[HEADING=1]Chapter 1: Rendezvous at Omega I[/HEADING]

Alexis stood pacing the length of the lounge deck when the crew emerged from their posts for the announced meeting. He motioned for them to sit down, a troubled expression on his face. The upperdeck of the Sakkara was easily the least cluttered as it basically housed the crew's living quarters and a handful of storage room, as such the crew often made use of the space to hold meetings or on special occasions or long haul trips, to hold indoor games. It was quite clear to the crew, that what was about to unfold today was no jovial matter.

"Gentleman, lady" he began, "I have troubling news that has just come to my attention. This might have a connection with the UPD cruiser that we are about to encounter with" he dug his hand into his pocket and produced a small circular chip. "A video log that came through to me on a secure channel a few hours ago. I think you all should see this". Alexis, walked over to the television screen and inserted the chip within its housing compartment.

Static burst through the viewer. Suddenly the interference disappeared and the face of a middle aged man wearing glasses appeared on the screen. He was dressed in normal civilian clothes and he had a small metal pin in the shape of a phoenix pinned to his T-shirt. There was a flicker on the screen as the man began to speak

Captain Alexis!,
I am captain Revelli of the freelance freighter, Indigo Maru, we haven't met personally but we are acquainted through a close personal friend of mine and yours as well, I believe. Captain Armstrong of the freighter, Bragi, spoke quite highly of you and your crew on many an occasion. It would saddened you then, to learn that as of 0800 hours yesterday, his vessle the Bragi, was reported on UPD communication channels as destroyed with all hands. We thought it was a twisted joke played by the UPD at the time, but no other freelance craft has spotted the Bragi, within any of the known sectors in over 24 hours. Her last known destination was a UPD cruiser called the ,Titan, several of us have tried making communication with the vessel but they refuse to acknowledge that they docked with the Bragi. According to recent intercepted UPD transmissions, they have listed the Bragi as "destroyed by unknown causes" during a routine space maneuver.

Captain, we find this highly unlikely, the crew of the
Bragi
, were a very diligent and experienced crew, they were one of the oldest vessels serving under the Freelancer creed. Though we have no evidence, it is becoming apparent that the UPD, either directly or indirectly had something to do with it's destruction and they are now covering it up. I received an encrypted transmission from the Bragi, before it dropped out of communication range. The message was brief. Captain Armstrong, stated that he was working with the UPD on a project and if something were to happen to him or his crew that I was to contact the captain of the Sakkara. The message went on to say that he hoped the Sakkara and her crew would have better luck than he did. That was all.

Captain, it has been more than 24 hours, and I am certain that Armstrong and his crew have fallen into grave danger. I do not know what he is referring to when he speaks about a "UPD Project", it is clear though that he expects a similar fate to befall you and your crew, hence the wishing of good fortune. As a fellow captain, I urge you caution. The sectors across the known rim are now abuzz with rumors that the UPD are cleansing the galaxy of Freelancers. Whatever the case may be, I ask that you, if possible keep an eye and ear out for Armstrong or his ship, it could be that they are still alive. Alas, if they are truely dead, then I urge that we conduct a full investigation about the matter.

Gods speed Alexis, may you and your crew stay safe, and, if your travels permit it, look for our friends on the
Bragi
.

-Captain Revelli Out!

The video recording ended.

Alexis turned to face his crew. "So!" he began. "Looks like this isn't a routine inspection after all. It's too much of a coincidence. The Bragi begins work for the UPD and then suddenly they go off the maps and a couple hours later we are being hailed by the UPD... Something is rotten here and it reeks of UPD propaganda". He stopped pacing long enough to sit down across from everyone.

"Captain Johnna Armstrong was a close friend of mine, we both served in the unification wars to form the Trade Coalition. He was a good man. If he and his crew died, conducting a UPD mission, then it is our duty to make sure that they are honored as such, and not left for obscurity under UPD censorship acts, as well as to determine the cause of their demise will be our primary concern. Remember nothing is confirmed yet, so they could very well be still alive, if so then their rescue is of utmost importance to us. Either way, I can guarantee that all our answers lie within the UPD ship and there will find out whats happening" Alexis got up and pulled out his automatic pistol from the cupboard.

"Remember, stay armed at all time, when we dock with the Thantos, do not show aggression, we don't need to give them a reason to shoot us, but be vigilant at all times. Don't stray too far into their ship, god knows we might have to make a hasty departure" he paused as he loaded up the weapon with ammunition.

