Broaden my mind - recommend a game to me.

I've heard of Tales of Symphonia. It's supposed to be awesome and the shit! Which one do you recommend? the GC version is pretty out of the question, it's rare and reaaaaally expensive. But if you recommend it then I'll keep it in mind anyways

Tales of Symphonia is getting a PS3 release next year with both the original game, the extra content from the Japan exclusive PS2 version and the spin-off Dawn of the New World, which was released for the Wii.

Tales of The Abyss is a good game to start with because it got a relatively easy combat system. Tales of Graces F for PS3 got a slightly more complicated, but very fun combat system. Tales of Xillia is awesome and I play that whenever I got the time (still haven't had the time to complete it yet). That game is also getting a sequel which will be released next year.

Also, Professor Layton series. GREAT games, point and click puzzle games. There's some really great puzzles there. I remember being stuck with one for weeks before I finally got through it. The story is also quite decent and I love the animation style.

The Kingdom Hearts series is fantastic, and it's a good time to get into it, with a remake of the first game out currently and KH3 on the horizon.
Also, it's on PC, but Super House of Dead Ninjas is a great game which you can either play on Adult Swim for free, or buy it for 10 bucks on Steam with some extra features. It's not graphically intensive, so most computers can play it.

Ehh.. lots of things jumping out of the dark at you and loud *jumpy* noises made me quit and uninstall in the first 10 minutes. I'd rather the shallowness of guns than the shallowness of as many scary things as possible crammed into a game.

I disagree with you on the matter. The Cat Lady doesn't feature any monsters lurking in the darkness (unless you were being metaphorical and the monsters being inside the player him/herself and the darkness being something that might envelop you if you go through similar situations in real life as Ms Ashworth in the game). Game itself is more about thinking and understanding some of the worse aspect of man, not the least the mental states one might go through. The reason why the game is graphical at times is a way of putting emotion on paper, as it were. But that is just my take on it, people see the game differently.
I will continue with saying that I do of course respect your opinion of what you played of the game.

Disagree all you like, the game has jump-scares galore. That's a fact, go back and play the first few scenes. I really wish they hadn't taken that route, because it does sound there's a cerebral element I would have liked buried under all that shit.

Well, try to branch away from the Japanese games (though, yes, the ones you listed are good). The obvious choices would be games like Fallout 3, The Last of Us, Mass Effect, and maybe Saints Row for a bit of humor. Scribblenauts seems like it would be right up your alley based on the listed games, though I'm trying to stick to games that are different.

There are a lot of non AAA titles out there as well, though, and plenty of older games. The Longest Journey, To The Moon, Deponia, Braid, and Fez are quite good, though you may have already played some of them, since many of them are point-and-click. Also, if you haven't played The Walking Dead, then go play The Walking Dead.

Double Fine is great at making quirky games, and Tim Schafer used to make adventure games for Lucas Arts. Psychonauts i brilliant, and Brutal Legend is interesting.

I think the best game I can recommend is Shadow of the Colossus and Aiko. Everyone's heard of Colossus, but I felt that Aiko is FAR superior. Great puzzles, interesting combat, gorgeous visuals, and several very warm, heart felt moments. If you like Zelda, you will like this game. Recently re-released in HD.

I can't for the life of me find anything on this Aiko game you're talking about. Do you have any details/a link you can point me to?

As for the OP's question, it seems most of the games I can remember have already been mentioned, but I'll definitely put in another recommendation for the Professor Layton games, Bastion, Braid, Ratchet & Clank, Shadow of the Colossus, and Tales of the Abyss

If you don't already, I'd highly recommend paying attention to Steam's big sale periods (Christmas, summer, Thanksgiving are usually the big ones) A lot of games on my Steam profile come for indie games that seem interesting to me that are often on sale for around 3 dollars. You might end up finding something you like!

That's my bad, man. Typo. The name of the game is ICO. You can get the HD bundle with shadow of the collossus for about $20. You may be able to find it for the ps2, but it's more expensive, has bad cover art, and it's by itself. If you have a ps3 it's easy to find, or you can get the ps2 version of Amazon. It should also be available on PSN. The art style reminds me of Wind Waker or Journey, it's gorgeous. People talk about how TLoU and Bioshock Infinite have great side characters who don't feel like a burden, but ICO did this over a decade earlier. It's also the best example of telling a story through body language I've ever seen. It's very nuanced and subtle.

Hey, I have a few more I'd like to recommend:

Persona 3/4 - half school sim, half RPG, these games still have great stories, characters, and turn-based combat... though to some people it might be a bit slow.

Spec Ops: The Line - I'm a bit hesitant to recommend this, as it takes a... different look at war shooter games. It's worth a look if you like deconstructions, but be warned, you'll probably feel like crap afterwards.

Dust: an Elysian Tale - a beautiful-looking game with a great story and awesome action.

To an NDS owner who plays both RPGs and Point and Clicks, I think Infinite Space by Platinum games may be on your radar. A huge, arching space opera with oodles of interesting characters, as well as deep customisation options for the various ships that will come under your command, I don't think you could go far wrong. The thing I find that put most people off was the characterisation/action ratio, but I think your experience will make you more accustomed to the slower pace.

And besides, in my opinion this game could do with more love than it received anyway

If you want to try new things, why not give a new genre a shot? I can personally recommend X3: Reunion and it's successor X3: Terran Conflict. X4 is coming out in November and it looks positively amazing. They're all open world space exploration games where you fly your own ship around the galaxy being awesome.

On that note, the humble bundle weekly sale is the entire X series of games. I just picked them up today for like, six dollars.
