If you like Square's Final Fantasy games, then I'd suggest another one of their JRPG's, The World Ends With You. Its definitely a different experience as far JRPG's go, although if you regularly fumble with the DS's touch screen, then it might not be for you.

Hey y'all! I've gotten kind of bored of video games these past few years. I'm stuck in a place where I only buy and play old games that I've played a million times before. Guess I'm too narrow minded to try out new crap.

Well, I'd like to change that. And I'll need your help in order to do it.
I'd like for you to recommend a game that you think I'd enjoy. Or something that you enjoy a great deal.

The games I play regularly are: Final Fantasy series, Harvest moon, Resident evil, Mario, Zelda, point and click games (a lot of them) and...hmm. Heroes of might and magic I suppose.

So surprise me! What should I play, that will get out of this pit of repetition I'm in? Doesn't have to be a newly released game.

I own a NDS, Wii, PS3 and everything beneath that generation of consoles.

Captcha: Narrow-minded.
How the hell...
Well, try to branch away from the Japanese games (though, yes, the ones you listed are good). The obvious choices would be games like Fallout 3, The Last of Us, Mass Effect, and maybe Saints Row for a bit of humor. Scribblenauts seems like it would be right up your alley based on the listed games, though I'm trying to stick to games that are different.

There are a lot of non AAA titles out there as well, though, and plenty of older games. The Longest Journey, To The Moon, Deponia, Braid, and Fez are quite good, though you may have already played some of them, since many of them are point-and-click. Also, if you haven't played The Walking Dead, then go play The Walking Dead.

Double Fine is great at making quirky games, and Tim Schafer used to make adventure games for Lucas Arts. Psychonauts i brilliant, and Brutal Legend is interesting.

I think the best game I can recommend is Shadow of the Colossus and Aiko. Everyone's heard of Colossus, but I felt that Aiko is FAR superior. Great puzzles, interesting combat, gorgeous visuals, and several very warm, heart felt moments. If you like Zelda, you will like this game. Recently re-released in HD.

Can we call VNs games?

Whatever, fuck it, You want to follow the white rabbit down the hole into wonderland where your morality and perception of reality are questioned

Saya No Uta

Aside from that, Persona, Fallout 3/NV and XCOM EU and the soon XCOM EW... that's all I really recommend*.

I love the new XCOM

*That's not made by Nintendo. If you've overlooked Ocarina of Time, go get a 3ds and buy that man.

I'm just going to list some that I think you should play, because personal thoughts trump trying to outdo others and trying to suggest something different.

Dark Souls is a JRPG that apes Western fantasy, if I'm going to steal Yahtzee's words. Quite possibly my personal favorite due to the unforgiving nature, but I acknowledge it's not for everyone. Give it a go and see if it's your fancy.

Shadow of the Colossus appealed to my fascination with size and scope in a video game and by god damn does it do it well. I highly recommend grabbing this and Ico for PS3, even though I don't recommend Ico as it felt a bit boring to me.

Cave Story is a Metriodvania side scrolling shooter that is really damn good. It's one of the few games that you best go into blind, even though spoilers won't really deteriorate your experience with the game. It is called one of the greatest indie games of all time, so do give it a shot.

Journey is what happens when you take the Hero's Journey, adapt it to video game form in its purist state, and force you to be in awe the whole time. Highly highly recommended, even though the replay value isn't there. But trust me, that's not what you're playing it for.

Try those and see if you enjoy them. All except Cave Story are on the PS3, and Cave Story is on PC, Wii, and the 3DS. I highly recommend grabbing the + edition though, as it's a good price for the de facto game edition. It's five USD on Steam if I remember correctly.

You'd probably like Sam & Max if you enjoy point and click adventure games. They're difficult so don't feel ashamed to pop open a guide but they have a fantastic sense of humor. Sadly they are on a Pc but you shouldn't need anything super high end to run them.

For consoles if you like shooters I may recommend an old classic, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I liked this game to the point where I got it on ps3 then my pc recently.

I would also, quite possibly more than any other game ever recommend Timesplitters: Future Perfect. This has got to be my favorite game of all time (hence the profile picture). Even if you don't like shooters there will be something in this game to enjoy. Even my friend who doesn't like or play shooting games found it enjoyable (as there are non-shooting modes) and eventually started liking the shooting mechanics.

Behold its glory in one of my favorite reviews

I would also suggest the Batman: Arkham games. They're really great.

I've heard of Tales of Symphonia. It's supposed to be awesome and the shit! Which one do you recommend? the GC version is pretty out of the question, it's rare and reaaaaally expensive. But if you recommend it then I'll keep it in mind anyways
Tales of Symphonia is getting a PS3 release next year with both the original game, the extra content from the Japan exclusive PS2 version and the spin-off Dawn of the New World, which was released for the Wii.