"That's all guys!. Suit up and lock and load" he had barely spoken those words when a series of alarms rang out from the cockpit.

PROXIMITY ALERT!
PROXIMITY ALERT!

"That's the sensors, looks like we have company in this quadrant!" Roach replied in response to the alarm.

"Three guesses to who they might be!" Alexis retorted. "Look sharp people, action stations everyone!. Roach, take us out of docking position and maintain standard orbit. If we are hailed by the cruiser, inform them that we will comply and dock with the ship. Extra, have the warp core ready, in case this goes south. Issaria, maintain weapons control. Everyone else, standby for boarding ".

"Yes sir!" Issaria said as she ran towards the weapons controls i hope i don't get that wish of mine fullfilled after checking up the weapons she radioed to the captain "all weapons are still ready to fire if need be"

Marcus sat agape throughout the video log. What happened to the Bragi and her crew?. What did the UPD send those poor souls to do?. How did they die?. He shook his head as if coming out of a dream when the proximity alarms went off. He looked at the captain and back at Roach, a worried looked passed over his face. They are here!

The captain issued his orders and the crew dispatched to their respective stations. Marcus bolted to his room and grabbed his shotgun, Sally. "I'll bring you along, just in case!" he said out aloud as he loaded the weapon shells. With a snap of the wrist, Marcus had the weapon armed and ready.

Sensing the uncertain future, he moved to the medical bay to find Jamie.

Attention crew of the Sakkara, please cease flying immediately and board the Thantos. You will be met by many armed guards, as well as the captain and a very high powered official. Please do not try anything violent or we will have to engage. This is a routine inspection nothing more.

Thank You.

"Alright Walter, lets go." Mike walked over to the admiral, "Sir, the Sakkara should be boarding any moment now. You should come to the docking bay to meet them there."

Roach had already grabbed his revolver that he had kept next to his bed. He loaded in a full ammo round before tucking it in to his holster that was hidden under his T-shirt. "Alright then, boys and girls!" he said as he clambered back into his seat and re-initiated the navigational computers, "standby to depart Omega space station".

Roach flipped a few switches and the ever familiar hum of the ships engines, grew louder and louder. Freighter Sakkara!, thank you for your visit. Disengaging docking clamps. Have a safe journey the automated voice of the space station filled the cockpit once again. The ship slowly rocked in its position as the claps retracted, the Sakkara was now floating freely in space. Roach grabbed the steering column and pressed a button, instantly there was a muffled hiss that could be heard as the reverse thrusters fired. Through the window the space station seemed to move backward as the Sakkara exited from the docking bay. Once they were a safe distance away Roach disengaged the reverse thrusters and pushed a lever forward. The engines roared to life as the craft lurched forward and angled to one side. Soon, the craft had cleared the space station zone and was heading for a standard orbit trajectory around the planet.

Roach checked his mid range scanners to confirm their proximity alert and sure enough, just a few miles away a large and foreboding blip was present, moving in an interception course with the Sakkara. He was about to press the intercom to speak to the captain when a transmission came through.

Attention crew of the Sakkara, please cease flying immediately and board the Thantos. You will be met by many armed guards, as well as the captain and a very high powered official. Please do not try anything violent or we will have to engage. This is a routine inspection nothing more.

Thank You.

Roach, raised an eyebrow. "They sure aren't the most friendliest of people now are they?" he asked Issaria who was monitoring the weapon control systems.

UPD crusier Thantos, this is the Sakkara. We acknowledge your transmission. Our captain has words with you and any other commanding officers on board as well. As such, know that there are many armed personnel on board this vessle. Should you try anything violent, we'll be outta here faster than you can blink an eye. Sakkara out. Roach grinned as he powered down the engines to idle. "That should keep them guessing" he muttered loudly.
Soon, a large cruiser came into view, as it drew closer Roach could see the UPD markings on the side of the ship. Below the main bow of the ship, pained across in white were the words, Thantos.

Roach skillfully maneuvered the ship around to the port side of the cruiser, where he spotted the docking bay doors open. He glanced one last time at the large guns and missile pods that lined the length of the big UPD cruiser, with a sigh he shook his head and aimed the nose of the Sakkara into the abyss that had opened up. With a nervous glance at his instrumentation, he increased the engine power to push the ship forward and into the Thantos's docking bay. Once inside he maneuvered into a landing area and brought the craft down to a gentle and smooth vertical landing. A minute passed before he cut the engines.

