tried gender differentiation, and it's a bit screwed.
The Assassin is abused and played incorrectly, and it can be seen in the things that the fanbase produces that people's approach to a game really shifts when there are breasts involved. It would be untrue for me to say that the market which I've mentioned isn't entirely swayable by their newly realized thought center.

Food for thought I guess, considering that most of these devs aren't going to change for the individuals. tl;dr on the article itself, lol

if this were a "go kill evil emperor" "save the kingdom" or anything like that i might care, but it's a pseudo realistic war game, and females have never served in equal number in any military ever as far as i know (last i heard the amazons were just a myth). You don't complain about it in call of duty because nobody ever leaked that there was a possibility of there being female characters, and if they never said they were dropping that choice for Brink, nobody would have imagined that it was ever there to begin with.

If you want something so unique then why not look away from the big titles? The industry isn't going to shift to the niche market, that's generally the act of small business in order to stay afloat (indie developers, for example).
