Religions are violent.
Books are violent.
Music is violent.
Art is violent.
Film/Television is violent.

Why is it that everyone wants to pony up on games? Makes no sense. I will be glad in 10 -15 years half these people will be dead and we won't have to deal with their bullshit anymore. Than maybe we can move on to hating something else, probably hologram sex sims or something newage like that.
Because Vidja games are new and apparently only Children play them. Hence we gotta protect all da Childrenz

I'm sorry if this is unpopular but come on people. You're really going to pretend that children aren't information sponges? That children don't imitate behavior all the time? That's how you learn to be a person. I teach 1st grade in an inner city school kids so 'at risk' that we have a police officer for our security guard most of the year.

Guess how many of my kids are talking about playing Saints Row 3? Most of them.

Yes, I love the game too, but I really don't like 5, 6, and 7 year olds playing it. Their parents are mostly high school drop-outs who do far worse things for their children then letting them play violent, sexual, and imitable games. I certainly don't think legislation is the way to stop these kids from playing these games. But let's stop pretending rough games don't get in to kids hands let's stop pretending it doesn't effect them in any way because you turned out alright.

...real life is violent.

Anyway, personally I think there are just some things that governments should stay the fuck out of and this is one of them. If people can't learn how to police themselves on certain things, like say what's appropriate or inappropriate for their kids, and must rely on the government to do it then we're really screwed.

I used to play serious sam. How the hell am I going to do that in real life?
Well clearly you're going to get your name changed to Kamikaze and run at people screaming and blow yourself up. Man that game really must have screwed you up if you didn't realize that!

He does not get to debate this until Parliament debates stopping people from watching sports. Watching sports has much more of a causal link to violence than videogames ever did. I have heard of soccer riots, but never videogame riots. We need to protect our children from the violent tenancies cause by watching sport like soccer. 'Will no-one think of the children?!'......

Because the "modern world" doesn't play video games apparently?
Considering my professor talked to me about Feral dps builds for an hour and a half a year ago, and he has been teaching advanced Logic for 28 years, I'm fairly certain that video games are very widespread.
It could be because all of your examples have been around for an extremely long time, while video games have not.
It'll be interesting to see what people think in 50 years.

"I am grateful to the Right Hon. Gentleman, and I know that this is an issue that he has pursued with vigor for some time. I cannot promise a debate next week...but in the meantime I will draw his concern to the attention of the Home Secretary."

Translated from parliamentspeak to English:

"I know that you have no desire to shut the fuck up about this issue, but we have more important things to discuss. I'm not going to waste anyone else's time on this, but will make a token effort to pass the message up the chain in a (probably futile) attempt to stem your incessant whining."

There's a number on the fucking box showing an age limit, and studies have proven that retailers are, for the most part, very good at enforcing age ratings.

END OF THE FUCKING PROBLEM.
This.
Keith Vaz is such a prat. We already have laws about age restricting products (as with films), he has no right to censor games for adults as well.

It's got to be the only time the Mail has actually supported a Labour MP (even one who is basically a reincarnated Mary Whitehouse), which is a tad hilarious.

I completely agree.

At a time when we have had a summer of riots in London, when the Euro looks likely to swallow us all, when the cuts to the budget are impacting everyone and unions are striking; let's have a pointless debate, the results of which will never be enacted before Xmas anyway, about how videogames makes kids EVIL!

A better time for a Xmas debate would be in the summer... whoops, almost forgot these spineless chickens take a 7-week holiday during the summer and then vote to claim back the time when they have to come back to stop the city riots.

He's using the same arguments people in the US have been using for years. Well, britain, it's your turn. The US has won it's video game freedom with it's supreme court decision. Now let's win one in parliament, eh?
Except all the violent games over here have a legally binding age rating which means anyone who buys it for a minor can be fined and/or arrested for it. One of these douchebags even held up GTA3 in the Houses of Parliament which has an 18 rating over here and claimed it was influencing his 10 year old. So he admitted publically that he'd broken the law. That's why videogame accusations never hold over here.

The BBFC was an independant body that simply decided what age rating a game warranted and if the content was extreme enough it would be refused classification. Games didn't need to be submitted but most smart developers did so that when little Timmy decided to copy Big Mike's whacky axe-wielding mayhem mission from 'Bludgeoning Death' the parents would be responsible or the store which sold it to them.

No Jack Thompson lawyers over here, they're too busy filing accident claims from people who slip on wet floors.

These new forms of media are warping the minds of our children and are simply vessels for the devil's influence! That is why we should ban rock music, I mean video games.

if the parents want to be fucking morons and buy their children inappropriate games with out checking what the content is then fuck them in their ignorant faces and I hope their kids grow up and steal their car, shout FUS RO DAH the cat and join the SAS and save the world from nuclear war/ invasion by russia and then beat them to death with a 3 foot wobbly dildo bat.

"Protecting children" is not a legitimate argument against any forms of free speech whatsoever. Information doesn't hurt kids. It's how they handle that information, which is entirely up to the parent. And exposure to some "bad" things isn't going to ruin a kid for life. Hell, I got into anything naughty and forbidden whenever I could as a kid. And I turned out just fine. Children are tougher and more adaptable than parents give them credit for being. Your little brat is gonna be just fine!