"Ladies and Gentleman!" he spoke into the intercom finally. "The Sakkara has landed".

Extra had just finished taking the Warp Core off of standby when Roach disengaged the clamps. He then ran to his bunk and grabbed his gun, loaded it and stashed it in his jump-suit, just as the Sakkara landed. My hearts beating like crazy, please just let this be a regular inspection. He moved up to the ship's exit to await the rest of the crew.

Mike began walking toward the docking bay, the Sakkara had landed and the admiral was following suite.

"Walter, lets go, the Sakkara has landed." he said into his microphone, "Sir, what do we plan to do here? Are there specific instructions for me?"

Walter followed behind Mike, making sure he could get to his gun if he needed it. Occasionally in situations like these, the crew would make a desperate attack. It never worked, but it never hurt to be ready for anything. "Lead on" Walter said.

"Be prepared for anything here but don't look for hospitality, it's the UPD, they sold their souls ages ago" Alexis said bitterly to his crew as they gathered in the airlock.

Normalizing air pressure, standby!. The ships computer began to pressurize the internal chambers of the air lock with that of the outside. A few minutes passed and a green light suddenly flashed on the outer doorway, captain Alexis pressed a button and the door slid open sideways and a ramp extended outwards. He subtly checked for his pistol before turning to his crew. "Look lively people!" he muttered under his breath before stepping out.

The deck of the Thantos was a cluster of activity. Landing crews wearing bright overalls ran to and fro carrying various equipment and charts. Men and women wearing UPD uniforms made their rounds along the deck talking in hush tones. Alexis noted the wide range of cargo and military ships that were berthed within this monstrous cruiser's hull. His eyes suddenly fell on three approaching figures. One of them was not dressed in a standard UPD uniform, the other was dressed in UPD uniform and was clearly in charge of the situation as he ordered men about him, the last walked with a supreme air of authority, he had an admiral star pinned to his chest.

"I am Captain Alexis of the Sakkara" he said turning to the approaching figures. "and may I ask, what is the reason for this intrusion?"

"I am Admiral Troy" the senior officer began before anyone else could get a word in. "And I have a business proposition for you and your crew. Come, let the good captain show us to his meeting room. We shall talk there" he paused seeing the apprehension on the crew.

"Do not worry, no harm will come to you or your ship, Captain!, I have personal orders to execute anyone that circumvents my will." he turned around to walk away, "Oh!, where are my manners?" he paused again with a smile.
"This is Captain Mike, of the Thantos" he said pointing to the man beside him, "and that is Specialist Walter" he pointed to the silent agent on his left.

"Now, if you would follow Captain Mike to his meeting room, we shall answer all the questions that you undoubtedly have" he extended his arm to lead the way. "Captain Mike, make ready your meeting room!. We have an important day ahead of us!" he suddenly turned to Walter. "You too!" he whispered, "you might want to hear what I have to say!"

A sense of deep dread came over Extra. An offer? Just like in the message, I can't believe this.

Extra leaned over to Marcus and whispered " This is bad, did you see that guy who was with the captain and the admiral? They called him a specialist right? Doesn't that usually mean government sponsored sadist?"

[I am going to say he doesn't always wear the helmet, it seems odd for him to be wearing the helmet.]

Mike said nothing, his face was emotionless, he chose not to shake the hand of the Sakkara captain. He knew the type, staying under the radar, trying to undermine authority, not a good captain.

He began swiftly walking toward the meeting room, saying nothing still. He opened the door to the meeting room and let the admiral and Walter in first, he then followed, cutting off Alexis.

Marcus nodded at Extra. "I hear they play the role of judge, jury and executioner for the UPD. Who knows what they really do though?. He doesn't even have a smile on his face" he commented, staring at the specialist. "Gives me the heeby jeebies just looking at him"

The group followed the captain of the cruiser to the meeting room. Marcus recalled Mike's cold reaction to their presence. What's his problem? he wondered aloud.

"I don't think he likes us or our captain too much" Marcus whispered through the corner of his mouth. "Makes you wonder, if he really wants us on his ship. Or does he really know what's going on?"

