Bungie Composer Says Leaving Halo Was "Kind of a Relief"

The Halo soundtracks are fantastic. They feel surreal at times, which is exactly the kind of feel the game warranted (especially when it first came out).

Everything he made was pure musical gold anyways.

He'll stay with bungie, but if 343 DO make more halo games, it won't be halo without Marty.
They'll still use his theme, Microsoft owns it and like he said, "Halo has to sound like Halo."

He created one of my most favorite game songs ever

The man is a genius Bungie was so lucky to get him.

I hate "am I the only one?" questions too, but here goes:

Am I the only one who thought the Reach's soundtrack was, at times, rather annoying? I.e. horrible? Not at all the whole time, but every now and then there would be some percussion or something playing for a while and I'd realize "That doesn't sound very good. Actually, I'd rather not be hearing that."

The Halo franchise quite literally made Bungie into a monster.
Hohshit--Bungie is literally a monster! Kill it with fire!

But also, as a musician, I empathize. When you get locked into a project like that, it's like having to paint with only the same handful of colors for years, most of them different shades of blue. By the end, you're virtually* ready to stab yourself just to see some new colors.

Say what you will about Halo as a game franchise. You can't argue that it has some of the best music.

Combat Evolved was pretty good. I went through the Halo 3 OST after telling a friend Marty couldn't go a song without having some kind of chant in it.

I don't think I was wrong.

Well you can't really blame him. If I was stuck creating music for one particular franchise for almost a decade I would probably start getting tired of it myself, no matter how good it is.

The man is a musical genius regardless of the project he's working on.

Marty did amazing work in the Halo trilogy. He did manage to mix things up a bit with 2, and while 3 was mostly a modernized version of the original, he went all out with ODST just doing his thing. Reach...it has amazing stuff too, don't let ODST overshadow it. Maybe I just love the militaristic tone (see the "Lone Wolf" track), but if the Halo trilogy's music was meant to be epic, then Reach's soundtrack capped it all off. Which is fitting seeing how Reach is Bungie's goodbye to the Halo series. Can't wait to see-er, hear what he'll do with the future brand new projects!

ODST showed he's not just a one-trick pony. Reach's music was different than the trilogy's music but not as much compared to ODST. I think this new IP is a great thing for all of Bungie.

And Marty will hopefully keep up giving Bungie the best soundtracks in the business.

Work WITH Activision. Not for them.

I'm still wary about Activision, but Bungie is a fully independent developer partnered in a publishing deal with Activision. They can't do anything remotely like what they did with Infinity Ward.

I have to agree with you. I loved all of music he did for the Halo series but Halo 3: ODST did seem to have the best music. What I liked about the music in ODST was how it sounded somber but almost serene at the same time.

Good on him.

I couldn't think of anything worse than having to write the same music for ten years.

At least he was let loose a bit with ODST. That game, for all its flaws and mediocrity had some great atmosphere and variety.

Basically, all the tracks are many in one, also. The best part of Neon Night is 3 minutes in.

Yeah, I will always remember some of the best gaming music being from the Halo Series. Marty O' Donnell is certainly one of the greatest Video Game Composers out there. Glad to hear he'll get to work with something new for a change.