Tales of The Abyss is a good game to start with because it got a relatively easy combat system. Tales of Graces F for PS3 got a slightly more complicated, but very fun combat system. Tales of Xillia is awesome and I play that whenever I got the time (still haven't had the time to complete it yet). That game is also getting a sequel which will be released next year.

Also, Professor Layton series. GREAT games, point and click puzzle games. There's some really great puzzles there. I remember being stuck with one for weeks before I finally got through it. The story is also quite decent and I love the animation style.

The Kingdom Hearts series is fantastic, and it's a good time to get into it, with a remake of the first game out currently and KH3 on the horizon.
Also, it's on PC, but Super House of Dead Ninjas is a great game which you can either play on Adult Swim for free, or buy it for 10 bucks on Steam with some extra features. It's not graphically intensive, so most computers can play it.

Want a game that goes deeper than mere shallowness of guns?
Want a game that may or may not emotionally rock you?

I give you, The Cat Lady. http://www.gog.com/game/the_cat_lady

My personal GOTY from 2012. All praise to The Walking Dead for sure, but not even Clementine gave me this much emotional feelings. Sadness, happiness and horror beyond your imaginations!
Ehh.. lots of things jumping out of the dark at you and loud *jumpy* noises made me quit and uninstall in the first 10 minutes. I'd rather the shallowness of guns than the shallowness of as many scary things as possible crammed into a game.
I disagree with you on the matter. The Cat Lady doesn't feature any monsters lurking in the darkness (unless you were being metaphorical and the monsters being inside the player him/herself and the darkness being something that might envelop you if you go through similar situations in real life as Ms Ashworth in the game). Game itself is more about thinking and understanding some of the worse aspect of man, not the least the mental states one might go through. The reason why the game is graphical at times is a way of putting emotion on paper, as it were. But that is just my take on it, people see the game differently.
I will continue with saying that I do of course respect your opinion of what you played of the game.

Disagree all you like, the game has jump-scares galore. That's a fact, go back and play the first few scenes. I really wish they hadn't taken that route, because it does sound there's a cerebral element I would have liked buried under all that shit.

I can't for the life of me find anything on this Aiko game you're talking about. Do you have any details/a link you can point me to?

As for the OP's question, it seems most of the games I can remember have already been mentioned, but I'll definitely put in another recommendation for the Professor Layton games, Bastion, Braid, Ratchet & Clank, Shadow of the Colossus, and Tales of the Abyss

If you don't already, I'd highly recommend paying attention to Steam's big sale periods (Christmas, summer, Thanksgiving are usually the big ones) A lot of games on my Steam profile come for indie games that seem interesting to me that are often on sale for around 3 dollars. You might end up finding something you like!

...and now to go replay all the great games people have mentioned in this topic.

That's my bad, man. Typo. The name of the game is ICO. You can get the HD bundle with shadow of the collossus for about $20. You may be able to find it for the ps2, but it's more expensive, has bad cover art, and it's by itself. If you have a ps3 it's easy to find, or you can get the ps2 version of Amazon. It should also be available on PSN. The art style reminds me of Wind Waker or Journey, it's gorgeous. People talk about how TLoU and Bioshock Infinite have great side characters who don't feel like a burden, but ICO did this over a decade earlier. It's also the best example of telling a story through body language I've ever seen. It's very nuanced and subtle.

Hey, I have a few more I'd like to recommend:

Persona 3/4 - half school sim, half RPG, these games still have great stories, characters, and turn-based combat... though to some people it might be a bit slow.

Spec Ops: The Line - I'm a bit hesitant to recommend this, as it takes a... different look at war shooter games. It's worth a look if you like deconstructions, but be warned, you'll probably feel like crap afterwards.

Dust: an Elysian Tale - a beautiful-looking game with a great story and awesome action.

Tales of series on both Wii (GameCube) and PS was already mentioned.
So those.

Then for the Wii I'd also get
Metroid Prime (trilogy)
The Last Story
Xenoblade Chronicles

I only skimmed through the first page but I'll leave it short this time.

If there's any special genre you'd like to try out (mainly for the Wii) then feel free to ask if I have reccomendations :D

Also for the PC: Warcraft III

To an NDS owner who plays both RPGs and Point and Clicks, I think Infinite Space by Platinum games may be on your radar. A huge, arching space opera with oodles of interesting characters, as well as deep customisation options for the various ships that will come under your command, I don't think you could go far wrong. The thing I find that put most people off was the characterisation/action ratio, but I think your experience will make you more accustomed to the slower pace.

And besides, in my opinion this game could do with more love than it received anyway :)

If you want to try new things, why not give a new genre a shot? I can personally recommend X3: Reunion and it's successor X3: Terran Conflict. X4 is coming out in November and it looks positively amazing. They're all open world space exploration games where you fly your own ship around the galaxy being awesome.
On that note, the humble bundle weekly sale is the entire X series of games. I just picked them up today for like, six dollars.

https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly

I'm enjoying it, even if it has taken me hours to figure out the most basic ideas.
Thank you for tricking me into throwing ten bucks into my computer. XD