Meeting Room, Deck 4. Thantos

Crew of the Sakkara and Senior officers of the Thantos

Alexis was in no mood for pleasantries nor did he care for the attitude from the Captain of the Thantos, years of UPD encounters has thought him not to concern himself with appeasing UPD officials. Still he could not shake the feeling of dread as he walked the halls, deep within a UPD heavy cruiser. He felt trapped but there appeared to be little choice but to hear the Admiral out. At least, it might shed some light about the status of the Bragi and her crew, Alexis reasoned. It did seem that they too were heading down the same slop that the Bragi did.

Alexis motioned for his crew to follow. "Stick together, whatever has to be said is for all of us" he turned to face the Admiral and nodded, "We agreed to this meeting, but it doesn't mean we will agree to all your terms and condition that you will undoubtedly impose". The admiral nodded in turn. "You may keep your weapons with you, but it will have little effect on what I have to say". They walked along a narrow metallic corridor for a few minutes, led by Captain Mike before entering a large room containing a solid oak desk and several chairs. Alexis noted as he was cut off from entering the meeting that Captain Mike at least, had a personal grudge against him.

With a shrug, he made his way inside followed by Extra, Roach, Issaria, Marcus and Jamie. The Admiral and the Captain sat side by side, the Specialist cautiously entered the room before seating at a far end.

"This meeting has been a Priority 1 event for UPD fleet command for quite some time now. It must be said that very few within the UPD itself knows that this meeting is occurring or knows of its intent. I also have to point out that, even I, a senior Admiral of the UPD fleets, have been briefed with very little, aside from what I am about to share with you" he paused to look at everyone seated before him. "The information I am about to give you is highly confidential and the contents must not be passed on to ears beyond this room. This includes you, Mike and Walter too!. Regardless of your superiors order's, this comes from the very top of UPD High Command. You have not been informed of this before due to its classified nature. This is new information to everyone here, I myself was debriefed of this a few hours ago.". Admiral Troy reached into his briefcase and pulled out an old fashioned file.

"Gentleman" he began, "You may all be aware of our galaxies borders, it has been in existence since time first began. As we grew in power and made progress in the fields of science and technology and discovered spacefaring capabilities, we changes those boarders to suit our needs. Today we have our Core regions and the Outer Rim, pleasantly divided by the Aether belt. Over the years, few have seen reason to venture beyond the known and charted regions of space. With no known resources or lifeforms out in the expanse, the UPD nor the Coalition thought much about the great beyond. The Freelancers themselves, hearing no reports of habitable planets and seeing no profit to be made, avoided the areas beyond the Outer Rim completely. Both the UPD and the Trade Coalition sent independent probes and reconnaissance drones to the great beyond, for curiosities sake or for own personal reasons and we discovered the Helios belt. What we now define as the edge of our galaxy, the Helios belt, is a tangled mass barrier consisting of ice, rock, dust and other materials. The debris serve as a cosmic barrier for spacecrafts for ages and only a handful of probes managed to jump through. The data brought back from them was less than promising. All we got were readings of further space and a few E class planets, none suited for human habitation or capable of producing resources vital for our economies. So we stopped out exploration, and turned to managing our own regions of space.

Nine years ago, after much debate, the UPD decided that the Helios Belt and the regions beyond warranted a closer inspection, but by a manned vessel this time. The problem we faced at the time was that the thick layer of dust, rock and ice present in the belt, acted as a conduit for magnetic radiation, making a blind Warp jump through the belt very dangerous. Computer simulations showed that any vessel, despite the size, that was attempting to cross the barrier, would be bombarded with intense magnetic radiation which would effectively alter the ships Warp path and so the vessel would emerge on the other side, dangerously off course or worse, inside another planet. Our only alternative was to cross the barrier at subwarp speeds, which could take months to accomplish. And accomplish we did, after eight years of research our remote probes crossed the barrier at subwarp and it also managed to isolate a region in the belt showing low magnetic interference. The called it, the 'free zone' and simulations showed that it was the path of least resistance for a Warp jump.

Confident in our knowledge, we began construction of a pure science vessel that was capable of Warping beyond the Helios belt, via the 'free zone' and studying the elements of the next galaxy. We called the ship the Briony, it had a full crew complement of 7000 officers and was laden with scientific testing equipment. It was no bigger than this very vessel. Her maiden voyage occurred on the 10th of this month, year 2288; five days ago, to be exact. Initial reports were more than successful, the ship Warped through the belt and emerged beyond intact. It dawned on us then, that we had entered the pages of history for being the first to launch a manned vessel beyond the Helios belt. Data began pouring in, we became bolder and more adventurous, we threw caution to the wind. We ordered the Briony to do a perimeter sweep across the belt. The results were fascination, we discovered over 13 planets in the system and we hungered for more detailed information. We began drawing star charts for the sector.

Three days ago, we ordered the ship to explore a sector that was unknown to us, we had dubbed it, sector 13. Our scientists presumed that judging from the distance to the local star, that an M-Class planet could exist in that region. We received a garble transmission a few hours later but it was clear from the ships transponder that the Briony had entered sector 13, we attributed the poor transmission quality to the magnetic interference from the Helios belt itself. Then suddenly, we lost the transponder signal with the vessel. We thought initially that it was a solar flare or a cosmic storm in the region that was interfering with the signal but the Briony's transponder never came online again. We waited for a few hours, expecting it to be a technical difficulty but we could not establish a communication channel with the ship nor did it's transponder activate. We launched remote probes to the belt, trying to see if we could pick up the transponder signal from there, but we could not detect one, nor could we detect a distress signal or an emergency beacon either. It was like the ship just disappeared. Our probes ventured in, but since they lack a Warp core, only a few managed to make it across undamaged and transmit a usable signal. We looked for cosmic anomalies, such as a black hole or a wormhole to explain the disappearance of the Briony, but, we could not detect one. We set the probes to look for traces of dark matter and plasma, in case the ship broke apart, the fuel from the engines would have leaked out and it would give us a clue to its fate, but we couldn't find any traces of that either.

UPD Fleet Command was visibly upset, and demanded a full investigation. So, I was-" Admiral Troy suddenly paused as a series of beeps sounded from his briefcase. He glanced at his PDA, "I am sorry, I have something I need to attend to...I'll be back in a moment to resume my debrief" he said before excusing himself from the room.

"Feel free to get to know each other!" he called out as he left.

Damn..shit just got real!

Roach looked around the table where a deathly silence had settled in after the Admiral's departure. "So, how you guys doing?" he asked casually to Captain Mike and Walter.
"Bet you these guys must be a barrel o' laughs" he whispered to Alexis. "I don't like where the Admiral is taking this conversation. I have a feeling we'll end up biting more than we can chew and be another name on a UPD mission casualty list".

"Christ, now we are hiring low level Freelancers to do our dirty work? Whats next, women in the engine room?!" Mike scratched the back of his head and look at the crew of the Sakkara, "God damn freelancers."

Jamie turned to Roache's comment. This was starting to become serious. They had to play it carefully otherwise this whole thing could backfire.

I never liked getting in line with the UPD anyway but this, this just seems like it is going to go wrong. As if the inevitable was going to be something to our disadvantage. This was bad.

Jamie scratched his forehead then. The headache was getting worse, and he had left his medicine on the ship. He was really starting to tire of the headache now.

"Holy Fuck!" Marcus blurted out. "An entire ship, 7000 souls on board just disappeared?" he shook his head. "I've heard tales as a kid, my pappy used to tell them to me, tales of a legend that lives at the edge of this galaxy. A great beast, featureless and nameless, that guards the space beyond our boarders and any that step into his domain will be eaten up whole. The tales say that he would eat whole stars and destroy planets at will" he looked around nervously, "you don't think the tales are true do you?. I mean, there was no sign of the Briony right?. No evidence to say it exploded in space, no distress beacon, no space anomalies,.."

"what else could it be?"

"Alright!, how about we all calm down for a second" Alexis chimed in. "Marcus" he turned to the security officer "There is no such entity in this or any universe, if there was we would have heard about it or seen it as scientific fact by now. What it is, is just a fable, now pull your self together!". Looking at the rest of the crew he said, "let's not begin our speculation just yet. We'll let the Admiral finish his debrief and then we'll see how all this ties in with us". Looking at Mike, Alexis felt that whatever was upsetting him should be resolved while he had the chance. "I get that you don't like our presence here, to be honest, we do not wish to be here either. So, unless you have a personal issue with me or my crew I suggest that we keep our mutual dislike for each other separate from the issue at hand. We Freelancers operate under a simple creed, we serve the galaxy and her citizens, we don't have fancy ranks or superior commanders, we are free men. If you have a problem with that then I suggest a long walk off a short airlock!" Alexis folded his arms across his chest and stared directly at Mike.
